Evaluation of Learning Cycle 4E-RE to Improve Chemistry Learning of Vocational High School Students

This study aimed to examine the effect of the Learning Cycle 4E-RE on the vocational school students’ chemistry learning outcomes in light vehicle engine maintenance subject. The research subjects were 164 Vocational High School (SMK) students majoring in Technology and Engineering, the Automotive Engineering expertise program, consisting of 100 students in the experimental group and 64 students in the control group. The research instrument was a learning outcome test with 30 multiple-choice items with reliability of Kuder-Richardson ρ (KR 20) = 0.837. This study used a quasi-experimental pre / posttest control group design. The mean similarity of the experimental class and the control class was tested from the pretest results using t-test statistical analysis. The research hypothesis was tested using the ANCOVA test with a significance level of 5% (0.05). The results showed that there were differences in the learning outcomes of students who were taught with the Learning Cycle 4E-RE strategy with students who were taught with verification/conventional teaching. Student learning outcomes in the experimental class were higher than those in the control class. The implication of this research is that contextual learning strategies such as the Learning Cycle 4E-RE are suitable for vocational students to improve their learning outcomes. For further research, reflection activities in a learning strategy need to be tested again using different learning strategies and chemistry topics.

This study aimed to examine the difference of Vocational High School students’ learning motivation after they were taught the topic of the electrolyte solution and redox reaction using POGIL model with SSI context, POGIL, and conventional learning. The research design used was quasi-experiment with the model of pre-test and post-test control group design. The research subjects were three classes with the similar initial ability. The data were obtained using SMTSL motivation questionnaire (r = 0.824) and analyzed using ANCOVA. The research results showed a significant difference in learning motivation between students taught using POGIL with SSI context, POGIL, and conventional learning. The students who were taught using POGIL with SSI context had the highest learning motivation compared to those taught using POGIL and conventional learning.

Abstrak. Paradigma baru pempelajaran menyediakan peluang para siswa dengan aktif terlibat  dalam proses pempelajaran dan strategi pembelajaran yang sesuai dapat meningkatkan aktivitas dan  bersama-sama meningkatkan pemahaman. Penggunaan struktur tertentu dirancang untuk mempengaruhi pola interaksi siswa. Satu strategi adalah kooperatif struktur think-pair-share, menetapkan prosedur untuk memberi para siswa lebih waktu untuk berpikir, menjawab, dan saling membantu. Penelitian dirancang untuk mengintegrasikan strategi pembelajaran (struktur think-pair-share dan ekspositori) dengan pemberian advance organizer untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar fisika siswa kelas X. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menentukan pengaruh utama dan interaksi strategi pembelajaran dan advance organizer terhadap hasil belajar fisika siswa kelas X. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan eksperimen semu dan pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group dengan faktorial 2 x 2. Subjek penelitian adalah para siswa SMA 7 Mataram NTB kelas X tahun pelajaran 2010/2011. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada interaksi antara strategi pembelajaran dan advance organizer terhadap hasil belajar fisika siswa kelas X. Kata Kunci: think-pair-share, ekspositori, advance organizer, hasil belajar Abstract. The new paradigm of learning provide opportunities to students actively involved in the process of learning and appropriate learning strategies can enhance the activity and mutual help increase understanding. The use of a particular structure is designed to influence the pattern of student interaction. One strategy is to structure cooperative learning think-pair-share, has established procedures to explicitly give students more time to think, respond, and help each other. The study was designed to integrate learning strategies (cooperative structure of the think-pair-share and expository) by providing advance organizers to improve student learning outcomes physics class X. The purpose of this study was to determine the main effect and interaction of learning strategies and the provision of advance organizers to learning outcomes physics class X. This research uses quasi-experimental design of pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design with a factorial 2 x 2. Research subjects were high school students 7 Mataram West Nusa Tenggara Province in class X semester 2010/2011 school year. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the use of video media in improving student learning outcomes in the competence of caring for the scalp and hair. The research method used was an experimental method with pretest and posttest control group design. This study used test as a research data collection instrument. The validity test of the test questions was analyzed by using product moment correlation and the reliability testi was analyzed by using the Kuder-Richardson-20 formula (KR-20). The contents validity of video instrument and the performance of students were analyzed by using the Contents Validity Ratio (CVR) formula, meanwhile, the reliability test was analyzed by using Cohens Kappa. The study population was a class of X beauty students at State Vocational High School 3 Pati. The placement of the students into the experiment group and the control group used a random assigment technique by drawing. Based on the results of the t-test, the initial average of learning outcomes in the competency of caring the scalp and hair of the control group is 54.5704, it improves into 75.0593 with the improves of 37.54%, including in the “low” category. Whereas, in the experiment group, the initial average learning outcomes in the competency of caring for the scalp and hair is 55.9438, it increases to 83.3281, with the improves of 48.95%, including in the “medium” category. The difference in the improvement in learning outcomes in the experiment group is higher than the difference in the improvement in learning outcomes of the control group (48.95% > 37.54%) so that it can be synthesized that the use of video media is effective in learning competency in caring for the scalp and hair in class of X beauty students of State Vocational High School 3 Pati.

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether or not there is a significant effect of silent short movie on EFL writing achievement of the vocational high school students. This study was quasi-experimental using a nonrandomized control group, pretest-posttest design. There were 61 students who were selected randomly from the 10 classes of tenth-graders of the 6th State Vocational School in Samarinda. The instruments used in the study was writing test. The result revealed that the vocational high school tenth grade students who were taught by silent short movie (M = 8.01, SD = .32) got significantly different achievement in EFL writing than did the vocational high school tenth grade students who were not taught by silent short, t(58) = -2.22, p = .030. This result suggests that the writing aspects which the students significantly outperformed were text organization, sentence formation, grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, and tidiness.

The purpose of this research is to improve physical fitness which is one of the goals of physical education in Indonesia while also improving the nutritional status of Surabaya vocational high school students. This research uses the treatment of physical activity 3 times a week in 2 months as a task in physical education to improve physical fitness and nutrional status on the sample of this research. Research design uses quasi experimental design with metode non-randomized control group pretest-posttest design. Research data was obtained as follows: data processing result on experiment group show that physical activity to VO2max got significant score based calculating using SPSS of 0,00 and physical activity to nutrional status got sig. of 0,60. Whereas in the control group, physical actifity got sig. of 0.20 to VO2max and sig. to 0.11 on nutrional status. Based on the above analysis it can be concluded that physical activity has a significant effect on physical fitness but physical activity has no significant effect on nutrional status to Surabaya vocational high school students.

Biology learning is highly recommended to be presented contextually following daily experience and phenomena. This study, a quasi-experimental research using a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design, aimed to understand the effect of project-based collaborative learning towards the concept mastery of mushrooms. The subjects of the study were 75 tenth grade of high school students in Surakarta City, Indonesia, divided into two classes: 38 students in the experimental class 37 in the control class. In the experimental class, the students were treated with project-based collaborative learning strategies. In project-based collaborative learning strategy, students were challenged to create a project on oyster mushroom cultivation (Pleurotus ostreatus) With the media garden waste such as sawdust. In the control class, the students were treated with direct instruction. The instrument used was a multiple-choice test and essay developed by researchers to measure students' concept mastery towards mushrooms. Research data were analyzed by independent sample t-test. The results found that the average n-gain score for the experimental and the control classes were 63.09% and 45.73%, respectively. Moreover, all indicators of mushroom concept mastery showed the n-gain scores for the experimental class higher than the control class. Analysis of independent sample t-test proved that the significant differences existed between direct instruction and project-based collaborative learning in improving the concept mastery of mushroom. Finally, This research concluded that project-based collaborative learning is more effective in enriching the concept mastery than direct instruction.

The main problem in education today is the lack of effectiveness in the learning process. This can be seen from the average student learning outcomes which are always still low. Especially for vocational high school students who emphasize learning skills in order to produce work-ready graduates, but it is inversely proportional to the facts in the field. Low learning outcomes are indicated because the learning conditions are still conventional (lectures, practicum, and discussions) where teachers are still a source of learning (teacher centered). This study aims to determine the effect of the project based blended learning model on learning outcomes of vocational high school students. This research was conducted through a literature review and relevant research results and was continued through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). From the research it was found that there was a significant positive influence between the variable model of project based blended learning and student learning outcomes, which means that student learning outcomes can be improved through the application of a project based blended learning model.

This study aims to explore vocational high school students’ attitudes toward integrating blended learning into situational writing, and the learning effectiveness of that integration. A total of 84 vocational high students were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received writing instruction through an online platform, whereas the control group received writing instruction in traditional classrooms. Attitude toward writing and writing performance were assessed before and after the experiment. Also, learning satisfaction survey was conducted afterwards. The findings of this study reveal that results of the post-test total scores and behavior are significantly higher than the pre-test total scores and behavior results for both the experimental and control groups. Particularly, organization, language usage, and the overall performance in the students’ writings are significantly improved. Scores for affection and behavior and total scores for attitude toward writing are significantly higher for the experimental group than for the control group. Both groups show significant satisfaction with the instructional method, interactivity, and total grades.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan mendeksripsikan nilai- nilai karakter dalam pembelajaran keterampilan berbicara. Subjek penelitian adalah 23 siswa kelas X A-3 SMKN 1 Bulango Utara, Kabupaten Gorontalo. Data yang diperoleh berupa hasil observasi proses pembelajaran, hasil wawancara, dan deskripsi hasil studi dokumen. Selanjutnya, data yang terkumpul dianalisis dengan model interaktif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses pembelajaran keterampilan berbicara bahasa Indonesia di SMK Negeri 1 Bulango Utara belum sepenuhnya mengandung nilai-nilai berkarakter. Nilai-nilai karakter yang selalu muncul adalah jujur, bertanggung jawab, percaya diri, ingin tahu atau cinta ilmu, dan menghargai orang lain. Sementara itu, nilai-nilai karakter yang intensitas kemunculannya kurang dalam setiap pembelajaran adalah bernalar (berpikir logis, kritis, kreatif, dan inovatif), santun, dan disiplin. Hasil pembelajaran mencakup hal-hal berikut: (a) objektivitas pembicaraan, (b) kualitas isi pembicaraan, (c) sasaran atau arah pembicaraan, dan (d) gaya berbicara.Kata kunci: keterampilan berbicara, nilai karakter, bahasa Indonesia, siswa SMKMORAL VALUES IN THE LEARNING OF INDONESIAN SPEAKING SKILLSAMONG VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AbstractThis study aims to describe moral values in the learning of speaking skills. The research subjects were 23 students of Grade X A-3 SMKN 1 Bulango Utara, Gorontalo Regency. The data were the results of observations on the learning process, interviews, and description of the document study. The data were analyzed by the interactive model. The results show that the learning process of Indonesian speaking skills at SMK Negeri 1 Bulango Utara has not fully emphasized moral values. The values that always come up are honesty, responsibity, confidence, curiousity or love of science, and respect for others. Meanwhile, the values that rarely appear in learning are reasoning (logical, critical, creative, and innovative thinking), politeness, and discipline. The learning outcomes include: (a) the conversation objectivity, (b) the quality of the conversation content, (c) the goal or the direction of the conversation, and (d) the speaking style.Keywords: speaking skills, moral values, Indonesian, vocational high school students
