The main challenges in large-scale people tracking are the recognition of people density in a specific area and tracking the people flow path. To address these challenges, we present SenseFlow, a lightweight people tracking system. SenseFlow utilises off-the-shelf devices which sniff probe requests periodically polled by user’s smartphones in a passive manner. We demonstrate the feasibility of SenseFlow by building a proof-of-concept prototype and undertaking extensive evaluations in real-world settings. We deploy the system in one laboratory to study office hours of researchers, a crowded public area in city to evaluate the scalability and performance “in the wild”, andfour classrooms in the university to monitor the number of students. We also evaluate SenseFlow with varying walking speeds and different models of smartphones to investigate the people flow tracking performance

2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the Barrydale Giant Puppet Parade, a large-scale, experimental annual public puppetry event and performance in a small rural town in the Klein Karoo of South Africa. This multifaceted, collaborative puppet theatre-making process, which results annually in the creation of a parade and large-scale original performance, is co-organized by Net Vir Pret (a children’s school aftercare non-profit organisation based in the town of Barrydale) and the Laboratory of Kinetic Objects (LoKO) at the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape (CHR@UWC). The following conversation between the author (a Theatre Research Fellow at the CHR@UWC and creative director of the parade since 2014) and Sudonia Kouter (the Net vir Pret Aftercare manager and a key artistic contributor in the parade creative and directing teams) explores some of the experiences of meaning-making that arise in such a multi-layered and ambitious project.

The benefits gained in design mediated by Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology are manifold, among them stand out the early visualization, the generation of accurate 2D drawings, collaboration, verification of design intent, the extraction of cost estimates and performance evaluations. By adopting this modeling technology and using to produce, communicate and analyze architectural or engineering solutions practice is transformed. Therefore, the implementation of this new method of working in architectural design and engineering firms finds resistance, implies in adoption stages where incremental adjustments must occur to overcome difficulties and ensure learning and gaining with the new process. The Architectural and Engineering Office COORDENADORIA DE PROJETOS (CPROJ ), belonging to the School of Civil and Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of Campinas, seeks continually innovations therefore incorporated BIM in its design method. This paper presents a practical case, that is, the first large scale project developed with BIM, considered to be a BIM pilot study at CPROJ. The pilot study was the research laboratory of the Center of Molecular and Cellular Engineering of the Boldrini Children’s Hospital. Training efforts and ownership of BIM previous to the pilot study and the pilot study itself are presented. The highlights and lessons learned in this process are summarized. The understanding of how BIM changed the office production and qualitatively benefits achieved are presented.

This special issue was conceived during the 11th Annual Conference of Prognostic and Health Management Society’s Panel session on the September 25th at Scottsdale, AZ, USA. We would like to thank the panel members and their colleagues in their participation in this special issue focusing on engineered technologies for older adults. This work was partially funded by the NSF ERC seed grant from an interdisciplinary group of researchers from Iowa State University, Arizona State University, Georgia Tech, Florida State University, Chapman University and the University of California Irvine who are engaged in developing a large-scale grant proposal that will be focused on integrated technologies to promote resilient aging and reducing healthcare costs.The manuscripts exemplify our research focus and illustrates contributions in the fields of wearable smart sensors, sensor-data-fusion, machine learning and data mining, prediction and diagnosis, and electronic health records and databases - all in the context of prognostics and health management for human health and performance.We would like to thank the PHM Society for providing an opportunity to publish in their premier journal, and importantly, we are grateful for help of the Editor-in-Chief – Marcos Orchard, Ph.D. for his countless hours to edit and make it best possible of this special issue. In Cloud based Big Data applications, Hadoop has been widely adopted for distributed processing large scale data sets. However, the wastage of energy consumption of data centers still constitutes an important axis of research due to overuse of resources and extra overhead costs. As a solution to overcome this challenge, a dynamic scaling of resources in Hadoop YARN Cluster is a practical solution. This paper proposes a dynamic scaling approach in Hadoop YARN (DSHYARN) to add or remove nodes automatically based on workload. It is based on two algorithms (scaling up/down) which are implemented to automate the scaling process in the cluster. This article aims to assure energy efficiency and performance of Hadoop YARN’ clusters. To validate the effectiveness of DSHYARN, a case study with sentiment analysis on tweets about covid-19 vaccine is provided. the goal is to analyze tweets of the people posted on Twitter application. The results showed improvement in CPU utilization, RAM utilization and Job Completion time. In addition, the energy has been reduced of 16% under average workload.

Abstract “No ideas but in things!” William Carlos Williams’s leitmotif for the modernist epic Paterson seems to anticipate the current renewal of academic attention to the materialities of culture: When the Smithsonian Institution accounts for The History of America in 101 Objects (Kurin) or when Neil MacGregor, designated director of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin, aims at telling The History of the World in 100 Objects (2011), they use specimens of material culture as register and archive of human activity. Individual exhibitions explore the role of objects in movements for social and political change (Disobedient Objects, Victoria and Albert Museum, London). Large-scale national museum projects like the new Humboldt Forum in Berlin or the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., draw attention to the long existence of collections in Western institutions of learning and reveal the inherently political character of material culture—be that by underscoring the importance of institutional recognition of particular identities or by debates about provenance and restitution of human remains and status objects. The plethora of objects assembled in systematic as well as idiosyncratic collections within and outside the university is just beginning to be systematically explored for their roles in learning and education, funded by national research organizations such as the German BMBF.1 In theatrical performances, things function as discussion prompts in biographical work (Aufstand der Dinge, Schauspielhaus Chemnitz) or unfold their potential to induce a bodily experience (The Force of Things: An Opera for Objects, GK Arts Center, Brooklyn, NY). Things are present: as heritage, as commodities, as sensation; they circulate in processes of cognition and mediation, they transcend temporal and spatial distantiations. Things figure in narration and performance, in our everyday life practices, in political activism. They build knowledge of ourselves and others, influence the ways in which we interact with our fellow human beings, and in which we express or control our feelings. They combine the apparently concrete and the fleetingly abstract. Overall, things make us do things.

The issue of food security has affected the well-being of the people for centuries. Academic and industry experts have been constantly developing alternate and better ways to address this issue. One of such innovations is the concept of vertical and zero acreage farming for providing food security and ensuring environmental sustainability. However, this concept has been in its nascent stage, and its development has been sporadic for many years. This paper uses a comprehensive framework to conduct a feasibility analysis of initiating vertical farming on university campuses, which could set an example for using this technique on a large scale. A case study was conducted on a set of 24 canteens across a university in Wuhan, China for accessing the return on investment and food sufficiency using this technique. By using the central limit theorem, a model was developed after investing in 24 canteens in the university, and various scenarios were analyzed. The breakeven on implementing these farms was about 10 to 20 years, with annual profits reaching $92,000 (592,000 RMB).

The article is devoted to the consideration of ways to solve one of the actual problems in theory and methodology of training and upbringing — the problem of developing professional skills of future informatics teacher. As a way to adapt students to the profession, the possibility of their involvement in social designing was chosen. Participation in social projects contributes to the approbation and introduction of new forms and methods in teaching informatics. Expanding the experience of future teachers in carrying out large-scale events contributes to the formation of a socially adapted personality competitive in modern society. The potential of a social project in consolidating the knowledge and skills obtained during the theoretical training at the university is indicated. In the article, theoretical reasoning is accompanied by examples of real social projects and activities aimed at the formation of professional competencies of future informatics teachers.

Laws and regulations backing and governing public administration in subsoil use and protection in Ukraine is gradually gaining priority and importance given incoming energy security and resource self-sufficiency risks alerts for the State as one of the warrants for political and economic independence and guarantees for the people of Ukraine to enjoy and plenipotentiary implement its propitiatory rights set forth in the Constitution of Ukraine with regard to natural resources and benefits that constitute the genuine wealth of the nation. The article is written with the application of inductive reasoning and performance of various research methods, such as case studies, phenomenological study with some focus on nature and source of laws and administrative functions, grounded theory study; also a deep comparative analysis of domestic and overseas legal patterns is carried out. The article is devoted to the research of problems with regard to public administration in the field of subsoil use and protection in Ukraine. The author emphasizes that determination of public administration in the field of subsoil use and protection is a form of public managerial activities of public administration authorities (state authorities, local self-government bodies, self-governing public organizations with the respective competence). It is suggested that these activities are aimed at implementation of the policies in the field of geological exploration of mineral resources, mineral extraction, construction of underground and terrestrial facilities not related to the extraction of minerals, subsoil and environmental protection and they are based on the principles of interaction between subject and object of public administration, discretion, mutual responsibility, self-governance and decentralization when public services are provided. Also, the article presents many judicial practice of the European Court of Human Rights and Citizen, the Supreme Court in the field of public administration in the field of subsoil use and protection. In concluding notes amendments to Subsoil Code of Ukraine, methodology for calculating the initial selling price for the sale of special permit, selection procedures for open special permit tender bid winners and responsibility for subsoil use abandonment costs are suggested by the author.
