Involvement of parents in rehabilitation process is of vital importance. Parental perception and satisfaction from the available support and services are the indicators of their (un)met specific needs. The objectives of the study were to assess the parental perception about the level of available support from different personnel involved in the process of aural rehabilitation and to highlight the parental needs and recommendations for aural rehabilitation of children with hearing impairment (HIC). A survey was conducted from October 2014 to January 2015 to collect demographic data, information about level of support of different personnel as received by the parents, their opinion and recommendation about further required support. The sample comprised of 30 government special education institutes from which 308 questionnaires, filled by the parents of the HIC studying in these institutions were received back. The results highlighted the poor educational and income level of the parents, increasing incidence of hearing impairment in the families of HIC, lack of available support from personnel involved in aural rehabilitation and documented parental demands and recommendations. It was concluded that future planning of provisions for aural rehabilitation may be more effective, if aligned with the requirements and preferences expressed by parents of HIC.

Parents' involvement in the rehabilitation process is very important. Parental views about the availability of related services and incentives are the significant indicators of their required particular needs. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the level of available related services and incentives in special education centers and to highlight their specific and suggestions for improvement of these services for students of four disabilities studying in these centers. A survey was conducted from 2019 to 2020 to collect data about demographic characteristics and information about related services and incentives provided to these special students from their parents and also their suggestions to improve these services. The sample consisted of 36 government special education centers at the Tehsil level, from which 479 questionnaires, filled by the parents of students, were received back. The results emphasized the low education and income of the parents, increasing incidence of disability in the families of special children, lack of available services and incentives in these centers, and acknowledged parental suggestions and recommendations. It was concluded from the survey that future planning of provisions of related services and incentives might be more helpful and effective if based on the requirements and preferences conveyed by parents of special students with four disabilities.

In Latin America, pulse consumption ranges from 1 kg/capita per year (Argentina) to 25 kg/capita per year (Nicaragua). Common beans account for 87% of the total. The differences between countries, regions or groups of population within the same country can be explained by the following factors: (1) beans are very nutritious; (2) beans and maize are traditional foods and the habit of consuming them is deeply rooted in many people and communities; (3) the rural population eats more pulses than the urban population, due to geographical constraints that limit exchanges and favour consumption of locally produced foods; (4) income level, beans are still the poor man's meat; and (5) other factors, such as consumers' taste, the constraints on cooking beans, etc. The evolution of the consumption level in the future will depend on the urbanization of the population, access to processed foods and income level. Health issues would be an argument for maintaining or increasing the current consumption level.

Researchers have suggested that educational programming for students with low incidence disabilities in rural settings may be limited. In the current study, researchers surveyed special education teachers across Kentucky and collected demographic data on two exemplar districts. Results indicated that differences existed between urban and rural districts on several variables but that some rural communities in Kentucky were able to overcome barriers to the provision of educational programming for students with low incidence disabilities prevalent in other parts of rural America.

Objective To analyze the prevalence of pediatric allergic airway disease (PAA) and recognize its impact on cognitive function, childhood activities, use of early intervention, and missed school days. Study Design Cross-sectional analysis of National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 2014 to 2017. Setting US households. Subjects and Methods An NHIS survey of US children and responding caregivers was analyzed to determine the prevalence of PAA, including allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. Associations were determined between the presence of PAA and activities limited by difficulty remembering, limitation in the amount of childhood play, use of special education/early intervention, and number of missed school days in the past 12 months. Multivariate analysis was used to adjust for age, sex, race, ethnicity, and income level. Results An estimated 11.1 million (10.6-11.6 million, 95% confidence interval) children (mean age, 9.9 years; 56.9% male) reported a diagnosis of PAA (15.1% [14.6-15.6%]). Children with PAA missed 4.0 (3.7-4.4) school days per year vs 2.2 (2.1-2.4) days for those without PAA ( P < .001, adjusted). PAA was associated with limited daily activities due to difficulty with memory (odds ratio, 1.8 [1.2-2.9]), limitations in childhood play (3.2 [2.2-4.7]), and need for special education/early intervention services (1.6 [1.4-1.8]) after adjusting for age, sex, race, ethnicity, and income level. Conclusion PAA is a common condition and is associated with declines in cognitive function and school attendance as well as increased use of special education/early intervention. Given the significant prevalence and burden of illness of PAA, further attention is needed to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.

The metabolic response to critical illness is complex and affects every body system. The first phase of this response is characterized by increased hypothalamic pituitary activity and resistance (decreased response) to effector hormones in many target tissues. Cytokines released in the early stages of such illness may be important as they appear to stimulate the hypothalamic pituitary axis directly as part of this ‘stress response’. This phase is considered ‘adaptive’ (helpful), increasing the availability of glucose, free fatty acids, and amino acids as substrates for vital organs. However, in prolonged illness, the neuroendocrine response is very different with damped hypothalamic responses, leading to a state in which catabolism predominates, leading to what might be termed the critical illness wasting syndrome. The gastrointestinal (GI) failure often associated with prolonged critical illness appears to be due, at least in part, to an altered neuroendocrine environment. The poor nutritional state associated with GI failure exacerbates the catabolic response, prolonging illness and the period of intensive care management required by the patient. The result is increased mortality and, in survivors, a more prolonged recovery/rehabilitation process.

The aim of this study was to explore the association between employment status and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule, Second Edition (WHODAS 2.0) scores of working-age subjects with hearing impairment. The data of 18,573 working-age subjects (age ≥ 18 and <65 years) with disabling hearing impairment were obtained from the Taiwan Data Bank of Persons with Disability (TDPD) for the period from 11 July 2012 to 31 October 2018. Demographic data and WHODAS 2.0 scores for each domain were analyzed to identify their relationship with employment status. Unemployed subjects with disabling hearing impairment had higher WHODAS 2.0 scores in all domains compared with the employed subjects. Binary logistic regression revealed that older age, female sex, lower educational level, institutional residence, rural residence, lower family income, and moderate to severe impairment were more strongly associated with unemployment status. The data in this large population-based study offer comprehensive information on important factors associated with the employment status of people with disabling hearing impairment. Early identification of risks of unemployment of patients with hearing impairment can raise awareness for aggressive community and government campaigns regarding public health to improve the self-confidence, social participation, and related psycho-social wellbeing of people.

<p>This research is regarding the readiness of typical student in communication by using sign language in Hearing Impairment Integration Programme. There were 60 typical students from a Special Education Integration Programme of secondary school in Malacca were chosen as research respondents. The instrument of the research was a set of questionnaire which consisted of four parts, namely Student’s demography (Part A), Student’s knowledge (Part B), Student’s ability to communicate (Part C) and Student’s interest to communicate (Part D). The questionnaire was adapted from the research of Asnul Dahar and Rabiah's 'The Readiness of Students in Following Vocational Subjects at Jerantut District, Rural Secondary School in Pahang'.  Descriptive analysis was used to analysis the data. Mean score was used to determine the level of respondents' perception of each question. The findings showed a positive relationship between typical students towards communication medium by using sign language. Typical students were seen to be interested in communicating using sign language and were willing to attend the Sign Language class if offered.</p>
