The aim of this article is to contextualize the implications of the expansion of digital culture in the on-going dis- cussions about the relations between sustainability and information and communication technologies. In order to relate the development of a global digital communication web, its effects on cultural processes and the issues of ecosystem and hu- man sustainability that humanity is facing, I will relate and elaborate on three aspects: 1) A Batesonean perspective on sustainability 2) The recent evolution of the technosphere, and 3) Yuri Lotman’s notion of Semiosphere and his semiotic theory of culture. This path will lead me to delineate some of the eco-ethical dimensions implied in the development of pervasive digital-interactive-immersive-representational technologies.

During the last years, due to the wide spread of World Wide Web (WWW), the Internet has become one of the most valuable and effective communications media and the most inclusive source of information. However, in many cases the difficulties of establishing universal effective access could serve to reinforce current patterns of social exclusion and produce barriers to balanced development instead of supporting it. World widely there is a rising concern over the so-called “digital divide”–a term that refers to the gap existing in the opportunities to access advanced information and communication technologies between geographic areas or by individuals at different socioeconomic levels. The experience shows that specialized initiatives are needed for disadvantaged areas in order to anticipate expansion of current digital divide. This chapter is focusing on the specific instance of digital divide occurring in rural territories, and examines the ways to foster digital culture among citizens, utilizing a specific initiative (the so called “Telecentres”).

The present chapter provides a conceptual framework for the newest digital communication tools and for the practices they encourage, stressing the communication opportunities they offer and the limitations they impose. In this chapter, Internetbased communication technologies are regarded as the most recent step in the development of communication technologies. This approach helps have a broad perspective on the changes information and communication technologies (ICT) are bringing along in the social practices of so called knowledge society. As a matter of fact, these changes need to be considered within an “ecological” approach, that is, an approach that provides a very wide overview on the whole context (both in synchronic terms and in diachronic ones) where ICT are spreading. In the second part of the chapter, the authors present two examples of relevant social practices that are challenged by the most recent ICT, namely journalism (news market) and Internet search engines.

The methodological procedure that guided the development of this study was based on the realization of a systematic literature review in Scielo databases. The choice for this type of research was due to enable the researcher to have contact with the knowledge already produced in the "Technologies and School Management" as well as the possibility of understanding and identifying the main ideas that guide the theme in question here . It conducted a survey of scientific publications, producedin Brazil in the last 10 years between 2004 to 2014, discussing the use of information and communication technologies in school, especially articulated to the school management. The descriptors used were: "Technologies in School" and "School Management". The main results obtained from this study, which does not exhaust the wealth the theme, highlights the importance of developing training processes that promote service to school managers and their teams moments of reflections in pairs and the perceived need of building a collaborative and digital culture in schools.

The SARS-COV-2 pandemic has placed the entire planet under a global health threat, but it has also provided a golden opportunity for us to make the digital transition. With the successive confinements and restrictions on circulation and communication to which we were subjected, we had to look for other models of relationships, work, and learning. In a few months, the Portuguese went from an essentially playful and informative use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to an intensive work, academic, and communicational use.

The transmission of digital culture is one of the most important challenges of the current education system. The European Union proposes, through the Europe 2020 Strategy, to improve the accessibility, use and quality of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in rural areas. For this to be possible, digitally competent material and professional resources are required. This study aims to know the reality of rural schools in the province of Albacete, in terms of the quality of ICT, the available resources and the digital skills of their teachers. For this, a descriptive methodology has been used and the questionnaire has been used as an information collection instrument. The results show that the political intentions do not match the reality found in our data. Technological infrastructures lack sufficient quality to enable internet access in a safe and efficient way. On the other hand, teachers who carry out their work in these centers make limited use of the technologies in these classrooms, characterized by being multilevel, due to the lack of training in digital skills.

This paper shows how digitally-excluded senior citizens use information and communication technologies (ICT) for the construction of new literacies in the digital convergence culture. The concept of literacies is related to how ICT can be used to expand ways people express themselves through different communication channels. This study lasted three years and involved 16 adults aged between 60 to 78 years. The results showed that they were able to insert themselves into the digital culture with a more critical and creative attitude. Also, during this study it was possible to identify four types of literacies: automatic, functional, conscious and contextual.

The ubiquity of information and communication technologies, the existence of a "digital culture" actualizes the need for the development of media competence of an individual. The objectives of our study were to evaluate and compare the levels of media competence of schoolchildren and students on the motivational component, which includes the motives of contact with media and media texts, the contact component as a frequency of communication with the media, information, creative, perceptual, evaluative and practical components. When conducting an empirical study, we used modified blocks of questions of A.V. Fedorov's methodology to identify the level of development of media competence and developed a number of creative tasks to measure the level of media competence on a number of its indicators. In the course of the study, the assessment and comparison of the levels of development of media competence of schoolchildren and junior students on the above indicators was carried out. Based on the results of comparison of media competence indicators, analysis of the characteristics of media consumption, respondents’ writings and essays, the reasons for choosing media resources, we have identified a completely insufficient development of critical thinking of students and schoolchildren. The obtained data served as the basis for the development of an experimental media pedagogical program for the development of students' media competence in extracurricular activities, their reflexive abilities and critical perception. Based on the results of an empirical study, we have developed a number of practical recommendations for teachers of general education schools and those working in the system of additional education and interested in the development of media competence of students.

We live in a digital culture and cyber era. Cyberculture is an extensive concept including information and communication technologies, media and new media, theories, ideas, literature, art, design, and cultural studies. On the other hand, Lev Manovich updates new media and it reflects the characteristics of new avant-garde because of new digital hardware and software technology. New media has a new aesthetic potential, so does cyberculture. The rise of cyber culture has made it necessary to underline the relationship between graphic design and cyber culture and made it necessary to show key design elements of cyber-aesthetics. In this context, by using descriptive method, the chapter focuses on some components of aesthetics and cyber-aesthetics in the frame of relationship between graphic design and cyber-culture. Now, there is a global pandemic (COVID-19). Some graphic design examples came out during this global pandemic. These examples will be evaluated in terms of cyber-graphic design, cyber-aesthetics, and cyber-culture.
