Tests were performed on Marshall samples and were implemented for permanent deformation and resilient modulus (Mr) under indirect tensile repeated loading (ITRL), with constant stress level. Two types of liquid asphalt (cutback and emulsion) were tried as recycling agents, aged materials that were reclaimed from field (100% RAP), samples were prepared from the aged mixture, and two types of liquid asphalt (cutback and emulsion) with a weight content of 0.5% were utilized to prepare a recycled mixture. A group of twelve samples was prepared for each mixture; six samples were tested directly for ITRL test (three samples at 25˚C and three samples at 40˚C), an average value for ITRL for every three samples was calculated (ITRL for unconditioned samples). The other six samples were placed in volumetric flask 4000-ml heavy- wall glass filled with water at 25˚C under a vacuum pressure of (3.74 kPa) for 5 to 10 minutes. Then the samples were put in deep freeze for 16 hours at -18˚C. The samples were frozen then were transported to a water bath at 60ºC for 24 hours. Then they were soaked in a water bath for 1 hour at 25ºC and tested for the ITRL test (three samples at 25˚C and three samples at 40˚C), the average value of ITRL for every three samples was calculated (ITRL for conditioned samples). It was concluded that the reduction in (Mr) at the Conditioned test as compared to the Unconditioned test was (29.5%, 22.27% and 9.09%) at 25˚C, while at 40˚C, the reduction was (21.28%, 15.53%, and 17.89%) for aged and recycled mixtures with (cutback), and (emulsion) respectively. The change in permanent deformation at the Conditioned test as compared to Unconditioned one was (76.19%, 75.61% and 53.22%) at 25˚C, while at 40˚C it was (56.48%, 35.19%, and 78.33%) for aged and recycled mixtures with (cutback), and (emulsion) respectively.

The use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates as replacement for new materials in the pavement base weakens the layer in regards to the resistance to permanent deformation under repeated loading. A mechanistic based design procedure is proposed to ensure that base layers containing RAP particles have a similar rutting behaviour to base layers made of virgin aggregates. The design procedure allows calculating an asphalt concrete thickness increase that is based on permanent deformation behaviour of base materials. The calculation approach is based on multistage triaxial permanent deformation tests performed on granular material samples with varied RAP content. The tests allowed proposing an equation that relates permanent strain rate, RAP content, and deviatoric stress, which is the basis of the design procedure. Design charts are proposed to select adequate thickness increase for the asphalt concrete layer according to the expected RAP content in the base layer and asphalt concrete modulus.

Tests were performed on asphalt concrete specimens with (101.6 mm in diameter and 101.6 mm in height), and the results were implemented for calculating permanent deformation and resilient modulus under repeated compressive stress with different levels of stresses (0.068, 0.138 and 0.206) MPa at 40 ºC. Two types of additives namely (carbon black-asphalt) and (SBR-asphalt) were tried as rejuvenators with three percentages of (0.5, 1 and 1.5) % by weight of asphalt cement along with two ratios of AC (1 and 2) % have been implemented as rejuvenator and blended with the reclaimed asphalt concrete. Aged materials were obtained from the site. 100% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement material from the reclaimed mixture is implemented. A set of (3) specimens were prepared for every mixture; three specimens were tested under (repeated compressive stress) at each level of stress. The objective of this work was to study the effect of two types of additives (Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber (SBR) and carbon black) on the performance of recycled asphalt concrete mixture. It was concluded that the Resilient modulus (Mr) at (0.138 and 0.206) MPa stress level decreases by (14, 22 and 8) % and (22, 34 and 11) for reclaimed and recycle mixtures with (carbon black-asphalt and SBR-asphalt) respectively when compared with that at 0.068 MPa. Permanent deformation for recycled mixtures with (carbon black-asphalt and SBR-asphalt) increased by (65.9, 4.54) %, (146.6, 27.2) % and (79, 5.5) % at level of stresses (0.068, 0.138 and 0.206) MPa respectively when compared to reclaimed mixture.

Utilizing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in new asphalt mixtures has increased in recent years because of its economic and environmental benefits. The flexibility of the recycled asphalt concrete (with cutback and emulsion) in terms of resilient modulus (Mr), rutting resistance, and permanent microstrain have been investigated in this work. Cylindrical specimens of 102 mm in diameter and 102 mm in height have been prepared from the recycled mixture after the short-term aging process. Specimens were subjected to 1200 repeated compressive stresses at (25) ºC. The vertical permanent microstrain was monitored through video capture. It was concluded that RAP mixture can hold the applied loading with minimal permanent deformation as compared to the recycled mixtures. The resilient modulus is lower by (24 and 39) % for mixes recycled with cutback and emulsion respectively as compared to that of RAP. The rate of strain (slope) increases by 11 % and 4 % when cutback and emulsion were implemented as recycling agent respectively as compared to that for RAP mixture.

The use of cup lump rubber as an additive in asphalt binder has recently become the main interest of the paving industry. The innovation helps to increase the natural rubber consumption and stabilize the rubber price. This study evaluates the mechanical performance of cup lump rubber modified asphalt (CMA) mixture in terms of resilient modulus, dynamic creep and indirect tensile strength under aging conditions. The CMA mixture was prepared using dense-graded Marshall-designed mix and the observed behavior was compared with that of conventional mixture. From the results, both mixtures passed the volumetric properties as accordance to Malaysian Public Work Department (PWD) specification. The addition of cup lump rubber provides better resistance against permanent deformation through the enhanced properties of resilient modulus and dynamic creep. Furthermore, the resilient modulus of CMA mixture performed better under aging conditions.

Half-warm mix asphalt (HWMA) mixtures can be produced at temperatures ranging from 100 °C to 130 °C, depending on the production methods used. The lowest mixing temperature can be achieved by using water-foamed bitumen. The mixture should be characterized by a long service life, defined by the resistance to permanent deformation and high stiffness modulus at temperatures above zero. It is therefore important to ensure the adequately high quality of the bitumen binder. Bitumen 50/70 was provided with appropriate quality foaming characteristics (expansion ratio, ER, half-life, t1/2) by adding a surface-active agent (SAA) at 0.6 wt % before foaming. Then asphalt concrete (AC) 8 S was designed and produced with the recommended water-foamed binder. Hydrated lime, an additive substantially affecting asphalt concrete mechanical parameters, was used at 0, 15, 30, and 45 wt % as a partial replacement for the limestone filler. The influence of the amount of hydrated lime on the content of voids, indirect tensile stiffness modulus at −10 °C, 0 °C, +10 °C, +20 °C, and +30 °C, and the resistance to permanent deformation was investigated. Statistical analysis of the test results showed the quantity of 30% to be the optimum hydrated lime content. The AC 8 S resistance to permanent deformation was determined at the optimum hydrated lime content. The comprehensive evaluation revealed a synergistic effect between bitumen 50/70, modified before foaming with 0.6 wt % SAA and 30 wt % hydrated lime as the limestone filler replacement, and the half warm mixture AC 8 S, in terms of the standard requirements and durability of the HWMA concrete in pavement applications.

Abstract Flexible or asphalt concrete pavement is the paving system most widely adopted all over the world. It has been recognized that there are many different types of the factors affecting the performance and durability of asphalt concrete pavement, including the service conditions, such as: the variation of temperature from mild to extremes and the repeated excessive axle loading as well as the inadequate quality of the raw materials. All of these when combined together are going to accelerate the occurrence of distresses in flexible pavement such as permanent deformation and fatigue cracking. As the result, there has an urgent need to enhance the ability of asphalt concrete mixture to resist distresses happened in pavement. Use of additives is one of the techniques adopted to improve pavement properties. It has been found that hydrated lime might be one of the effective additives because it is widely available and relatively cheap compared to other modifiers like polymers. This paper presents an experimental study of the hydrated-lime modified asphalt concrete mixtures. Five different percentages of the hydrated lime additive were investigated, namely (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 percent). The hydrated lime additive was used as partial replacement of limestone filler by total weight of the aggregate. The designed Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) concretes are for the application of three pavement courses, i.e. Surface, Leveling and Base. These mixtures are designed and tested following Marshall procedure and uniaxial repeated loading to evaluate permanent deformation at different temperatures of 20°C, 40°C and 60°C. The experimental results show that the addition of hydrated lime as a partial replacement of ordinary limestone mineral filler results a significant improvement on mechanical properties and the resistant to permanent deformation of the designed asphalt concrete mixtures.

Coarse matrix high binder (CMHB) is a gap-graded hot mix consisting of a large proportion of coarse aggregate with an asphalt binder-filler mastic. CMHB and dense-graded mixtures were compared in terms of their resistance to rutting (permanent deformation), moisture damage, aging, and water permeability. A static creep test was performed to evaluate relative rutting susceptibility. Moisture damage was assessed with the tensile strength ratio (TSR) and a boiling-water test. The effects of aging were evaluated with indirect tensile strength and resilient modulus testing. Penetration and complex shear modulus ( G*) of the recovered, aged asphalt were measured. Permeability was determined with Darcy's Law for flow through saturated, porous media. The static creep test did not indicate that CMHB mixtures were consistently more resistant to rutting in comparison with dense-graded mixtures. CMHB mixtures were found to be more resistant to moisture damage, which was indicated by higher TSR values and less visible stripping than corresponding dense-graded mixtures. The dense-graded mixtures exhibited higher resilient moduli and indirect tensile strengths after short-term and long-term aging. Penetration of binder extracted from aged CMHB mixtures was greater than that from dense-graded mixtures. Binder extracted from aged dense-graded mixtures exhibited higher G* values. The permeability of CMHB mixtures was greater than that of the dense-graded mixtures with comparable air voids.

Significant quantities of coconut shell (CS), a by-product of agriculture, can be used as an artificial source of coarse aggregates. In this study, four CSs were used as coarse aggregates replacement in asphalt concrete with 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% weight volumes. The particle sizes of the CSs used as main coarse aggregates range from 5 mm to 20 mm. The Marshall Stability test shows that the optimum bitumen content for asphalt mixtures is 5.1%. The engineering properties investigated include the volumetric, dynamic creep, indirect tensile strength, and resilient modulus. Test results show that stability decreases with increasing CS content because of high water absorption. Considering that CSs absorb bitumen, a further detailed investigation is needed to assess the performance of modified bitumen on mixture. Furthermore, the use of CSs as coarse aggregates in asphalt concrete help increase the resilient modulus, stiffness, and indirect tensile strength up to 30%. Generally, a 10% replacement of coarse aggregates with CSs is the optimal limit.

The main purpose of recycling is to reuse existing pavement material. First this paper reviews the necessary, feasibility and mechanistic analysis of recycled asphalt mixture, then summarizes the findings of a laboratory study to characterize and design recycled asphalt concrete mixtures using different tests. The laboratory tests carried out on the material were conventional test methods including unconfined compressive strength, cleavage strength, resilient modulus and shrinkage properties tests. The results of the laboratory can be taken as reference in design, engineering and further research.
