Hypericum cordifolium is a medicinal plant traditionally used for the treatment of the menstrual disorder, backache, dislocation of bone, fever, diarrhea and dysentery due to the presence of potential bioactive secondary metabolites. Ethanolic extract of dried leaf powder was prepared using the Soxhlet apparatus, followed by qualitative phytochemical screening with different reagents. In-vitro cytotoxicity assay was screened by using brine shrimp bioassay and LC50 was calculated by probit analysis. Alkaloids, glycosides, amino acids, and fixed oils were present at very minute level whereas saponin, phenol and flavonoids were present at significant level. Cytotoxicity assay of the leaf extract showed significant results (p<0.05).LC50   of 273 ppm, which was less than 1000 ppm, showing that the plant is toxic. The study revealed that the plant possessed medicinal values, which could justify the ethno-medicinal importance scientifically. This research has pointed out further possibilities of works to be done on this virgin plant creating the opportunity for scientific researches to give birth of potent lead molecules.

The aim of present study was to investigate the preliminary phytochemical, physicochemical, TLC, minerals analysis and In-vitro antioxidant activity of leaves of ethanolic extract of Heldigardia populifolia. The preliminary phytochemical screening of ethanolic extract showed the presence of triterpenoids, flavonoids, glycosides, sterols, steroids, phenols, carbohydrates and saponins. The composition of minerals found in the leaf powder was within the permissible limits. TLC analysis of ethanol extract showed the five spots which indicate the presence of five phytoconstituents. The extractive value of ethanol was high than acetone. Ash values were within the limits. The in-vitro antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract increased with increasing the concentration. The ethanolic extract in all the concentration showed the significant antioxidant activity.

Objective: In this study, the leaf powder of Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa. was subjected to preliminary phytochemical and in vitro antioxidant analysis. Methods: The freshly prepared plant leaf extract was subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening, which revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, and steroids. Reducing power, superoxide (SO) anion radical, nitric oxide (NO) radical, and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays were carried out to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the methanolic leaf extract of this plant. The amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid compounds were also determined. Results: This study has revealed that the A. marmelos (L.) Correa. leaf extract showed considerably high amounts of most of the phytochemicals, total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic, and flavonoid content. The study also indicated that the A. marmelos (L.) Correa. showed comparatively good scavenging activity, i.e., inhibition of hydroxyl radical, NO and SO anion scavenging and reducing power activities when compared with the respective standards. Conclusion: The leaf powder of A. marmelos (L.) Correa. can be used as easily accessible source of natural antioxidant and as a possible food supplement or in pharmaceutical industry.

Five traditional herbal preparations were sampled between May-June, 2009 in Kano. The samples were investigated for invitro antibacterial activities against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus. Likewise, phytochemical screening tests were conducted to determine some of the phytochemicals present in the ethanolic and water extracts of the samples. Various concentrations of the extracts were prepared using serial doubling dilutions (5000=l/ml, 2500=g/ml, 1250=g/ml, 625=g/ml and 312.5=g/ml). All the test extracts showed slight antibacterial activity against the test organism, with ethanolic extract of sample E having the highest zone diameter of inhibition, while sample H had the lowest diameter of inhibition. The standard antibiotic disc (Gentamicin) had demonstrated the highest activity on the test organisms. The results of the Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of steroid in all the samples, tannin in samples A, C, D and E, reducing sugars in sample A, D and E respectively. The result of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was found to be above 312.5=g/ml for samples C, D and E. The present investigation is carried out to study the invitro cytotoxicity of ethanol extract of Syzygium samarangense leaves on HeLa cell line by using MTT assay. Ethanol extract of S. samarangense showed concentration dependent activity on HeLa cell line with IC50 value of 40.5 μg/ml which shows that ethanol extract of S. samarangense posses significant cytoxicity.Moreover the preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of fatty acids, alkaloids, flavonoids, terphenoids, saponins, tannins and steroids which are responsible for its cytotoxicity. There are only a few reports are available for cytotoxicity of ethanol extract of S. samarangense.

Several efforts have been made to discover new anticancer agents based on natural ingredients. Meanwhile, previous studies have shown that different Pine genus species exhibit cytotoxic activity against various types of cancer cells. This plant is rich in phenolic compounds, especially procyanidins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the in vitro cytotoxicity of Pinus merkusii needles extract on HeLa cancer cell lines. The cytotoxicity assessment was measured using MTT assay and expressed as IC50 value. The results showed that the ethanolic extract poses a dose and time-dependent cytotoxic activity with an IC50 value of 542.5 µg/ml at 48 hours of incubation. Based on this result, Pinus merkusii needles’ ethanolic extract has the potential of a novel candidate for an anticancer agent.

Sesbania grandiflora Linn. is perennial branching, small erect quick-growing short-lived soft-wooded tree, mostly cultivated in southeast Asian countries including India and grows primarily in hot, humid environments. This study investigated on phytochemical values- total phenolic flavonoid, tannins and saponin contents for Sesbania grandiflora leaf extracts. The total antioxidant capacity, DPPH, reducing power, superoxide scavenging and Iron chelating effects were examined by established methods. In-vitro cytotoxicity by brine shrimp bioassay. Both the extracts of Sesbania grandiflora were found to possess moderate to high amounts of phytochemical contents. The total phenolic, flavonoid and saponin contents were found significantly higher in EQSG whereas tannins were more in AQSG. The EQSG and AQSG possessed low IC50 for H2O2 Scavenging (32.9, 27.3µg/ml), TAC (35.6, 41.8µg/ml) and moderate for DPPH (114.9, 113µg/ml) and reducing power (176.3, 181.6µg/ml) respectively. The Brine shrimp lethality bioassay showed a significantly high LC50 value with EQSG (10313µg/ml) and AQSG (12773µg/ml) compared to cyclophosphamide (110µg/ml) in cytotoxic assay. The results evidenced the potential of Sesbania grandiflora Linn. as potent drug with antioxidant and cytotoxic activity and could be useful for preparation of nutraceuticals for pharmaceutical use in the treatment of various human diseases and its complications

Objective: Arbenan (Duchesnea indica) plants contain saponins, flavonoids, and tannins which have antioxidant activity. The purpose of this research is to perform formulation and evaluation extract ethanol of Arbenan leaves in the form of serum which is pharmaceutically stable. Method: Arbenan leaf powder was macerated with ethanol solvent, and then left for 3-4 days while stirring repeatedly, and then filtering. Furthermore, the liquid ethanol extract that has been obtained is evaporated using a Rotary Vacum Evaporator was used to evaporate the extract. Prepared extract was used to evaluate various parameters like organoleptics, homogeneity, viscosity, and pH. Result: All formulations were having typical smell, light brown color and a little thick consistency. Formulations of leaf extract of Arabenan with four variations bases have shown to have good stability after stress condition. It can be seen from the evaluation result are organoleptics, homogeneity, viscosity, rheology, and pH.
