Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the most important factors that affect the capital structure of commercial banks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Design/methodology/approach This study uses annual data of 11 Saudi commercial, national banks listed on the tadawul Saudi stock exchange for the period 2010–2017. Data was collected from the banks financial statements, tadawul annual publications and Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority. By constructing a balanced panel, this study uses pooled ordinary least squares regression along with fixed effects and random effects to examine the relationship between the bank’s book leverage as the dependent variable and bank-specific explanatory variables that include profitability, tangibility, earnings volatility, growth opportunities and bank size, while controlling for macroeconomic conditions. Findings The findings of this study suggest that banks in Saudi Arabia are highly leveraged, endorsing the fact that the nature of banks’ business is different from non-banking firms. Earnings volatility, growth and bank size show positive and significant relations with book leverage. Profitability and tangibility are negatively related to the book leverage. Empirically, the explanatory variables profitability, earnings volatility, tangibility, growth and bank size have material effects on the capital structure decisions of Saudi commercial banks. In summary, the determinants of capital structure for Saudi banks are the same as those of non-financial firms but are distinctive in nature. Research limitations/implications An extensive study on all the banks operating in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is suggested. Practical implications The findings have practical implications for bank managers, which will help them to identify the bank-specific factors affecting the capital structure and choose the values enhancing optimal capital structure. The results of this study can assist regulatory agencies to formulate an effective regulatory framework. Moreover, the findings lay a foundation for the development of financial sector under the umbrella of the Vision 2030 program in the Kingdom. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to explore the factors affecting the capital structure choices of commercial banks operating in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the findings of the study would prove useful in detailed studies of capital structure in the GCC countries as well.

The sample of this research is mining companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2017-2020 using purposive sampling. This study shows that capital structure has no significant effect on earnings quality, liquidity has no significant effect on earnings quality, profitability has no significant effect on earnings quality and firm age has no significant effect on earnings quality. The implications of this research are related to earnings quality. Investors and other users of financial statement information, need to consider the liquidity factor because this factor has a significant impact on the quality of earnings in the company. This study purposed to examine the effect of Corporate tax rate and Non debt tax shield on their Capital Structure according to Trade Off Theory on manufacturing companiessubsector metal and allied product that listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange for period 2016-2019. The study was conducted uing quantitative methods with an associative approach.  The study population numbered 16 companies and 6 companies were sampled using purposive sampling.  The study was conducted at manufacturing companies subsector metal and allied product that listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange for period 2016-2019.  Classic assumption test using the test for normality, multicollinearity, autocorrelation, and heteroscedasticity.  The regression analysis used is multiple linear regression analysis.  Data was collected with the Financial Statement 2016-2019 and analyzed with IBM SPSS version 25. The results of this study indicate that the use of high debt to obtain a low corporate tax rate can cause a high risk for the company to go bankrupt, so the company prefers to use depreciation costs to obtain tax savings.  If the depreciation cost of the company is high, the company can also reduce the use of debt.  This shows that the higher the capital structure, the lower the corporate tax rate obtained by the company and the higher the NDTS, the lower the capital structure.  In this study, there are still many limitations and shortcomings namely the influence of the independent variable on the dependent variable can only explain by 63,2%.

This dissertation comprises three distinct chapters. The first chapter examines whether accounting quality improves for firms voluntarily adopting IFRS by using a single country setting of Swiss firms. The Swiss setting enables isolating the effect of the change from accounting standards from changes in reporting enforcement. I find that voluntary adopters exhibit significant improvement in accounting quality metrics in the post-adoption period. Classifying the adopters in non-serious or serious adopters based on their actual reporting changes around the adoption, I find that the non-serious adopters do not face accounting quality improvements in the post-adoption period. Overall, the evidence points towards the explanation that accounting quality is mainly shaped by reporting incentives. The second chapter examines the new Expected Credit Loss (ECL) model’s impact on the predictability of loan loss provisions (LLP) and potential market discipline consequences. I examine whether the arguably less objective LLP under IFRS 9 obscure market participants’ ability to monitor the banks’ risk-taking incentives. The empirical findings suggest a decrease in the association between loan loss provisions and the incurred loss model determinants in the post-IFRS 9 period, i.e., LLP are based less on objective determinants after IFRS adoption. Furthermore, I find a decrease in the sensitivity of leverage to changes in risk in the post-adoption period of IFRS 9, indicating an attenuated market discipline over banks’ risk-taking. In contrast, I find no changes in the determinants of LLP and market discipline for the benchmark sample of U.S. banks, which were not subject to similar accounting changes during the sample period. The third chapter examines whether banks change the accounting designation of derivatives after ASU 2017-12. I investigate the impact of the new standard on earnings volatility within different groups of derivative users. Using detailed quarterly data on financial derivatives for bank holdings, I find that the level of earnings volatility and the ASU 2017-12 influence the banks’ decisions to use hedge accounting. In assessing the impact within groups of derivative users, I find evidence that banks that designate derivatives for hedge accounting purposes exhibit a lower level of earnings volatility around the adoption of ASU 2017-12 as opposed to banks that elect not to apply hedge accounting. I also find that banks that elect to use hedge accounting for the first time after adopting the standard update exhibit decreased earnings volatility. Overall, the findings confirm the FASB’s initial intention of introducing the accounting standard’s update.
