In this article, I share my experience and my attempt to meet the teaching-research nexus challenge through the creation of a “staff research lab,” to engage my students with my research activities. I do this by presenting a short case history recounting the creation of the lab, its impact on students’ experience and my own.

The Lake Duparquet Research and Teaching Forest is situated in northwestern Quebec in the Boreal Shield Ecozone. Managed by two constituents of the Université du Québec, in collaboration with two forest companies, Norbord and Tembec, the Lake Duparquet Forest has a strong research program focussed on natural forest ecosystem dynamics that provides the scientific basis for management and silvicultural trials recently begun in the Forest. A bibliographical review of research activities is presented. Keywords: boreal, mixedwood, natural dynamics, fire, disturbance, ecosystem management, silviculture

In recent years new didactic concepts and approaches have been developed and evaluated at the universities. The concept for cartography lectures presented in this article is based on the close link of research and teaching/learning. The students are involved in all essential steps of a scientific project taking place during a series of lectures – beginning with the development of the scientific issues, followed by the choice and execution of the research methods and finally the presentation of the achieved outcomes. The specific project introduced here is based on self-experiments in which students took the perspective of wheelchair users entrusted with the task to map places, which are accessible for people with impairments. Among others, the goal set for the students was to develop an appropriate concept for the mobile acquisition of data and to visualise the final results by different methods of cartography.

Digital Libraries (DLs) are extremely complex information systems that support the creation, management, distribution, and preservation of complex information resources, while allowing effective and efficient interaction among the several societies that benefit from DL content and services. In this paper, we focus on our experience facing challenges of building, maintaining, and developing the Networked University Digital Library (<A HREF="http://www.nudl.org/">www.nudl.org</A>), an extension of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (<A HREF="http://www.ndltd.org/">www.ndltd.org</A>). NUDL is a worldwide initiative that addresses making the intellectual property produced in universities more accessible, stimulating international collaboration across all disciplines. We detail technological aspects of our solutions and research activities carried out to provide powerful and enriched services for the communities served by this initiative.

<p>With the teaching reform gradually deepening, the examination reform system has progressed as well. Implementing the model of separation of teaching and test based on the construction of the test database enables teachers to focus more on teaching research activities, and innovate and reform in teaching methods. The construction of the test questions database can make the test questions more rational and standardized, and enable the students to pay more attention to the learning process, so as to improve the quality of education in ethnic universities.</p>

Abstract. One of the primary activities of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology; INGV) is the production of resources concerning educational and outreach projects in geophysics and natural hazard topics. This activity is aimed at transferring, periodically, results at the forefront of ongoing research to the public through an intense and comprehensive plan for scientific dissemination. Over the past 15 years, graphic and visual communication have become essential tools for supporting institutional and research activities. In this paper, we describe successful INGV team experiences resulting from a close relationship and collaborative work between graphic designers and research scientists. The main goal of the projects devoted to the general public, through the creation of a museum exhibition or the production of descriptive brochures, is to support scientists in conveying their message and making concepts fruitful, easier to understand but also fully enjoyable thanks to the emotional involvement that images may generate. Through a careful composition of signs and images, and through the use of different visual tools (colours, form and lettering) on different media (print, video and web), the graphics and editorial products together create a strong INGV-style identity, making it easily recognizable in any educational and outreach project. A full project product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and colours, which serve the purpose of unifying the whole set. Colour is used not only to help the project logo to stand out from the international overview but, in our case, also to generate a unifying return across all INGV sections. A recent and highly stimulating experience concerned the creation of edu-games, specifically designed for scientific dissemination, through a close collaboration between INGV graphic designers and their reference scientific community. The edu-games were designed as an effective combination of educational content and playful communicative aspects, leading the young players to learn while having fun.

Promoting teachers’ professional development has become the overall goal of teachers’ training in the new era. In this article, the researches on classroom, teaching material, and examination assignment were considered as the carriers, taking the interactive process Plan-Action-Observation-Reflection as the path, so as to contribute to the project features, including the task collection and selection, materials sorting, joint R&D, and problem-solving. Through the reform of traditional teaching activities, the article particularly explored and analyzed the intention, procedure, and content of innovative Mathematics teaching research activity through the projected teaching, and researching model. It is important to pay attention to the combination of theory and practice, education and scientific research, teacher research and expert guidance, so as to enhance the teachers’ professional abilities to solve the teaching problems and promote the regional Mathematics teaching activities to a deeper level.

Abstract. The duality of research and teaching is fundamental for university systems; however, it is often experienced as stressful. A study with 819 university scholars indicated the importance of subjective perceptions of the teaching–research nexus. Such views could be differentiated in perceived integration (e. g., research is part of teaching) and perceived synergy (e. g., research enriches teaching). Structural equation modeling showed that only perceived synergy was associated with reduced occupational stress.

Archaeology produces large quantities of data, much of it already in a born-digital format. The preservation of these data is vital, as they result from unrepeatable actions, and access to and sharing of these data are the engine of research activities and knowledge development. The creation of archaeological data repositories, in addition to safeguarding data, is a valuable step in supporting research, but it requires a series of work processes, namely data standardisation and use of common nomenclatures, so published data are findable and reusable. The creation of an archaeological data repository for Portugal is a fundamental requirement. It would allow the safeguarding of data resulting from archaeological fieldwork, along with those resulting from research, making them findable, accessible and liable to be used in future research or even to be re-analysed using new technologies and tools. This article presents the evolution of the digitisation of archaeological information in Portugal, the responsibilities for its production and safeguarding, as well as the steps to be followed for its availability in a data repository.
