O Brasil é um país bastante rico em biodiversidade e com isso as comunidades tradicionais e agricultores fazem o cultivo dessa ampla diversidade de espécies e de variedades vegetais. Este fator agrega grande relevância aos estudos etnobotânicos, onde busca-se resgatar o conhecimento sobre as plantas nas comunidades rurais, visando manter a interrelação entre a utilização de plantas medicinais e o conhecimento das pessoas. O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar o perfil socioeconômico e a percepção das pessoas sobre o conhecimento botânico do uso e apropriação das plantas medicinais utilizadas na comunidade rural de Santa Marta, Município de Corrente, Estado do Piauí. A pesquisa foi realizada no período de julho de 2018 a março de 2019, na Comunidade Rural de Santa Marta, sendo ela destinada às pessoas com idade igual ou superior a 40 anos, em virtude de possuírem mais conhecimento sobre o uso de plantas medicinais. Para isso, foi realizada uma caminhada transversal com alguns moradores e a aplicação de um questionário semiestruturado de caráter quali-quantitavo. Foi registrado um total de 90 espécies de plantas medicinais utilizadas pelos moradores da Comunidade Rural de Santa Marta. Após identificar as espécies juntamente com os moradores e ainda com a realização de levantamentos bibliográficos, verificou-se que muitas destas espécies são típicas do Cerrado, mas existem a ocorrência de algumas predominantes da Caatinga e Mata Atlântica. As espécies mais usadas pelos entrevistados são a erva-doce Pimpinella anisum L. e o hortelã Mentha crispa L., mencionadas por cerca de 36,36% dos entrevistados, a melancia-da-praia Solanum agrarium Sendtn. (27,27%), a erva-cidreira Lippia alba Mill. N.E.Br. (18,18%), seguido do alecrim Rosmarinus officinalis L., do gengibre Zingiber officinale Roscoe, da imburana Amburana cearensis A.C. Smith e do limão Citrus limon L. Burm. (13,64%) e do pequi Caryocar coriaceum Wittm (4,54%). Dentre as espécies identificadas muitas delas são utilizadas para o tratamento de enfermidades que acometem a vida das pessoas como, diarreia, hipertensão, infecção no sistema urinário, colesterol, entre outros. Quanto à parte vegetal utilizada nas preparações dos remédios caseiros, observou-se uma frequência maior de uso das folhas, seguido de caule e fruta, raízes, flores e óleo. Por meio das informações obtidas foi possível realizar o levantamento etnobotânico das plantas medicinais utilizadas na Comunidade Rural de Santa Marta e, além disso, do uso e do conhecimento que as pessoas possuem. Ao construir essa relação entre comunidade e o conhecimento sobre uso das plantas medicinais, torna-se de grande valia para a vida das pessoas, propiciando a contribuição para a conservação da cultura regional, contribuindo assim na sua valorização.

Background: Appreciable number of medicinal plants are used for the treatment of diabetes in Nigeria. Aim of the Study: The present study aimed to investigate the antidiabetic activity of Zingiber officinale extracts and its potential mechanisms in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Study Duration: The period of the study was done on 30th September, 2018 at the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, university of Jos, Nigeria. Methodology: Albino rats of Wistar strain weighing between 130 g to 160 g were induced with single freshly prepared streptozotocin (55 mg/kg body weight). Diabetes was confirmed after forty eight hours in streptozotocin -induced rats showing fasting blood glucose levels > 10 mmol/l. The rats were randomly divided into four (4) experimental groups (n = 4). A (Control diabetic group fed with normal feed), Group B (Normal control fed with normal feed), Group Group C (Diabetic rats treated with 400 mg/Kg body weight extract of ginger and Group D, (Diabetic rats are treated with 400 mg/Kg body weight of metformin). After 8 days the animals were sacrificed and blood samples were collected for biochemical and hematological analysis. Changes in the animal body weights were also measured within the period. Results: From the results, it was observed that treatment of rats with extract of ginger compensates for the reduction of body weight, and caused an increase in the body weight of the treated rats (+11.5%) in contrast to 24.8% reduction observed in diabetic control. In the same order, serum glucose significantly decreased (p<0.05) after the 8-day treatment compared to diabetic control. The extent of reversal of hyperglycemia in the ginger extract treated animals compared well with the metformin treated group. The results, therefore, showed that ginger extract has a significant (p<0.05) hypoglycemic effect in diabetic rats and moreover, elevations in the measured biochemical parameters were significantly (p<0.05) attenuated in rats treated with ginger extract. Conclusion: Zingiber officinale extracts has a significant effect on some biochemical parameters and hematological assays. These provide scientific evidence to confirm the traditional use of Z. officinale in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

The aim of this study was to exhibit cardiovascular effects of aqueous extract of Zingiber officinale rhizome sold in Ouagadougou markets (Burkina Faso). Phytochemical constituents and some blood biochemical parameters were also investigated. Colorimetric method was used for phytochemical screening. Extract was prepared and orally administered on Wistar rats. Arterial pressure and cardiac rhythm were measured using Ugo Basile Blood Pressure Recorder 58500. Biochemical parameters were performed using Mindray BA-88A, Semi-auto Chemistry Analyzer. Triterpenes and/or sterols, and saponosides were present in aqueous extract of the plant. We also found very significative hypotension effect on rat mean arterial pressure, when plant extract was administered at 400 mg/kg bw (p ˂ 0.01). When extract was administered after a hypertension induced by L-NAME, we observed a high significative antihypertensive effect (p ˂ 0.001) at 200 and 400 mg/kg bw. This effect was comparable to captopril inhibition of L-NAME induced hypertension. However, in all cases, we did not observe any significative variation of heart rate. For biochemical parameters, we did not find any effect, excepted a significant increase of phosphoremia at 400 mg/kg bw and after L-NAME administration (highly significant). Our results confirm literature data and corroborate traditional uses of Z. officinale sold in Ouagadougou markets. They suggest that antihypertensive effect of AEZO is mainly supported by vascular physiology components.

n this study, the effect of Pimpinella anisum oil (Anise oil) extract is evaluated on some biochemical parameters in PCOS mice as a model for human PCOS. Estrous cyclicity of 24 adult cycling mice was monitored by vaginal smears. After about 4 days, 18 mice received an intramuscular (I.M.) injection of a single dose of estradiol valerate (EV), one mg in 0.1 ml of corn oil to induce (PCOS), corn oil was injected to the six mice in the control group. After 60 days from injection, mice with (PCOS) were orally administered multiple doses (200, 400) mg/kg Body weight of anise oil extract for 15 days. The histological (ovary) and hormonal (FSH, LH, estradiol and progesterone) results showed that anise oil can decrease signs of PCOS in the ovarian tissue and altered concentrations of luteinizing hormone.
