Five different 3 mol.% yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystals/alumina (3Y-TZP/Al2O3) -glass specimens have been fabricated by the glass infiltration method. graphite additives were added to the (3Y-TZP/20Wt.%Al2O3) to obtain porous structure. The ATZ (Alumina Toughened Zirconia) skeleton have prepared by the normal compaction method. The specimen had been infiltrated by the glass (18Wt.% lithium hydroxide, 72 wt. % feldspar, and 10Wt.% nano Titanium oxide) at 1185ᵒC. Results showed that the porosity of (3Y-TZP/Al2O3) composite was increased while bulk density decreased with increasing graphite additives. The elastic modulus of (3Y-TZP/Al2O3)-glass was decreased (159-109GPa) with increasing the amount of glass infiltrated. Hardness was constant for all the specimens in value of (5.66 GPa), while increment of materials fracture toughening was due to the increasing the glass weight fraction, the kIc was lied between (0.53-1. 54MPa.m1/2). The glass infiltrated (3Y-TZP/Al2O3) process was successfully increased the fracture toughness by penetrated different amounts of glass into the (3Y-TZP/Al2O3) structure.

The fracture toughness is one of the requirements for mechanical properties of materials for use in satellites. The ceramic TZP zirconia (tetragonal zirconia polycrystals) have been investigated for applications in ballistic armor. Due to the chemical inertness and fracture toughness, this material has the potential to act as a screen against impacts of micrometeorites and space debris. The ceramic composites of alumina-zirconia 3Y-TZP (tetragonal zirconia polycrystals doped with 3 mol% ytria ) are the materials with the best benefit / cost for this application. This paper presents and discusses the results obtained from the use of two techniques for determining fracture toughness. The composite alumina - 18.5% of 3Y-TZP zirconia nanoparticles obtained from deflocculated powders have been tested for Vickers and the SEVNB penetration method (Single-Edge-Notch Beam V) to obtain the fracture toughness values (KIC). The KIC values obtained were analyzed due to the lower dispersion of experimental values. The SEVNB method showed better reliability in determining the toughness values in the studied ceramics.

Bone is similar to fiber-reinforced composite materials made up of distinct phases such as osteons (fiber), interstitial bone (matrix), and cement lines (matrix-fiber interface). Microstructural features including osteons and cement lines are considered to play an important role in determining the crack growth behavior in cortical bone. The aim of this study is to elucidate possible mechanisms that affect crack penetration into osteons or deflection into cement lines using fracture mechanics-based finite element modeling. Cohesive finite element simulations were performed on two-dimensional models of a single osteon surrounded by a cement line interface and interstitial bone to determine whether the crack propagated into osteons or deflected into cement lines. The simulations investigated the effect of (i) crack orientation with respect to the loading, (ii) fracture toughness and strength of the cement line, (iii) crack length, and (iv) elastic modulus and fracture properties of the osteon with respect to the interstitial bone. The results of the finite element simulations showed that low cement line strength facilitated crack deflection irrespective of the fracture toughness of the cement line. However, low cement line fracture toughness did not guarantee crack deflection if the cement line had high strength. Long cracks required lower cement line strength and fracture toughness to be deflected into cement lines compared with short cracks. The orientation of the crack affected the crack growth trajectory. Changing the fracture properties of the osteon influenced the crack propagation path whereas varying the elastic modulus of the osteon had almost no effect on crack trajectory. The findings of this study present a computational mechanics approach for evaluating microscale fracture mechanisms in bone and provide additional insight into the role of bone microstructure in controlling the microcrack growth trajectory.

A Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 nanocomposite was synthesized using Ti, Al, C and TiO2 as raw materials by a novel combination of high-energy milling and hot pressing. The reaction path of the 3Ti-8C-16Al-9TiO2 mixture of powders was investigated, and the results show that the transitional phases TiC, TixAly and Al2O3 are formed in high-energy milling first, and then TixAly is transformed to the TiAl phase during the hot pressing. Finally, a reaction between TiC and TiAl occurs to produce Ti3AlC2 and the nanosized Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 composite is synthesized. The Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 composite possessed a good combination of mechanical properties with a hardness of 6.0 GPa, a flexural strength of 600 MPa, and a fracture toughness (K1C) of 5.8 MPa?m1/2. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms were also discussed.

The CNT/B4C composite with Al2O3 additive was fabricated by hot-pressing following extrusion molding of a CNT/B4C paste, and mechanical properties of the obtained composite were investigated. Many CNTs in the composite aligned along the extrusion direction from SEM observation. 3-points bending strength of the composite was slightly lower than that of the monolithic B4C. Elastic modulus and Vickers hardness of the composite drastically decreased with CNT addition. Fracture toughness of the composite was higher than that of the monolithic B4C.

This work was intended to provide an understanding of the effect of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) on the mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The impact resistance and the tensile properties of low-density LDPE/MCC composites were investigated. The weight fraction of MCC was varied at (0, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt%). The obtained blends were then used to prepare the required tensile and impact testing samples by hot compression molding technique. It has been found that MCC has a strong influence on the mechanical properties of LDPE. At a low MCC weight fraction, there was a little improvement in the ultimate strength, fracture stress, and elongation at break, but at a high MCC weight fraction, the tensile properties were deteriorated and reduced significantly. The addition of 1 wt% MCC to LDPE enhanced the mentioned properties by 10, 25, and 6%, respectively. While at 30 wt% MCC, these properties were lowered by 36, 25, and 96%. The elastic modulus of LDPE composites was improved on all MCC weight fractions used in the study, at 20 wt% MCC, an increase in the elastic modulus by 12 folds was achieved. On the other hand and compared with the impact strength of pure LDPE, the addition of MCC particles enhanced the impact strength, the highest value obtained was for LDPE composites filled with 10 wt% MCC where the impact strength enhanced by two folds.

Dental ceramics made from Yttria stabilized tetragonal Zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) with feldspathic porcelain veneers have similar mechanical and aesthetic response to natural tooth. However, cases of early failure, such as chipping or fracture in the veneering have been reported after short periods of use. The present study evaluated the feldspathic porcelain (VITA-VM9) with addition of 0.5 and 2.5 wt% Alumina-Zirconia as reinforcing agents. Hardness, fracture toughness, contact resistance and color variations were evaluated finding better mechanical performance on the new formulations.
