The article discusses the contemporary issues of social responsibility in the higher education system which in recent years have been the subject of considerable debate at both national and supranational levels. The interpretation of a role of social responsibility as social and economic institute and as a factor of sustainable development of a particular organization as well as the economy and society overall provides a different perspective on the social responsibility phenomenon and its role in ensuring sustainability. The research hypothesis is the statement that building theoretical foundations of social responsibility in higher education institutions, constructing the respective conceptual framework and defining principles and factors of sustainable development should contribute to eliminate conceptual controversy and contradictions arising in the process of integrating the social responsibility paradigm in higher education. The study presents the evolution stages of a social responsibility concept which are the historical background; the concept genesis; the emergence of classical approaches; the evolution of a stakeholder approach; shaping of corporate social responsiveness, and the emergence of modern approaches to social responsibility in the frameworks of sustainable development. The evolution of the sustainable development concept has also been provided revealing its genesis, theoretical foundations and the taxonomy. Apart from the above, the findings have identified dominant approaches to interpret the notion of social responsibility, in particular, a systemic environmental approach, a cluster approach, macro- and microperspectives, a three-pronged (integrated) approach and organizational sustainability approach were described. It is argued that these approaches are embedded into social responsibility (conscientious economy, social economy, a shared value concept, conscious capitalism, positive economics, etc.) and their specifics should be considered while building a social responsibility framework in higher education institutions.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are influential social institutions which disseminate knowledge, promote innovation, and educate future decision-makers. The increasing awareness of HEIs as social actors has increased the pressure on them to accept and act upon their social responsibility. Processing this responsibility requires a structured management approach. The little attention given thus far to management performance and structured steering processes of social responsibility in HEIs marks the research gap the present study is focused on. This article provides a systematic review of scientific and academic publications, applying the concept of Social Performance after Wood (1991). The study aims to combine different research and modeling approaches to examine individual elements of social performance along the dimensions of processes of social responsiveness and outcomes of institutional behavior. With this approach, the study aims to answer the question of how HEIs assume their responsibilities as social institutions. The results show that observable outcomes of social behavior in the academic environment reflect a broad understanding of different approaches. By clustering the encoded literature into processes and outcomes, the study structures the fragmented body of research reflecting the various characteristics of the higher education sector.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES. Social responsibility is a system of innovative working relationships that acts as an essential technology that enhances the effectiveness of a higher education institution with employees, partners, customers and the community, and ultimately contributes to its prosperity and civil society. Social responsibility should focus on enhancing the image of the higher education institution, recognising its successes in society by civil institutions and individual citizens. This will increase the social value of the higher education institution, its competitiveness, sustainability and efficiency, allowing society to use the resource voluntarily provided by the higher education institution to balance organisational and social interests.METHODS. The methods used to conduct the research were: interview, expert. The questions selected for this study were taken either from the literature or from individual interviews. The literature helped to identify important dimensions of the concept of social responsibility. The interviews helped to identify new points and possible dimensions to contextualise organisational approaches to shaping the social responsibility of higher education institutions.FINDINGS. Organizational approaches to the formation of social responsibility of higher education institutions in the market of educational services are proposed. Mechanisms to increase socio-commercial value of socially responsible higher education institutions are argued: creation of public institutions to identify, formulate public interests and present them to corporations; selection of social projects taking into account stakeholder expectations.CONCLUSION. In order to increase the efficiency of using the principles of social responsibility in HEIs, to improve their ratings, students' competitiveness in the labour market and their involvement in the task-setting and decision-making process, it is necessary to develop a programme of corporate social activity, which can become the basis for developing the HEIs' development strategy. The formation and adoption of such a strategy should be based on the interests of all stakeholders, based on the core values of the university to achieve the indicators at micro-, meso- and macrolevels.

Abstract Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) addresses sustainable development issues, in the economic, environmental, and social dimensions. The positive role of higher education institutions (HEIs), such as Universities and Polytechnic Institutes, in educating decision makers and leaders, and therefore contributing to progress and the public good, has been widely acknowledged. This investigation aims to map the BSc and MSc courses offered by Portuguese HEIs that address Sustainability (or Social Responsibility, or Ethics) in their curricula with the aim of proving their graduates with the right knowledge and competencies to overcome the Sustainable Development challenges. A systematic review utilizing a structured approach was used to analyze Portuguese HEIs BSc and MSc courses and the content analysis of their curricular units. The conclusions show that Sustainability (or Social Responsibility, or Ethics) is covered in most Social Sciences, Engineering, and Management, BSc and MSc courses, offered by the top 8 Portuguese Higher Education Institutions. However, ESD is fragmented by different approaches, issues, methodologies, and implications, lacking a consistent body of knowledge. Some courses focus more on the Social dimension, while others are more directed to the Environment or the Economic one. Sometimes the chosen approach is more normative (do what is right to do; the ethical way) and in other cases is more instrumental (do what is good for the business; the business case). Social Sciences, Engineering and Science, and Management and Economics are the three top clusters that address Sustainability related syllabus in their curricula, with 49 hours teaching hours in average for the curricular units covering Sustainability (with considerable variation). Universities have more curricular units addressing the topic while Polytechnic Institutes show a higher number of hours per curricular unit and most are of compulsory nature (while in Universities more than 50% of the curricular units are of optional nature). As the collected information was in some cases of generic nature, additional research should be used to confirm and detail these results and evaluate the effectiveness of this education to empower students to act as change agents for Sustainable Development. Benchmarking with other countries (e.g., from the European Union) is also an interesting avenue to pursue this investigation.

There has been considerable progress in the incorporation of sustainable development (SD) into higher education institutions’ curricula. This has included research on competences for SD and pedagogical approaches used; however, there has been limited research on the connection between how pedagogical approaches are used and how they may develop sustainability competences. A survey was developed, based on the ‘connecting sustainable development pedagogical approaches to competences’ framework, to investigate sustainability being taught, sustainability competences developed, and pedagogical approaches used in European higher education institutions. The survey was sent to a database of more than 4000 contacts from which 390 complete responses (9.80%) were obtained. The results show that the social dimension was the least addressed at 18% of responses, while the economic, environmental, and cross-cutting dimensions were addressed almost equally. The correlation analyses showed a relation between the contribution to sustainability and the strength of competences, and between the strength of competences and the strength of pedagogical approaches. The results from the survey helped to update the theoretical framework, which provides a more precise perspective on how sustainability competences can be better developed in class, and how to better develop all the sustainability competences.

PurposeThis paper aims to explain the extent of social responsibility disclosure by Brazilian philanthropic higher education institutions (PHEIs). This paper assumes that there is information asymmetry between these organizations and their stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachThe presence of indicators on the organizations’ webpage generated a disclosure index for each PHEI of the sample. Afterwards, this paper performed regression tests, which identified the determinants of PHEIs social responsibility disclosure extent.FindingsThe results support the legitimacy theory as a theoretical basis for social responsibility disclosure extent. The evidenced indicators and the non-rejected hypotheses, related to complexity, diversification, regional factor, specific event and quality, confirm the concern with transparency and accountability of commitments assumed by the social contract.Research limitations/implicationsThis research is limited to social responsibility disclosure related to the legitimacy theory and the interests of some stakeholders and to Brazilian PHEIs and their webpages. These limitations mean opportunities for future research studies addressing different information disclosure, foundations of other theories, interests of each specific stakeholder or other stakeholders in other communication channels and other countries, which enable comparisons of results.Practical implicationsThe disclosure of extent determinants serve as the basis for the establishment of disclosure and accountability policies for PHEIs.Originality/valueThe originality of this research consists of analyzing the determinants of disclosure from the information of the stakeholders’ interest. They are able to legitimize organizations, allowing them to remain in the community where they operate.

The paper is focused on the analysis of the formation of corporate social responsibility (SCR) development in the higher educational institution. Peculiarities of the formation of corporate social model and its essence are investigated in this paper. The social responsibility and its role in the development of the educational institution culture are determined. It is proved that in practice the mechanism of forming corporate social responsibility in higher educational institutions is extremely important. The factors and analyses that summarize the awareness of corporate social responsibility importance, in compliance with the high demand for education, especially in the content of relations with employees, consumers and respect for the environment are described. Effective activities of higher education institutions are highlighted. The consequences of corporate social responsibility introduction into the work of management bodies and subordinate employees of the Academy, as well as in higher educational institutions of Ukraine in general, are investigated. The market of educational services should ensure that the graduates acquire sufficient level of professional qualification; therefore, managers of educational institutions are responsible for the provided educational services, thus they build the foundation for the formation of corporate social responsibility both in their own and the students’ work. Moreover, the higher educational institution forms its good reputation, increases competitiveness in the market of educational services. Conditional levels into which corporate and social responsibility is divided are described in this paper, and here it is determined which levels correspond to DonNACEA’s and LuhNAU’s SCR, what is the life position of educational institutions, what should be paid attention to in order to reach sustainable development. Prospects for the introduction of socially responsible behavior in corporate policy and strategies for sustainable development of higher education institutions are identified. The problems of modification of the corporate social responsibility concept in the context of educational social responsibility are considered in this paper. The main resources of corporate social responsibility of educational institutions and its key factors are described, the directions and types of activities are defined.

University Social Responsibility is a complex phenomenon where different processes that are developed in the Higher Education Institutions converge. The universities must accomplish the mission that was entrusted to them and they must guide their functions to social transformation. Although the concept has evolved allowing Higher Education Institutions to adapt it to the context and their needs, it is still necessary to have a common framework to guide their actions, specifically regarding the social responsibility, that allow them to train responsible professionals, not only with their actions, but also for the impacts generated in a social and environmental level. This study uses a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method and its aim is to identify the methodological orientations to train students in Social Responsibility based on the experiences collected from socially responsible projects in 13 mexican and latin american universities. The main results present six emergent categories to train in SR: a) communitary empathy, b) citizen participation, c) linking with organizations, d) teaching accompaniment, e) social dialog and f) knowledge application, from which a methodological proposal is presented.
