A green physical setting would need green behavior and culture to sustain and function properly. Education is a key component to form a sustainable mindset and lifestyle for society, especially youth. As a university with a vision to be a resilient and healthy campus, Universitas Gadjah Mada has actively involved in providing education for sustainable development. The activities have commenced since 2016 through Integrated Smart and Green Building research group and involve participants from both internal and external audiences. Internal target audiences were primarily freshman UGM students and later extended to include primary and high school students. External audiences were the government and stakeholders from the commercial sector. The program was designed to increase awareness on sustainable development and encourage everyone to take part to achieve its goals. Students were educated on the importance of sustainable lifestyle and expected to practice green behavior in their daily life. For stakeholders, a focus group discussion was organized to start a conversation for the formulation of green building regulation. There were observable immediate changes in cognitive and behavorial domain toward sustainable lifestyle. Sustainable development is a long term vision and it needs participation from everyone. Higher education as a center of knowledge should actively provide society with education to achieve sustainable development.

AbstractEducation for sustainable development (ESD) is essential to study in order to understand environmental changes from the perspective of student character building. This concept is the main foundation that refers to individual personality as a medium to build excellent capacity from an early age. At adolescent age, children experience a period with high emotional growth that encourages changes in attitudes and behavior patterns towards the surrounding environment. This exploratory study aimed at describing the relationship between environmental knowledge and studentsí attitudes and behaviors, along with challenging factors as the moderating variable, involving 320 participants from two junior high schools in two cities in Central Java, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using partial least square Smartpls v3.0. This study found that junior high school students had low environmental and social knowledge, but there was a good attitude and behavior tendency concerning the environment. The studentsí knowledge significantly influenced environmentally-friendly attitudes and behaviors, especially the social environment that the obstacles also became a significant moderating variable. Thus, schools and related parties should develop programs to increase the studentsí study orientation towards the environment and to have a collective awareness of the environment, specifically the ability to analyze and synthesize the surroundings.

The study aims to measure the enhancing of character of Indonesian golden generation on the implementation of education for sustainable development. The data were collected by using the character self-assessment that given to senior high school students in nine provinces spread in the western, central and eastern regions of Indonesia. The instrument was adapted from character education indicators by Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education and the combination of sustainable development learning indicators. The result shows that mostly the character aspects of Indonesian golden generation can be concluded is enhance. ESD character model can enhance several character of students but still need more time to enhance student’s critical attitude and creativity. Besides, according to the result, it can inferred that implementation of education for sustainable development in science education, biology, physics, and chemistry subject can be recommended by using several learning models and one of them is ESD Character Model.

<p>Climate change changes the pathway to reach sustainable development. However, the spirit of sustainability is neglected in Taiwan’s education system, which ignored the relationship between climate change and sustainability. This study aims to re-examine the content of climate change education, integrate the concepts of sustainable development, climate change adaptation and transition niche in 12-Year Basic Education Curricula, in order to fill the gap between the international sustainable development trend and climate change education. The methods are literature review and data-gathering methods to understand the connotation through the implementation of international education for sustainable development and climate change education. Furthermore, climate change literacy questionnaires which examined the content validity by the experts were analyzed the sustainability assessment and indicators. At last, the combination of international sustainable development concepts, literacy surveys, questionnaires, is proved to be an effective design for climate change literacy of high school students.  As a result, these can be used as an important framework for designing effective educational strategies to improve students’ climate change literacy and raise their sustainability performance in their daily life.</p><p> </p><p>Key Words: Education for sustainable development、Climate change education、Sustainability assessment and indicators、Climate change literacy</p>

Solving important social problems and promoting sustainable development requires solutions involving multiple stakeholders. Nevertheless, previous social marketing studies were limited to individual behavioral changes and lacked a perspective to involve surrounding stakeholders. This study focused on education for sustainable development (ESD) on a field trip and clarified the factors that promote students’ knowledge diffusion from the viewpoint of network externalities. A questionnaire was distributed, and responses from 1950 high school students were collected. This study used factor analysis to unveil the factors related to students’ features and field trip experiences and clarified how these factors promote driving network externalities and expanding the network through regression analysis. The findings indicated that the experiential value obtained from visiting a site with actual social problems has a large positive effect on driving network externalities and expanding the network. Therefore, encouraging driving network externalities and expanding networks by providing ESD on a field trip can contribute to solve social problems and achieve sustainable development.

This study deals with the changing occupations of Sherpa people who has been recognized as 'high altitude porter' for their courage in climbing difficult mountains. After having a lot of in person formal/informal conversation, focus group discussion and in field observations for 15 days with heterogeneous people in Khumbu region of Nepal, the study tried to find reasons of distractions of younger generation in maintaining their ancestral professions. Narrative interview has been conducted with Sherpa mountaineers, business persons, porters, young students and teachers. An effort has been made to analyze the issues of Sherpa community people through cognitive dissonance theory developed by Leon Festinger in 1957. It employs thematic analysis in three categories of participants – professional mountaineers, business people (age: 20 to 35) and high school students (age: 16 to 20) and findings have been discussed under theoretical and policies perspectives. The findings show that Sherpa people are reluctant to continue their ancestral climbing profession because of risks of life, pressure built from their family members, lack of encouragement from the Government and availability of alternatives. The study has reflected many possibilities of future research. The lapses are found in policies, relevant educational curricula, facilities and protection and promotion mechanism of tourism industries, thus, studies in these areas can help shed light on the overall situations of professionalism in this sector.  Int. Universities or institutions that operate in North Sumatra are very many, therefore, of course, competition in accepting new students is very tight, universities or institutions do certain ways or steps to be able to compete with other campuses in gaining interest from community or high school students who will continue their studies to a higher level. STMIK BUDI DARMA Medan (College of Information and Computer Management), is the first computer high school in Medan which was established on March 1, 1996 and received approval from the government through the Minister of Education and Culture, on July 23, 1996 with operating license number 48 / D / O / 1996, in promoting the campus, the team usually formed a promotion team to various regions in the North Sumatra Region to provide information to the community. Students who have learned in this campus are quite a lot who come from various regions in North Sumatra, from this point the need to process data from students who are active in college to be processed using data mining to achieve a target, one method that can be used in data mining, namely the ¬K-Modes clustering (grouping) algorithm. The UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs), which aim to solve important economic, social, and environmental problems of humanity, are to be supported by education for sustainable development (ESD). Empirical studies on the success of the implementation of the SDGs in the field of education are still pending. For this reason, using the loss of global biodiversity as an example, this study examined the extent to which high school students, teacher trainees in biology, and biology bachelor students can identify the causes of the global biodiversity loss. A new questioning tool was developed and tested on 889 participants. In addition, the relationship between connection to nature and the personal assessment about biodiversity threats was examined. The factor analysis of the scale used showed that 11 out of 16 items were assigned to the intended factor. The comparison between high school students, teacher trainees in biology, and biology bachelor students showed no significant difference in overall assessment of the reasons for global biodiversity loss. When comparing the three risk levels in which the risk factors for biodiversity could be divided, across the three student groups, only minor differences were found. Therefore, a specific education of prospective teachers is necessary, as they have to pass on the competence as multipliers to their students. No significant difference could be found when examining the relationship between connection to nature and the overall scores of the assessment scale for the reasons of biodiversity loss. However, it was found that people who felt more connected to nature were more capable of assessing the main causes of risk for global biodiversity, while people who felt less connected to nature achieved better scores for the medium factors.

A fundamental objective of environmental education (EE) and education for sustainable development (ESD) is the promotion of critical thinking, through which learners could resist messages (e.g., from TV), leading to unsustainable lifestyles and practices. The analysis of messages from media was used for: identifying influencing techniques; presenting these techniques to secondary school students allowing them to identify the techniques in messages from advertisements and assess their impact. After a very brief educational intervention, 84 per cent of the students were able to identify and decode techniques and make useful reflections. Furthermore, some techniques were tested as potentially useful for enhancing learning and/or environmental-friendly attitudes. The use of advertisement methods in teaching did not facilitate the assimilation of knowledge related to environmental science (chemistry); however, it improved the attitudes towards environmental-friendly and sustainable approaches.
