Implementation of education for sustainable development through science education to enhance the character of Indonesian golden generation

The study aims to measure the enhancing of character of Indonesian golden generation on the implementation of education for sustainable development. The data were collected by using the character self-assessment that given to senior high school students in nine provinces spread in the western, central and eastern regions of Indonesia. The instrument was adapted from character education indicators by Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education and the combination of sustainable development learning indicators. The result shows that mostly the character aspects of Indonesian golden generation can be concluded is enhance. ESD character model can enhance several character of students but still need more time to enhance student’s critical attitude and creativity. Besides, according to the result, it can inferred that implementation of education for sustainable development in science education, biology, physics, and chemistry subject can be recommended by using several learning models and one of them is ESD Character Model.

This study aimed at developing and investigating the appropriateness of education-oriented-character learning model to develop sustainability to build 2045 Indonesian golden generation. The development model was adapted from Dick and Carey Model with product trial subject to XI graders of some schools in West Nusa Tenggara. The model of character learning was implemented into Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Subjects through learning instrument which had been developed with the syntaxes of character learning model. The indicator of character assessment was adapted from character education indicators which had been combined with 21st Century Skill. The data collection instruments included self assessment and observation sheets. The findings showed that: (1) the developed character learning model had syntaxes of collect, discuss, analyze, communicate, and apply; the problem and the solution was focused on themes of environment, society, and economy; (2) education for sustainable development-oriented-character learning model which had been developed was worth applying with very good category.

Sustainable development is suggested by environmentalists as the solution for confronting the intense environmental, social and economic problems that emerge globally in the last decades. This study presents the recent features and trends of the associated concepts, like the green economy, green entrepreneurship, green professions and labour-market, with a particular reference to European Union countries. In the course of transforming the current economic model towards a green direction, vocational education appears as a fundamental prerequisite that will prepare the future workforce of green economy. In this respect, a small-scale research is also presented, recording the relevant opinions of senior high-school students in Western Attica (Greece), being an area of acute environmental, social and economic problems.

<p class="Abstrak"><strong>Abstract:</strong> The trend of 21st century education is learning based on scientific literacy. Scientific literacy is a key for improving science education in many countries in the world. This article aims to give a profile of the scientific literacy of senior high school students of class XII in the year 2019 in optic subject. This research was conducted with Survey methods. The data is done by providing scientific literacy problem in the form of essays. The subjects of research is the students of class XII at two SMAN Kerinci Regency. Results of this research is scientific literacy of students still low. So that Indonesia can afford prices in the era of the 21st century education, thope that this research can help in determining the solution for improve the ability of students ' scientific literacy.</p><strong>Abstrak:</strong> Tren pendidikan abad-21 adalah pembelajaran yang berpatokan pada Literasi Saintifik yang dijadikan sebagai kunci utama dalam meningkatkan pendidikan sains di banyak Negara di dunia. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran tentang kemampuan Literasi Saintifik siswa SMA kelas XII pada tahun 2019 terhadap materi Optik. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode survei. Teknik pengambilan data dilakukan dengan memberikan soal literasi saintifik yang berbentuk esai. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa-siswa kelas XII di dua SMAN yang ada di kabupaten Kerinci. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa literasi saintifik siswa masih rendah. Agar Indonesia mampu bersaing di era pendidikan abad-21, diharapkan penelitian ini dapat memberikan solusi dalam meningkatkan kemampuan literasi saintifik siswa.

Blood, bone marrow and organ donation is a major issue that concerns all of us. Even though 18 is the age of eligibility to become a donor, awareness should be raised earlier through education. To this end, and given that this issue is marred by prejudice and misconceptions, we developed an educational pack, aimed at senior high school students, which may be delivered in the context of a biology or sociology course. The proposed teaching intervention follows a three-fold approach: (1) First, students are educated on monoclonal antibodies and relevant biotechnology tools and their role in organ transplantation via a board game, (2) Second, we promote empathy using a free writing exercise that employs art prompts and audiovisual material, (3) Third, we assign students with research projects that involve building questionnaires, collecting and analyzing data and producing a science poster to be posted on the school website. Importantly, the aim of this proposed intervention is to educate and to raise awareness while students build on their research, technology and writing skills.

AbstractEducation for sustainable development (ESD) is essential to study in order to understand environmental changes from the perspective of student character building. This concept is the main foundation that refers to individual personality as a medium to build excellent capacity from an early age. At adolescent age, children experience a period with high emotional growth that encourages changes in attitudes and behavior patterns towards the surrounding environment. This exploratory study aimed at describing the relationship between environmental knowledge and studentsí attitudes and behaviors, along with challenging factors as the moderating variable, involving 320 participants from two junior high schools in two cities in Central Java, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using partial least square Smartpls v3.0. This study found that junior high school students had low environmental and social knowledge, but there was a good attitude and behavior tendency concerning the environment. The studentsí knowledge significantly influenced environmentally-friendly attitudes and behaviors, especially the social environment that the obstacles also became a significant moderating variable. Thus, schools and related parties should develop programs to increase the studentsí study orientation towards the environment and to have a collective awareness of the environment, specifically the ability to analyze and synthesize the surroundings.

A green physical setting would need green behavior and culture to sustain and function properly. Education is a key component to form a sustainable mindset and lifestyle for society, especially youth. As a university with a vision to be a resilient and healthy campus, Universitas Gadjah Mada has actively involved in providing education for sustainable development. The activities have commenced since 2016 through Integrated Smart and Green Building research group and involve participants from both internal and external audiences. Internal target audiences were primarily freshman UGM students and later extended to include primary and high school students. External audiences were the government and stakeholders from the commercial sector. The program was designed to increase awareness on sustainable development and encourage everyone to take part to achieve its goals. Students were educated on the importance of sustainable lifestyle and expected to practice green behavior in their daily life. For stakeholders, a focus group discussion was organized to start a conversation for the formulation of green building regulation. There were observable immediate changes in cognitive and behavorial domain toward sustainable lifestyle. Sustainable development is a long term vision and it needs participation from everyone. Higher education as a center of knowledge should actively provide society with education to achieve sustainable development.

Abstract: This study examined what character education values presented in the English textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Republic Indonesia for grade 12. This type of this research is a content analysis. The data source of this research is the English textbook for grade 12 SMA/SMK. Fourteen speaking scripts of this textbook were analysed by using content analysis to find what values inserted in it. The finding showed that there were 17 character education values presented in the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris SMA/SMK. Empat belas potongan pembicaraan dari buku teks ini dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis konten untuk menemukan nilai-nilai apa yang ada di dalamnya. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 17 nilai pendidikan karakter yang disajikan dalam buku teks bahasa Inggris berjudul Bahasa Inggris SMA/SMK. Ini berarti buku teks ini cocok sebagai bahan dan pedoman bagi guru Bahasa Inggris untuk mengajar Bahasa Inggris dan untuk mengembangkan nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter yang disarankan oleh Kurikulum 2013 kepada para siswa.Kata Kunci: nilai pendidikan karakter, analisis konten, buku teks bahasa inggris, kurikulum 2013

This research aims to compare the loneliness and hope among orphans in the Tanjung Barat orphanage, South Jakarta. The research method used a descriptive qualitative with a case study method. Data collection techniques were interviews, observations, and filling in a simple questionnaire. The sample used 36 children of Tanjung Barat orphanage consisting of elementary school, junior high school and senior high school students. This was done on site and compared to the literature that had been previously established.  Comparing loneliness and hope among orphans aimed to identify and find ways of mapping loneliness and hope among orphans who had been explored and investigated empirically, to find out the comparison and contrast with the mapping of loneliness and hope expressed among them, and to find examples of self-assessment to evaluate and encourage the mapping of their loneliness and expectations among them and present them to caregivers, parents and professionals. By comparing their loneliness and hopes they can actively engage in social interaction between themselves, others, and improve their personal, welfare and life skills.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengembangan, kelayakan dan efektifitas SSP kimia berbasis pendidikan berkelanjutan untuk meningkatkan literasi kimia dan kesadaran terhadap lingkungan peserta didik SMA. Model pengembangan diadaptasi dari model Dick & Carey dengan subjek coba produk pada peserta didik kelas X SMA Negeri 11 Yogyakarta. Instrumen pengumpulan data meliputi lembar validasi, tes literasi kimia berformat benar-salah beralasan, lembar penilaian diri dan lembar penilaian antar teman terkait kesadaran terhadap lingkungan. SSP kimia divalidasi secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) SSP kimia berbasis pendidikan berkelanjutan yang dikembangkan memiliki karakteristik yang meliputi pengembangan melalui model experiential learning pada materi hidrokarbon dan indikator literasi kimia maupun kesadaran terhadap lingkungan diadaptasi dari framework PISA 2015; serta (2) SSP kimia yang dikembangkan layak digunakan dengan kategori sangat baik serta efektif untuk meningkatkan literasi kimia dan kesadaran terhadap lingkungan peserta didik SMA berdasarkan uji Kruskal-Wallis.Kata Kunci: SSP, pendidikan berkelanjutan, experiential learning, literasi kimia, kesadaran terhadap lingkungan Developing a Chemistry Subject Specific Pedagogy Based on Sustainability Education to Enhance Chemical Literacy and Environmental Awareness AbstractThe study aims to reveal the developing, the appropriateness and the effectiveness of a chemistry subject specific pedagogy based on sustainability education to enhance chemical literacy and environmental awareness of senior high school students. Developing model adapted from Dick & Carey and the trial of this research product was conducted at SMA Negeri 11 Yogyakarta grade 10th students. The instruments for data collection included validation instrument, a true-false reasoning chemical literacy test, environmental awareness self assessment and peer assessment. The product was validated as qualitative and quatitative validation. The results of research shows: (1) the features of chemistry subject specific pedagogy based on sustainability education is using experiential learning was taught to hydrocarbons and the indicators for chemical literacy test and environmental awareness adapted from framework PISA 2015; and (2) the chemistry subject specific pedagogy based on sustainability education is valid to use with very good category and effective to enhance chemical literacy and environmental awareness based on Kruskal-Wallis test.Keywords: subject specific pedagogy, sustainability education, experiential learning, chemical literacy, environmental awareness.
