Gender identity is a personal experience of own gender. It can be related to the sex assigned at birth or it may be completely different. Analysis presents the case of a 30-year-old transsexual man. The research was carried out at the end of 2019 using an interview questionnaire and a diagnostic survey with the form of an open, categorized, individual interview technique. The research problem was the question of the relationship between gender identity and social life, and to what extent transsexual persons come into contact with discrimination in social life. Examples and significance of the transsexual man’s experiences in a social context are presented: safety and relationships, difficulties in the school environment (including preparing teachers to contact a transsexual student), health care, professional work. It has been shown that the man does not experience all these forms of the discrimination described in the literature in the context of transsexual people, except for misunderstandings and lack of knowledge in the environment.

Abstract Research background: One of the main ways companies gain and maintain a competitive advantage in many markets is to introduce product innovations. The degree of their acceptance by consumers is determined by many factors, among which the level of consumer innovativeness is of great importance. The paper presents the results of a study on consumer innovativeness of the adult inhabitants of the Poznań agglomeration. Purpose: The main purpose of the study was to recognize the relationship between consumer innovativeness and consumer’s personal characteristics and to advance knowledge regarding consumer innovativeness. Research methodology: The research was carried out using the direct interview technique with the use of an interview questionnaire, on a sample of 795 adult inhabitants of the Poznań agglomeration. Results: The results show that there is a directly proportional relationship between consumer innovativeness and education or material status and an inversely proportional relationship between consumer innovativeness and age in the pro-innovative dimension. The results indicate that there are statistically significant differences in consumer innovativeness between groups based on respondents’ personal characteristics – gender, age, level of education and material situation. The results however are ambiguous. Novelty: The novelty of the study is based on the verification of the relations between consumer innovativeness and their selected personal characteristics, with the example of Poland.

Affect control theory shows how cultural meanings for identities and behaviors are used to form impressions of events and guide social action. The theory’s impression formation equations are the engine of its predictions about events and the deflection they generate (i.e., how much they violate, versus conform to, cultural prescriptions). In this research, I examine the relationship between affective (deflection) and cognitive responses to events, with a focus on judgments of event likelihood. I present a series of analyses that show that event likelihood judgments are impacted by events’ perceived normativity, commonality in social life, and our personal experience with events like them and by the appearance likelihood of the actors, combinations of actors, and behaviors they involve and that likelihood ratings and deflection most often diverge for institutionally vague events. I additionally show that deflection computed using Heise’s 2014 impression-change equations strongly predicts event likelihood.

THE PANOPTIC EQUIPPED AND OPERATING SCHOOL   ABSTRACT Introduction:  We discussed the ideological discourse manifested in the school environment, mainly those detected on official documents, such as the minutes. Research problem: How do school ideological discourse and surveillance mechanisms constitute and justify the identity of school individuals? Purpose: Review the relationship between control, and school context, supported by Althusserian and Foucaultian theory framework, aims at arousing the thoughtful teacher theme in their everyday life. Methodology:  Qualitative research which analyses bibliographic and documental perspective, underpinned by authors such as Althuser (1980) and Foucault (1987), among others. Consequently, we will examine the minutes written in the period from 2015 to 2017, about students at a given school. Results: In the analysis, it was emphasized the ideological discourse as part of the school individual, and it had become noticeable on the documents as a regulatory instrument in the educational field. Discussion:  The lack of critical thinking about professional contexts, together with no theoretical support for professional development, may cause a transformation in the environment they work, it has possibly conditioned the educator as the protagonist when constituting their own identity as well as other individual’s liberator. Conclusion:  Reviewing those “Student’s Minutes” from the given school, regarding the events that occurred at school routine, according to teachers, students are considered violent in consonance with the worldview of each author.   Keywords: School. Speech. Disciple. Ideology. Panopticon.

This narrative aims to explore the meaning and lived experiences of marriage that a unique immigrant population—“foreign brides” in Taiwan—possesses. This convergence narrative illustrates the dynamics and complexity of mail-order marriage and women's perseverance in a cross-cultural context. The relationship between marriage, race, and migration is analyzed. This narrative is comprised of and intertwined by two story lines. One is the story of two “foreign brides” in Taiwan. The other is my story about my cross-cultural relationship. All the dialogues are generated by 25 interviews of “foreign brides” in Taiwan and my personal experience.

Abstract Background The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities [1] highlights the need to create proper socioeconomic and political conditions for persons with disabilities, with a special focus on their immediate living conditions. According to the Convention, these conditions should be built to ensure that persons with disabilities have the potential to enjoy a high quality of life (QoL), and this principle is reflected in the notion of livable areas. The crucial aspect of this framework is the relationship between the individual QoL and the environment, broadly understood as the socioeconomic as well as the technical conditions in which persons with disabilities function. Methods The basic research problem was to assess the relationship between individual QoL for the population with disabilities as a dependent variable and livability indicators as independent variables, controlling for individual characteristics. The study used a dataset from the EU-SILC (European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions) survey carried out in 2015 in Poland. The research concept involved several steps. First, we created a variable measuring the QoL for the entire population with disabilities. To measure the multidimensional QoL, we used Sen’s capability approach as a general concept, which was operationalized by the MIMIC (multiple indicators multiple causes) model. In the second step, we identified the livability indicators available in the official statistics, and merged them with survey data. Finally, in the last step, we ran the regression analysis. We also checked the data for the nested structure. Results We confirmed that the general environmental conditions, focused on creating livable areas, played a significant role in shaping the QoL of persons with disabilities; i.e., we found that the higher the level of the local Human Development Index, the higher the quality of life of the individuals living in this area. This relationship held even after controlling for the demographic characteristics of the respondents. Moreover, we found that in addition to the general environmental conditions, the conditions created especially for persons with disabilities (i.e., services for this group and support for their living conditions) affected the QoL of these individuals. Conclusions The results illustrate the need to strengthen policies aimed at promoting the QoL of persons with disabilities by creating access to community assets and services that can contribute to improving the life chances of this population.

AbstractAlthough Max Weber does not specifically analyze the topic of esteem, his investigation of the Protestant ethic offers interesting insights into it. The change in mentality it engendered essentially contributed to enhancing the meaning and importance of esteem in modern society. In his analysis, Weber ascertains that esteem was fundamental to being accepted and integrated into the social life of congregations. Nevertheless, he also highlights that esteem was supported by a form of self-esteem which was not simply derived from a good social reputation, but also achieved through a deep and continual self-analysis as well as a strict discipline in the ethical conduct of life. The present analysis reconstructs the different aspects of the relationship between social and self-esteem and analyzes the consequences of that relationship by focusing on the exemplary case of the politician’s personality and ethic.

In this piece, we take up haunting as a spatial method to consider what geography can learn from ghosts. Following Avery Gordon’s theorizations of haunting as a sociological method, a consideration of the spectral offers a means of reckoning with the shadows of social life that are not always readily apparent. Drawing upon art installations in Brooklyn, NY, White Shoes (2012–2016), and Oakland, CA, House/Full of BlackWomen (2015–present), we find that in both installations, Black women artists perform hauntings, threading geographies of race, sex, and speculation across past and present. We observe how these installations operate through spectacle, embodiment, and temporal disjuncture, illuminating how Black life and labor have been central to the construction of property and urban space in the United States. In what follows, we explore the following questions: what does haunting reveal about the relationship between property, personhood, and the urban in a time of racial banishment? And the second, how might we think of haunting as a mode of refusing displacement, banishment, and archival erasure as a way of imagining “livable” urban futures in which Black life is neither static nor obsolete?

As many research studies show, a large portion of clinicians in the mental field hold pejorative attitudes toward those with borderline personality disorder. Oftentimes, these attitudes become manifest through the use of stigmatizing language to describe client behavior, such as “manipulative” and “attention seeking.” In this article, combining personal experience with research, I explore how stigmatizing language and attitudes affect the relationship between client and clinician and how such language impacts recovery. I offer for consideration solutions that might be more conducive to recovery and lead to a better working relationship between client and clinician.

AbstractResilience is an individual’s capacity to recover, adapt, and keep mental balance and normal functioning when exposed to significant adversity. This competence plays an important role in one’s life because it increases the probability of achieving success in various spheres of life. Schools can foster students’ resilience by providing a positive school environment and a sufficient number of protective factors, but it is the subjective interpretation of conditions and experiences rather than the exposure to them that is significant. The main objective of this research was to study to what extent school satisfaction, i.e. subjective interpretation of the school climate, influenced the level of students’ resilience. Not all our findings are compatible with the results of other studies. Despite the limits of our research, its results can serve as a basis for further work as not much has been done in the field of resilience research in Slovakia.
