The paper features the changes that take place in the process of adaptation of first-year students to the educational environment of the medical university during the first year of study. The methods research included diagnostic tools and methods of data processing, e.g. T.D. Dubowitzka and A. V. Krylova's technique "Adaptation of students at the university", questionnaire "Student Anxiety" in J. Taylor’s modification, φ-Fisher conversion multifunctional criterion and t-Student parametric criterion for dependent samples. A statistical analysis made it possible to make certain conclusions about the ambiguous nature of the dynamics of adaptation of freshmen to the educational environment of the medical university. The identified reliable differences in the indicators of adaptation to learning activity make significant additions to the scientific perception on the leading role of the given adaptation type, which has an open, pronounced, but fleeting positive character. The absence of significant differences in anxiety rates at the beginning and end of the school year indicates a fairly stable emotional background, with a predominance of average and elevated levels. On the other hand, certain aspects in the educational environment of the university cause persistent negative experience. The emotional state of the respondents by the end of the first year revealed a new aspect of anxiety, i. e. interpersonal relationships within the grouр. The authors believe this is due to the change of orientation in the adaptation process. The change reflects the formation of a community of freshmen with actively flowing processes of status differentiation and the transformation of a diffuse group into a prosocial association. This transformation suggests a different kind of adaptation dynamics to student grouр. This longer and more latent kind of adaptation is determined by intragroup processes.

Pedagogical design of the educational process is the main lever of improvement of specialist`s training in higher education. Special attention in this aspect should be paid to the curriculum of specialty, which defines the main vectors of the educational trajectory for education applicants, and provides opportunities for the implementation of the educational program`s competency-building tasks. The main differences between the curriculum of masters of medicine and the previous version - curriculum of specialists training in “General Medicine” are analyzed in the article. The main features of the structure of curricula for the physicians’ training in Poland are based on the example of the Warsaw Medical University and Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University. On the basis of comparison and analysis conducted, the following changes in the design of masters of medicine curriculum in higher educational institutions (HEI) of Ukraine are predicted in accordance with the main trends in the European Higher Education Area. Increase of the classroom learning load in the general structure of credits up to 55% due to its growth at 2-5 courses is possible with the further design of curricula for physicians’ training. An increase in the number of class hours of production practice in the curriculum for the 4th year of studying – up to 82, for the 5th year – up to 102 hours without making changes in the number of credits is expedient. The volume of the lecture load is optimal to allocate from the largest one on the 1st year to the smallest – on 4th-5th years, with the simultaneous reduction of its quota in the structure of classroom hours. Taking into account the introduction of a united state qualification exam (USQE), increase in the number of credits for natural sciences up to 30% and simultaneous reduction in the number of credits for humanities (up to 2-3%) and to some degree – credits for professionally oriented disciplines (to 65-67%) can provide additional benefits to the design of curricula. The requirements of the higher education standard should be taken into account for adapting to the training of first-year students and improving of their training for both stages of external evaluation in the form of USQE, provided that a student-centered environment with better conditions is created.

The article deals with the problem of socio-psychological adaptation of freshmen students to training activities using fitness equipment. It was clarified that the concept of social and psychological adaptation can be considered as a process of adaptation of freshmen students to the new conditions of teaching and training activities in  the institution of higher pedagogical education, entering the cultural and educational environment, mastering its norms, developing a model of behavior and training activities. It is determined that socio-psychological adaptation of first-year students at the initial stages of educational activity caused by a number of regular features and is characterized by a large volume of material, high level of self-dependence and responsibility. The greatest difficulties are in changing the social position of first-year students during the transition from the school community, methods and means of training activities, relationships and stereotypes of their behavior. It is proved that one of the most effective organizational mechanisms for ensuring successful adaptation of students for training activities using fitness means is social and psychological adaptation, which unites the physical education teachers’ efforts. The main forms of training activities should be trainings, round tables, attracting students to active training and competitive activities while studying at a higher educational institution.

According to the World Health Organization, 5.4 million people die each year from smoking. The problem of smoking has become prevalent among young people, including high school students and university students, including medical students. The purpose of the work is to analyze the state of smoking among the medical workers of Ukraine, students of medical universities and attitudes to smoking of students of the 1st course of National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya based on the results of a sociological survey of 2017, to identify measures to reduce tobacco use. In 2017, a sociological survey of doctors and first-year students of the National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya was done. It has been established that the problem of tobacco smoking is already relevant from the 1st year of study at a medical university: among Ukrainian 1st year students more than one fifth of the total number of smokers among 1st year foreign students the habit of tobacco smoking is formed in more than 38% of first-year students. The overwhelming number of medical students began to use tobacco at the age of 16-17 years. For more than 30% of Ukrainian respondents and almost 70% of foreigners, the main factor that prompted tobacco smoking was the influence of a company of friends, but more than 60% of respondents consider stress to be the main reason for starting smoking. Following the example of parents, 37% of Ukrainian and 22% of foreign students began to smoke. Almost all medical students are aware of the dangers of smoking. At the moment, 13% of Ukrainian and 7% of foreign students believe that the habit of tobacco reduces respect for them and the school. The majority of Ukrainian students (70%) and 43.75% of foreign students who smoke reported that they have a goal to get rid of their bad habit in the near future. According to the results of a sociological survey, anti-tobacco measures were proposed. At the moment, 13% of Ukrainian and 7% of foreign students believe that the habit of tobacco reduces respect for them in school. The majority of Ukrainian students (70%) and 43.75% of foreign students, smoke, noticed, with the aim to get rid of the bad habit in the near future. Thus, smoking is common among first-year medical students; anti-tobacco activities should be part of a preventive comprehensive program and form the basis of a healthy lifestyle.

Background. The article presents the results of the study of socio-psychological adaptation in Russian and foreign first-year students. It is known that the constructive interaction of foreign students with the educational and professional environment, as well as their comfortable living on the territory of the Russian Federation is impossible without tolerant behavior. Aim. The paper aims to establish the features of communicative tolerance and socio-psychological adaptability of Russian and foreign students (both male and female). Materials and methods. 42 first-year students of the CIS countries and 40 Russian first-year students (the control group) were examined. The average age of students was 19.95 years. The study was based on the following methods: V.V. Boyko general communicative tolerance questionnaire, the Rogers and Dymond technique of measuring socio-psychological adaptation (modified by A. Osnitsky), the Eysenck personality questionnaire (edited by A. Rukavishnikov and L. Sosnina). Data processing was performed with the help of the Student's t-test and Pearson correlation analysis using the SPSS 22.0 statistical program package. Results. Multiple differences were found between the indicators of general communicative tolerance and socio-psychological adaptability in foreign and Russian students. Female students showed only one difference according to the scale of socio-psychological adaptation. Their social desirability is more pronounced, which can be interpreted as a higher level of communicative tolerance. There are direct and inverse correlations between communicative tolerance and socio-psychological adaptability in foreign and Russian students. Russian students have higher values of socio-psychological adaptability than foreign students. Conclusion. The features of communicative tolerance and socio-psychological adaptability of Russian and foreign students during their adaptation to the new educational and cultural environment of St. Petersburg were established.

The article deals with the issue of the language adaptation of foreign students who have left the preparatory faculty and begun their studies in Russian in the first year of the main faculty of the Russian University. The main problem is the lack of knowledge of Russian by foreign students to understand and take notes at lectures, to actively participate in seminars. The article identifies and discusses the main difficulties faced by foreigners while studying in Russia and the reasons of their appearance, analyzes the conditions of training of foreign students at the preparatory faculty and the real results of this training, the main of which is the discrepancy between what foreign students know and are capable of and what they need to know and be able to, becoming the first-year students of a Russian University. Most first-year foreign students find it difficult to study at the same level with Russian students, so they need the support and understanding of not only teachers of Russian as a foreign language, but also teachers of other subjects. It is noted that teachers who don’t specialize in teaching Russian as a foreign language can’t and don’t want to adequately assess the level of knowledge of a foreign student and help them if needed. The article proposes a possible solution to this problem.
