This is a revised and updated version of Alexander’s book published in 2010 under the same title. The changes are minor; there are some additional reflections on the subject of Spiritualism by the author, but mainly they consist of additional accounts from sitters who have taken part in séances with Alexander since the original publication. Some appear in additional chapters described as “seminars,” reported chronologically, but in fact they are also witness accounts of séance experiences. The most significant addition, in terms of reporting startling new phenomena, is the Epilogue provided by American journalist and author Leslie Kean. There is no index. I found this book very readable. Also, having read it, I would find it difficult to disagree with the descriptions of Alexander by the late David Fontana (who provided the Foreword) and Annette Childs (who provided An Appreciation) as a person of integrity and dedication, as well as intelligence and good humour; in fact, “a true gentleman” (p.xxiii).

It was Dr Margaret Murray, my predecessor in charge of the Flinders Petrie Collection of Ancient Egyptian Antiquities, whose 100th birthday we look forward to celebrating this year, who encouraged me to re-study as many as possible of the antiquities found at Hierakonpolis; for she holds that the original publication was, as is not surprising, inadequate by modern standards. We have in the Petrie Collection two pieces of large yellow limestone macehead (UCI4898 and 14898A). They have hitherto been considered to belong to the same macehead, being published by Quibell and Green as the first of three great maceheads, of which no. 2 is in Cairo and no. 3 in the Ashmolean at Oxford. It is not surprising that our two fragments should have been thought to have come from the same mace, for the subject of the relief decoration on each is the conquest of the Pigtail people, and both are of yellow limestone. But I am indebted to my artist, Mr W. Masiewicz, who drew FIGS. 1 and 2, for drawing my attention to points indicating that they are not from the same macehead.

The 5th century CE was a period of intense theological controversy concerning the relationship between the human and divine in Christ. This dispute led to the permanent separation of the Egyptian Coptic church from Imperial Orthodoxy. The events of the 5th century, previously confined to academic scholarship, have recently become the subject of popularizing works like Agora (2009), The Jesus Wars (2010), and 428 AD (2009). The Arabic novel Azazeel (2009), written by the Egyptian Islamic scholar Youseff Ziedan, is a significant addition to these other works. Like The Da Vinci Code in its use of “actual” historical evidence, Azazeel purports to be a compilation of newly discovered Syriac scrolls written by the Coptic monk Hypa, which detail his spiritual trials between 411 and 437 CE. The novel sparked great controversy in Egypt among Coptic Christians for creating a misleading picture of important figures and events in their early history. Copts felt that a Muslim scholar was appropriating the voice of a Coptic monk without clearly signalling it was a work of fiction in order to produce a false account of Coptic origins. Though published before the Arab Spring, it soon became further evidence of the oppressive intentions of the Muslim majority against a Coptic minority in Egypt. Azazeel is different from other similar works in English because the events of the 5th century are still part of the living identity of Copts.

The Island of Bali, by Miguel Covarrubias, has remained one of the definitive treatments of the subject since its original publication in 1937. The book’s facility with words is matched by elegance of drawing. The book was also composed in a colonial context, written by a Mexican who was part of a Euro-American group of cosmopolitan intellectuals and artists. Miguel Covarrubias has been attacked as an orientalist, and praised as a trans-Pacific visionary. His encounter with Bali was especially an encounter with Balinese art, especially the new form of modernism emerging in the 1930s. Covarrubias’s interests in magic coincided with Balinese preoccupations with spiritual forces, something he pursued with his study of Balinese texts. For Covarrubias, art was a vehicle for achieving liberation. Despite heavy outside editorial intervention, Island of Bali advances a global view of connec-tions between societies through art.

The article discusses the debatable issues of legal psychology related to its subject. The problem of integration of legal and psychological knowledge as the basis of the subject area of research in legal psychology is studied. The solution of the problem of integration, in the author's opinion, is seen in the comprehension of the differentiation and interdisciplinary synthesis of knowledge about a man, prompting to explore and disclose in the mass of special descriptions of certain psychic phenomena that have developed in different psychological disciplines, that special that can be attributed to the discoveries of legal psychology. It is concluded that the mechanism of integration of legal and psychological knowledge consists in the search for patterns between legal and psychological phenomena. In this regard, it is proposed to consider the subject of legal psychology as the patterns that arise between legal and psychological phenomena, as well as the psychological mechanisms of the formation of new phenomena in the sphere of relations governed by law.

Mountain Kopaonik in the central part of Serbia (Yugoslavia), with a number of specificities has drawn the attention of research workers of various protesstons for a long time. Kopaonik has become a centre of new phenomena, processes, elements and factors. Many of them may should become the subject of modern scientific research, because it seems that field practice is far ahead from the adequate scientifically justified and confirmed solutions. Special problems are preserva.tion, protection and development of nature on mountain Kopaonik. This is of an importance for a number of activities on the mountain, for the present and future. It seems that the protection of Kopaonik will give best results if it is based on the principles of conception of active protection of nature, which has more followers, because it is theoretically and practically porposeful, scientIfically reasonable, in many cases literally confirmed and universal.

Pharaonic statues strongly appeal to modern aesthetic sensibilities. In ancient times, they were a vitally important physical medium that enabled the eternal participation of gods, kings, and non-royal individuals in rituals. This chapter considers the reception of Egyptian statue forms from antiquity to the modern world, through processes of acquisition, excavation, and display. Major Egyptological publications and interpretations of preserved sculptures are reviewed, with a focus on typologies and statues as the subject of rituals. An overview is given of materials and the importance of the role of the craftsman in creating a statue. The forms and functions of divine, royal, and non-royal statues are addressed in turn. A variety of texts describe the ritual function of statues, not least inscriptions on sculptures themselves; these are an important indication of the role of statues in context.

The history of the phenomenological understanding of subjectivity can be understood, negatively, as the history of a progressive turning away from a metaphysical conception of the human subject. It is, positively, also the history of a continuous broadening of the scope of subjectivity. The subject becomes less metaphysical when one considers its incarnation and bodily instincts, its personal characteristics and habitual styles of behavior, its depending on other subjects, its social and ethical life, its immersion in the world and in the history of humanity, its birth and death, and so on. Welcoming new phenomena, and, correlatively, opening new possibilities for subjective life, also creates new concerns. First, what sort of a phenomenological subject is involved in these diverse phenomena? Second, what sort of phenomena require an explicit consideration of subjectivity, and what sort of phenomena can do without it?

In view of the emerging behaviors facilitated by digital innovations, this article proposes an insight of the development of identity in the virtual paradigm. The task is to inscribe the selfie phenomenon in an exploratory manner within a pertinent theoretical framework that allows apprehending its aspects in terms of value and relationships. Using a qualitative ethnomethodology (Semantic Analysis Based on Images), it’s sought to locate certain narrative of the body in a context of interdisciplinary exchange in relation to a hypothetical category; namely the Selfer. Compiled sources derived from psychoanalysis, psychology, sociology, cybernetics etc. offer to inscribe these new phenomena into theories of mediation and the Subject. The ethnomethodology employed here considers selfie-narrative as a deployment of the body image. The interest lies in understanding motivations and consequences as individuals and societies through discursive consciousness. A group of three components were derived from the collected data: Self, The Ideal Virtual Collective Self (IVCS) and the Symptom. The results are presented as a narrative analysis of the participants’ discourse. This study considers selfies as trans-aesthetic objects with notable elicitation of self-impressions, based on a critical analysis of the participants’ testimonies. The findings of this study are relevant in a social context in terms of exploring the effect of selfies on mental health, psycho-dynamics and semiology.

The article moves the issue of labor costs, their structure and impact on the company's operations based on Polish enterprises. The issue of labor costs has existed since time immemorial, because human work is inevitably connected with the development of civilization. The problem of rewarding therefore existed during the construction of the first pyramids, the first mass production of cars in the Henry Ford factory and today. A common feature of past and present times is the fact that the aim is to reduce the labor costs as much as possible while maintaining unchanged quality and productivity at work. The author draws attention to the complexity of the category of labor costs in modern enterprises and the difficulty in their optimization. On the basis of the analysis of the literature on the subject and legal acts, fundamental assumptions and components of labor costs were characterized. During the analysis, the conclusion was drawn that the need to reduce labor costs contributes to the emergence of new phenomena, including employee outsourcing, which may be the basis for further research into this category of costs.
