The benefits gained in design mediated by Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology are manifold, among them stand out the early visualization, the generation of accurate 2D drawings, collaboration, verification of design intent, the extraction of cost estimates and performance evaluations. By adopting this modeling technology and using to produce, communicate and analyze architectural or engineering solutions practice is transformed. Therefore, the implementation of this new method of working in architectural design and engineering firms finds resistance, implies in adoption stages where incremental adjustments must occur to overcome difficulties and ensure learning and gaining with the new process. The Architectural and Engineering Office COORDENADORIA DE PROJETOS (CPROJ ), belonging to the School of Civil and Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of Campinas, seeks continually innovations therefore incorporated BIM in its design method. This paper presents a practical case, that is, the first large scale project developed with BIM, considered to be a BIM pilot study at CPROJ. The pilot study was the research laboratory of the Center of Molecular and Cellular Engineering of the Boldrini Children’s Hospital. Training efforts and ownership of BIM previous to the pilot study and the pilot study itself are presented. The highlights and lessons learned in this process are summarized. The understanding of how BIM changed the office production and qualitatively benefits achieved are presented.

ENGLISHThe article presents and discusses an experience in Brazil on an architectural design method of teaching created by the School of Architecture and Urban Design of the University of Sao Paulo (FAU USP). We refer to a Pedagogical Reform proposed in 1962 and its consequences on the formation of Brazilian architects. Known as the 1962 Reform and having as its leader, in association with other professors, architect and professor João Batista Vilanova Artigas (1913-1985), the proposed new model for a method of project education ended up by being adopted, in some aspects, but not all, by the majority of Brazilian schools of architecture and urban design. The reform led by Vilanova Artigas proposed an overcoming of project teaching methods based either on the traditional model of architectural composition, by way of the School of Fine Arts, or on those for the formation of architect-engineers, by way of the Polytechnics. This new teaching method would be based on parameters for the comprehension of architectural practice, pointing to a generalist formation of the architect, thus instrumentalizing him to act within the various scales of architectural production: objects, buildings, cities and visual communication. In this context is manifested the intention for the creation of a University of Design, founded on the practice of investigation and studio research, thus overcoming the boundaries of a project scale in a school of architecture, limited between the realization of a building scale and, at most, of a city. To understand this generalist and plural outlook becomes a contribution to the discussion on the formation of contemporary architects and their awareness and instrumentalization for action before the complex professional demands of present day societies. PORTUGUÊSO artigo apresenta e discute uma experiência no Brasil de método e ensino de projeto de arquitetura, elaborado pela Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo, a FAU USP. Referimo-nos a uma Reforma Pedagógica proposta no ano de 1962 e as suas consequências à formação dos arquitetos brasileiros. Conhecida como a Reforma de 1962 e tendo como seu líder, associado a outros professores, o arquiteto e professor João Batista Vilanova Artigas (1913-1985), o novo modelo proposto de método de ensino de projeto passou a ser adotado, sob alguns aspectos, mas não todos, pela maior parte das Faculdades de Arquitetura e Urbanismo brasileiras. A reforma liderada por Vilanova Artigas propunha uma superação dos métodos de ensino de projeto baseados ou no modelo tradicional de composição de arquitetura, via Escolas de Belas Artes, ou então naqueles de formação de arquitetos-engenheiros, via Escolas Politécnicas. O método de ensino proposto iria se basear em novos parâmetros de compreensão da prática da arquitetura, apostando em uma formação generalista do arquiteto, instrumentalizando-o a atuar nas várias escalas de produção arquitetônica: objetos, edifícios, cidades e comunicação visual. Nesse contexto manifesta-se a intenção de criação de uma Universidade do Projeto, fundada na prática de investigação e na pesquisa do ateliê, superando assim o limite da escala de projeto de uma Faculdade de Arquitetura, limitada entre a realização da escala do edifício e, quando muito, da cidade. Compreender essa formação generalista e plural coloca-se como contribuição à discussão da formação do arquiteto contemporâneo e a sua sensibilização e instrumentalização para ação frente às complexas demandas profissionais das sociedades atuais.

Over the past few decades, digital tools have become indispensable in the field of architecture. The complex design tasks that make up architectural design methods benefit from utilizing advanced simulation software and, consequently, design solutions have become more nature-adapted and site-specific. Computer simulations and performance-oriented design enable us to address global challenges, such as climate change, in the preliminary conceptual design phase. In this paper, an innovative architectural design method is introduced. This method consists of the following: (1) an analysis of the local microclimate, specifically the wind situation; (2) the parametric shape generation of the airport terminal incorporating wind as a form-finding factor; (3) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis; and (4) wind-performance studies of various shapes and designs. A combination of programs, such as Rhinoceros (Rhino), and open-source plug-ins, such as Grasshopper and Swift, along with the post-processing software Paraview, are utilized for the wind-performance evaluation of a case study airport terminal in Reykjavik, Iceland. The objective of this wind-performance evaluation is to enhance the local wind situation and, by employing the proposed architectural shape, to regulate the wind pattern to find the optimal wind flow around the designed building. By utilizing the aforementioned software, or other open-source software, the proposed method can be easily integrated into regular architectural practice.

2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the Barrydale Giant Puppet Parade, a large-scale, experimental annual public puppetry event and performance in a small rural town in the Klein Karoo of South Africa. This multifaceted, collaborative puppet theatre-making process, which results annually in the creation of a parade and large-scale original performance, is co-organized by Net Vir Pret (a children’s school aftercare non-profit organisation based in the town of Barrydale) and the Laboratory of Kinetic Objects (LoKO) at the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape (CHR@UWC). The following conversation between the author (a Theatre Research Fellow at the CHR@UWC and creative director of the parade since 2014) and Sudonia Kouter (the Net vir Pret Aftercare manager and a key artistic contributor in the parade creative and directing teams) explores some of the experiences of meaning-making that arise in such a multi-layered and ambitious project.

The incorporation of geothermal energy in heating and electricity production has rapidly increased during the last three decades. This paper focuses on the use of shallow geothermal energy in asphalt pavement, herein called Ground Coupled Hydronic Asphalt Pavement (GCHAP) system. GCHAP consists of a series of pipes embedded within the asphalt layer coupled with another network of pipes embedded in the soil. A circulating fluid acts to exchange the heat energy between the soil and the asphalt layer. The system can be used for cooling the pavement, which results in decreasing permanent deformation in the summer. This paper presents a study on the constructability and performance of such systems on a large-scale section. Numerical analyses and a pilot study were conducted to select the system design components. A 9.6 x 4 meter GCHAP section was constructed on a municipal road in addition to another control section. The secondary network of pipes was placed three meters below the ground. Sensors were embedded within the GCHAP system to record and compare the temperature of the pavement to that of the control section. The results showed that GCHAP section can decrease the pavement temperature leading to an increase in resistance to permanent deformation. Moreover, the constructability study showed the importance of performing a pilot study before constructing the system to ensure the resilience of the pipes.

The paper examines the issues of building maintenance of public buildings from an architectural design-based perspective.It considered the critical role design plays in achieving the optimal functionality of building services throughout the building life span. Design related elements and components which facilitate maintainability are discussed. Institutional buildings at the university in their current state are considered against these dimensions. The research adopts a case study/ review approach. The study focused on multi-story structures existing in the university. Findings of the study reveal poor considerations for maintainability in design processes, resulting in inefficiency of building services on a large scale.

Pilot study is an essential initial step of a survey. The paper aims to explore the validity and reliability of the instrument in the pilot study stage before implementing large scale study of the mediating role of innovativeness between innovation strategy, organizational atmosphere, organizational culture and hotel performance in Thailand. The data were collected from 60 three to five stars hotel in Thailand. In this study using PLS-SEM 3.2.8 software for data analysis. The main results of the study found that content validity greater than 0.90, the cronbach’s alpha coefficient value of all the five constructs ranged from 0.747 to 0.928. Furthermore, the results of the composite reliability were above 0.70 which is acceptable confirmed that the instruments have a good reliability. Additionally, the results confirmed that the instruments were fit to be used for the actual study.

This special issue was conceived during the 11th Annual Conference of Prognostic and Health Management Society’s Panel session on the September 25th at Scottsdale, AZ, USA. We would like to thank the panel members and their colleagues in their participation in this special issue focusing on engineered technologies for older adults. This chapter describes the important role that the concept of ePortfolio plays in new pedagogical paradigms in The Netherlands. ePortfolio can be seen both as a consequence of and a stimulus for the movement towards student-centered, competence-based learning in Dutch higher education. The authors present lessons learned in ePortfolio implementation, derived from experience from the past five years in the Low Countries, both in local institutional projects and in large-scale national projects. They then describe the cases of their own universities, being Windesheim University for Professional Education and the University of Amsterdam. The chapter ends with conclusions and future developments in the field of ePortfolio in The Netherlands.

Abstract In 2018, the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) participated in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge for the first time in the school’s history. An interdisciplinary team of students designed and fabricated a two-person, human-powered rover which competed against 100 other colleges and universities. Based on their success, in 2019 UDC again formed a team to participate in the challenge, improving on the 2018 rover design and performance. This paper reports the process of implementing this experiential learning activity and how this project has contributed to the STEM curriculum at UDC, and recruitment and participation of underrepresented STEM students. Lessons learned from implementing this project is also shared and discussed in this paper.

With the demand on integrated construction of large scale LNG facilities in non-slide way zone at marine construction site, finite element analysis with parametric modeling technology (ANSYS-APDL) are conducted to simulate nonlinear relationship of basement and the state of foundation settlement at the construction stage. Structural analysis models are simplified from 3D architecture models of build order in building information modeling (BIM) system through MATLAB interface development. Unfavorable settlement effects are examined by detailed analysis cases studying. The prediction results can guide installation and temporary reinforcement measures of large scale structures.
