Self-regulation has been investigated on the past decades in many fields, and despite the fact thatcontributions have enlightened the understanding of a vast array of behaviors, the development ofgeneral explanatory models hardly reaches a consensus. A recent contribution on the field suggeststhat the presence or absence of a goal may lead to different self-regulatory states, in which theindividual would think and behave differently, facilitating goal achievement when there is a goal, orenvironmental adaptation, when there is not. Those states were defined as structured and unstructuredself-regulation and even though this line of research has potential to give significant contributions, it isimportant to develop a better description of those states, for example, in terms of which variables mayhave influence on the process. In an effort towards the development of a model based on the suggestedself-regulatory states, a sequence of experiments was conducted to test the moderation effects of selfcontrol(experiment 1) and self-efficacy (experiment 2) on the relation between goal presence/absenceand task performance. On experiment 1 participants were randomly selected for two groups, goal or nogoal, in which they had to perform a task with or without a specific goal. The performance on the taskwas measured and the moderation effects of self-control were investigated. On experiment 2, the sameprocedure was conducted but self-efficacy was tested as a moderator. On experiment 1 the task was tofinish a jigsaw puzzle and on experiment 2 it was the Tower of London task. At this point the resultssuggest that the model is feasible, with moderation effects found for self-control and self-efficacy. Also,the presence of a goal affected the performance on both tasks, suggesting that the model could be asignificant contribution to a better understanding of self-regulation.

Even relatively consensual theories like ego depletion have been recently questioned, and researchers are still in search of better models to describe the self-regulatory processes. A recent contribution on the field suggests that the presence or absence of goals may lead to different self-regulatory states, named as structured and unstructured regulation. No further attempts on this line of research have been made, even though it has potential to give significant contributions. The main objective of this thesis is to develop an explanatory model of self-regulation, based on the suggested self-regulatory states, which is hereby named structured and unstructured self-regulation model (SUSR). To develop the model, a sequence of experiments was designed and executed to test if the model is feasible and which variables are important to the process as moderators (experiments 1 and 2). Also, the information processing and the subsequent responses were investigated (experiment 3), and, as an attempt to verify a practical use of the model, its effects on sports performance were evaluated (experiment 4). Results suggest that the model is feasible, goal presence had different kinds of effects throughout the experiments and some of the moderators need to be further investigated, such as self-control and self-efficacy.

Self-control and self-regulated learning refer to those processes and strategies whereby individuals exert agency in facing educational demands. This study tested a structural model which predicts that self-control has direct effect on school achievement, as well as mediated by metacognitive self-regulation, academic self-efficacy, and regulatory motivational styles as the variables related to self-regulated learning. The research was carried out on a stratified random sample of 575 eighth grade students. It was shown that the effect of self-control on achievement is mediated by self-efficacy. In other words, students who have heightened selfcontrol and believe in their own ability to meet school demands will be successful in school regardless of the complexity of their learning or whether they are autonomously motivated. The implications of such a finding were considered, as well as the limitations of the research and the indications for future research.

The disciplines of physiology and ecology are united by the shared centrality of the concept of homeostasis: the stability of a complex system via internal mechanisms of self-regulation, resilient to external perturbation. In the past decade, these fields of study have been bridged by the discovery of the lung microbiome. The respiratory tract, long considered sterile, is in fact a dynamic ecosystem of microbiota, intimately associated with the host inflammatory response, altered in disease states. If the microbiome is a “newly discovered organ,” ecology is the language we use to explain how it establishes, maintains, and loses homeostasis. In this essay, we review recent insights into the feedback mechanisms by which the lung microbiome and the host response are regulated in health and dysregulated in acute and chronic lung disease. We propose three explanatory models supported by recent studies: the adapted island model of lung biogeography, nutritional homeostasis at the host-microbiome interface, and interkingdom signaling and the community stress response.

Over the past decade there has been considerable research into the effects of prior cognitive exertion on subsequent self-regulation of sport and exercise performance. In this chapter we provide an overview of how this body of literature has developed amongst two parallel, yet separate perspectives - self-control and mental fatigue – and where it currently stands. The prominent theories in the field are discussed and areas that warrant further investigation moving forward are highlighted. This includes discussion of factors known to mediate and moderate this relationship, and future directions that will help us elucidate underlying mechanisms.

The article is devoted to the study of the features of the volitional component of the personality’s psychological security and its impact on the professional success of extreme physicians. The results of the study of resuscitators and ambulance physicians (70 people, average age 47.9 years) show that a high level of volitional self-regulation is combined with such strong-willed qualities as perseverance, self-control, self-government, as well as self-control in various spheres of life. Professional success of physicians at the stage of “middle maturity” is characterized not only by a high level of development of personal, psychological and professional qualities, formed skills, effectiveness of medical manipulations, but also by high degree of self-efficacy in the fields of activity and interpersonal. The higher the level of volitional self-regulation of physicians, the higher the effectiveness of their activities according to expert assessments and self-efficacy in the field of activity. All physicians, regardless of the level of volitional self-regulation, have a high level of self-control in the emotional sphere and self-efficacy in the field of interpersonal relations, as well as well-formed professional skills and abilities.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze how, in three different contexts, the National Council for Advertising Self-Regulation narratively uses its past to build an official history concerning its origins that legitimates advertising self-control as a hegemonic narrative. Design/methodology/approach By using the historical research and the “uses of the past” approach, this study identifies, analyzes and confronts three organizational histories of Conar’s origins (both its official and unofficial versions) in the context of the creation of the Brazilian system of advertising self-regulation. Findings After a thematic analysis of the documentary sources, the narratives on the National Council for Advertising Self-Regulation’s origins and the self-control process were grouped into three versions: the narrative under the military regime: 1976/1980; the narrative during the process of re-democratization of the country: 1981/1991 and the contemporary narrative: from 2005 onwards. These narratives were confronted and, in consequence, provided, each of them, a different interpretation of the context surrounding the creation and justification for advertising self-control. Originality/value The study shows how a consumer defense organization re-historicized its past strategically to gain legitimacy in three different ways through time. It also reveals that organizations strategically use their past to build an intended vision of the future, thus having more agency than the hegemonic literature in management studies usually guarantees. Finally, it exposes the malleability of past narratives through which organizations play a critical role in the ongoing struggle for competing uses of the past. Therefore, the study identifies different organizational stories through time that allow researchers to reflect on several strategic uses of the past by organizations.

AbstractThe domains of self-regulation, self-control, executive function, inattention, and impulsivity cut across broad swathes of normal and abnormal development. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a common syndrome that encompasses a portion of these domains. In the past 25 years research on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder has been characterized by dramatic advances in genetic, neural, and neuropsychological description of the syndrome as well as clarification of its multidimensional phenotypic structure. The limited clinical applicability of these research findings poses the primary challenge for the next generation. It is likely that clinical breakthroughs will require further refinement in describing heterogeneity or clinical/biological subgroups, renewed focus on the environment in the form of etiological events as well as psychosocial contexts of development, and integration of both with biological understanding.

The research featured relationship between self-regulation and psychological competence of future specialists. The study involved an analysis of theoretical approaches to this problem in domestic and foreign psychology. Psychological competence presupposes developed psychological knowledge and communicative abilities and skills, as well as a stable system of self-regulation that allows for effective management of one's behavior during professional interaction. The author established the features of psychological and communicative competences in students, as well as such regulatory qualities as self-regulation, self-control, and self-efficacy. The research revealed statistically significant relationships between the level of development of psychological and communicative competences and the characteristics of regulatory qualities. A cluster analysis showed three groups of students with different levels of communicative competence and regulatory qualities. The regulatory and communicative components of psychological competence appeared closely interrelated. Self-regulation, self-control, self-efficacy, and communicative skills of future psychologists were the instrumental basis for the development of psychological competence. A well-developed self-regulation helped students understand and control their behavioral reactions. It enabled them to carry out conscious and focused interaction with people in problematic professional situations, as well as contributed to the development of psychological competence during vocational training.

Abstract. The neurovisceral integration model proposes that different forms of self-regulation, including the emotional suppression, are characterized by the activation of neural network whose workings are also reflected in respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). However, most of the previous studies failed to observe theoretically expected increases in RSA during emotional suppression. Even when such effects were observed, it was not clear whether they resulted from specific task demands, a decrease in muscle activity, or they were the consequence of more specific self-control processes. We investigated the relation between habitual or trait-like suppression, spontaneous, and instructed suppression with changes in RSA during negative emotion experience. A modest positive correlation between spontaneous situational and habitual suppression was observed across two experimental tasks. Furthermore, the results showed greater RSA increase among participants who experienced higher negative affect (NA) increase and reported higher spontaneous suppression than among those with higher NA increase and lower spontaneous suppression. Importantly, this effect was independent from the habitual suppression and observable facial expressions. The results of the additional task based on experimental manipulation, rather than spontaneous use of situational suppression, indicated a similar relation between suppression and RSA. Our results consistently demonstrate that emotional suppression, especially its self-regulation component, is followed by the increase in parasympathetic activity.
