Proper planning which is the key element in ensuring infrastructure efficiency, relies on demand analysis. Among the various trips under the domain of demand analysis educational trips occupy a significant part and hence the knowledge about patterns and attitudes of these trips is important to policymakers and infrastructure planners. The current study analyzes the mode choice of graduate-level engineering students in Kathmandu valley where the current transportation system is facing multiple problems thus requiring a proper planning intervention. This study reveals the educational mode preference among the students of engineering colleges. The reveal preference survey was conducted at the various engineering colleges in Kathmandu valley. The study concludes that the travel distance, number of siblings, and vehicle ownership effects the selection of personal modes of transport and distance effects the selection of public transportation, walking option being base criteria for both the cases. It is recommended that existing walking conditions should be improved within the educational zones while public transport which are preferred options for long journeys be designed considering movement between zones.

The new Yogyakarta International Airport began operations with an airport area of 645.63 hectares with a capacity of 14 million passengers a year. Access to the Yogyakarta international airport is distributed to 4 routes to the airport at Wates national road, Karangnongko road, the Southern Cross Road, Daendels road which is using the railroad mode. This study uses revealed preference analysis which is the approach by conveying a fact choice statement to be given an assessment by the respondent. The sample collection is assumed by the peak passenger of the Adisucipto airport, because the Yogyakarta International Airport is recently opened. It is expected to be able to represent demand predictions at the Yogyakarta International airport in the future. The results of the questionnaire were then processed by using statistical analysis to determine the factors that influence the selection of transportation modes to and from the airport. In research, the factors that influence mode choice are travel costs, travel time, travel distance, and generalized costs. The results illustrate that prospective air transport users are more dominant in choosing travel cost attributes compared to other attributes that influence. With the coefficient of determination is 0.528 and the results of data analysis for the selection of mode of transportation using private vehicles is 57% and public transportation is 43%..

With increased demand for air travel, airports have become economic engines of the regional development that connect aviation systems with other modes of transportation facilitating the movement of people and cargo. Originating air passengers account for the majority of passenger trips to and from an airport and have different ground access needs. Since the air transportation is interrelated to ground transportation, studying ground access mode choice of airport users is a crucial part of airport management and system planning. The purpose of this study is to identify Dubai International Airport (DXB) ground access mode characteristics and users located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has not been studied previously. Although there are many different modes of transportation serving the airport, yet personal vehicles are the main mode used to arrive to the airport. Binary logistic regression models are developed to evaluate access mode choice for originating air travelers focusing on the mix between private vehicle and public transportation system (taxi, limousine, bus network, and Dubai metro) using data collected specifically for this study. A total of 1012 air travelers were interviewed and completed the questionnaire in December 2014. Models result showed that access mode choice is significantly affected by different socio-economic characteristics of travelers including income, nationality, household size, vehicle ownership; and different trip characteristics that include number of travelers and how often air travelers use public ransportation in their community.

Abstract With the operation of the Electric Rail Train in the Jakarta Kota-Tanjung Priok route at the end of 2015, it is estimated that there is a potential for the transfer of passengers from other modes to the Electric Rail Train. The purpose of this study is to estimate the factors that influence passenger preferences in traveling on the Jakarta Kota-Tanjung Priok route and form a demand analysis tool in the form of a modal choice model. The analysis was carried out using the binomial logit model approach which was developed based on the stated preference survey results on public transportation passengers that traveled on the similar route as the route where the Electric Rail Train operates. The factors included in the stated preference survey were obtained through literature studies and interviews, and through a pilot survey 3 factors were chosen which most influenced the mode choice. Based on the results of the correlation test, it was found that the variable that most influences the mode choice is the tariff. Keywords: passenger preferences, choice model, stated preference, tariff  Abstrak Dengan beroperasinya Kereta Rel Listrik rute Jakarta Kota–Tanjung Priok pada akhir tahun 2015, diperkirakan terdapat potensi perpindahan penumpang dari moda lainnya ke Kereta Rel Listrik. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memperkirakan faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi preferensi penumpang dalam melakukan perjalanan di rute Jakarta Kota–Tanjung Priok dan membentuk perangkat analisis permintaan berbentuk model pemilihan moda. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan model logit binomial yang dikembangkan berdasarkan hasil survei stated preference terhadap penumpang angkot yang melalui rute yang sama dengan rute Kereta Rel Listrik. Faktor-faktor yang dimasukkan dalam survei stated preference diperoleh melalui studi literatur dan wawancara, dan melalui survei pilot dipilih 3 faktor yang dinilai paling memengaruhi pilihan moda. Berdasarkan hasil uji korelasi ditemukan bahwa variabel yang paling berpengaruh terhadap pilihan moda adalah tarif. Kata-kata kunci: preferensi penumpang, model pemilihan, stated preference, tarif

Good infrastructure and transportation facilities move people and goods take place safely and economically in terms of time and cost. The trips made by people on weekdays or weekends affect environmental conditions in the area. The purpose of this paper is to find out the influence of socioeconomic status on modes choice of transportation both on weekdays and weekends. The study location is in Manado Municipality. There are 3 (three) modes of transportation reviewed, i.e. private cars, motorcycles, and public transportation. Indicators of socioeconomics status of transportation users are age, education, occupation, income, number of family members, and vehicle ownership. Data regarding the modes of transportation and socioeconomic status of travelers were obtained through questionnaire surveys. SEM-AMOS was used to measure the validity and reliability of the data. The probability of the mode choice on weekdays and weekends was analyzed using multinomial logistic regression analysis. The results showed that the socioeconomic status of the traveler has an influence on the mode choice of transportation by 49.2% on weekends and 49.5% on weekdays. Furthermore, the probability of transportation mode choice on weekends is the car by 88.4%, and on weekdays is motorcycles by 71.6%.

Abstract The impacts of work characteristics on travel mode choice behavior has been studied for a long time, focusing on the work type, income, duration, and working time. However, there are no comprehensive studies on the influence of travel behavior. Therefore, this study examines the influence of work environment as a mediator of socio-economic variables, trip characteristics, transportation infrastructure and services, the environment and choice of transportation mode on work trips. The mode of transportation consists of three variables, including public transportation (bus rapid transit and mass rapid transit), private vehicles (cars and motorbikes), and online transportation (online taxis and motorbike taxis online). Multivariate analysis using the partial least squares-structural equation modeling method was used to explain the relationship between variables in the model. According to the results, the mediating impact of work environment is significant on transportation choices only for environmental variables. The mediating mode choice effect is negative for public transportation and complimentary for private vehicles and online transportation. Other variables directly affect mode choice, including the influence of work environment.

Abstract Background The patient ranking process for donor lung allocation in the United States is carried out by a classification-based, computerized algorithm, known as the match system. Experts have suggested that a continuous, points-based allocation framework would better serve waiting list candidates by removing hard boundaries and increasing transparency into the relative importance of factors used to prioritize candidates. We applied discrete choice modeling to match run data to determine the feasibility of approximating current lung allocation policy by one or more composite scores. Our study aimed to demystify the points-based approach to organ allocation policy; quantify the relative importance of factors used in current policy; and provide a viable policy option that adapts the current, classification-based system to the continuous allocation framework. Methods Rank ordered logistic regression models were estimated using 6466 match runs for 5913 adult donors and 534 match runs for 488 pediatric donors from 2018. Four primary attributes are used to rank candidates and were included in the models: (1) medical priority, (2) candidate age, (3) candidate’s transplant center proximity to the donor hospital, and (4) blood type compatibility with the donor. Results Two composite scores were developed, one for adult and one for pediatric donor allocation. Candidate rankings based on the composite scores were highly correlated with current policy rankings (Kendall’s Tau ~ 0.80, Spearman correlation > 90%), indicating both scores strongly reflect current policy. In both models, candidates are ranked higher if they have higher medical priority, are registered at a transplant center closer to the donor hospital, or have an identical blood type to the donor. Proximity was the most important attribute. Under a points-based scoring system, candidates in further away zones are sometimes ranked higher than more proximal candidates compared to current policy. Conclusions Revealed preference analysis of lung allocation match runs produced composite scores that capture the essence of current policy while removing rigid boundaries of the current classification-based system. A carefully crafted, continuous version of lung allocation policy has the potential to make better use of the limited supply of donor lungs in a manner consistent with the priorities of the transplant community.

AbstractMillennials, the demographic cohort born in the last two decades of the twentieth century, are reported to adopt information and communication technologies (ICTs) in their everyday lives, including travel, to a greater extent than older generations. As ICT-driven travel-based multitasking influences travelers’ experience and satisfaction in various ways, millennials are expected to be affected at a greater scale. Still, to our knowledge, no previous studies have specifically focused on the impact of travel multitasking on travel behavior and the value of travel time (VOTT) of young adults. To address this gap, we use an original dataset collected among Northern California commuters (N = 2216) to analyze the magnitude and significance of individual and household-level factors affecting commute mode choice. We estimate a revealed-preference mode choice model and investigate the differences between millennials and older adults in the sample. Additionally, we conduct a sensitivity analysis to explore how incorporation of explanatory factors such as attitudes and propensity to multitask while traveling in mode choice models affects coefficient estimates, VOTT, and willingness to pay to use a laptop on the commute. Compared to non-millennials, the mode choice of millennials is found to be less affected by socio-economic characteristics and more strongly influenced by the activities performed while traveling. Young adults are found to have lower VOTT than older adults for both in-vehicle (15.0% less) and out-of-vehicle travel time (15.7% less), and higher willingness to pay (in time or money) to use a laptop, even after controlling for demographic traits, personal attitudes, and the propensity to multitask. This study contributes to better understanding the commuting behavior of millennials, and the factors affecting it, a topic of interest to transportation researchers, planners, and practitioners.
