The Public Transportation Facilities and Equipment Management System (PTMS) is a capital programming tool developed for NJ TRANSIT. It was one of six management systems formerly mandated by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) to manage transportation infrastructure. PTMS organizes pertinent information of physical assets (condition, performance, financial, functional, and descriptive) to assist decision makers; select cost-effective programs and projects; improve efficiency, serviceability, and safety of the infrastructure of NJ TRANSIT; and protect prior federal investments. Implementation of PTMS is now a voluntary program under the ISTEA. However, NJ TRANSIT remains committed to completion of the New Jersey PTMS. A team approach was used (design working group) to identify the specifications for the PTMS. The team participated in all phases of project development and implementation. The system is being tested with the introduction of the fiscal year 1998 capital program cycle. A problem analysis relating to the design and development of the New Jersey PTMS is presented. It is designed to show key issues, accomplishments compared with original objectives, output from the system, and lessons learned.

The term “urban mass transit” generally refers to scheduled intra-city service on a fixed route in shared vehicles. Public transportation is an important contributing factor to urban sustainability. Effective transportation networks that incorporate public transit livable by easing commute and transportation needs and increasing accessibility. To assess public transportation accessibility in metropolitan networks, two indices are used: the supply level of urban public transportation facilities resource and the public transportation-private automobile traveling time ratio. As the research in the Wolaita sodo town region and the assessment system, an evaluation technique for urban public transportation facility resource supply is developed based on accessibility. Accessibility is a representative indicator for evaluating the supply of bus system. Traditional studies have evaluated the accessibility from different aspects. Considering the interaction among land use, bus timetable arrangement and individual factors, a more holistic accessibility measurement is proposed to combine static and dynamic characteristics from multisource traffic data. The objective is to highlight the main lessons learned and identify knowledge gaps to guide the design and evaluation of future transport investments. Moreover, studies looking at ways to improve the operational efficiency of systems and those seeking to promote behavioral changes in transport users offer great potential to generate learning that is useful for the public and private actors involved.

A Public Transportation Facilities and Equipment Management System (PTMS), as proposed in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), is a tool to assist in the management and utilization of transit facilities and equipment so as to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources. A framework for the application of PTMS elements in the public transit capital improvement planning process is proposed. By using a PTMS as a part of the capital planning process, broad concepts such as needs fulfillment and performance improvement may be embodied in a systematic process to program transit bus capital investments. With data from the Federal Transit Administration’s National Transit Database (NTD), the practical applicability of this framework is investigated in the context of the capital planning process employed by the regional transit authorities and the state transportation agency in Massachusetts. Vehicle replacement needs for a Massachusetts regional transit authority are estimated for a 5-year planning window using the NTD data in conjunction with predictive condition models. These models, developed by Purdue University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, use easily quantifiable and objective measures such as age and mileage to predict the future condition of a vehicle. NTD data are also used to identify opportunities for performance-based capital incentives among the Massachusetts regional transit authorities.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has undertaken an effort to design and implement an asset management system for overseeing the state’s diverse and complex transportation system. The department has built an appropriate organizational and business foundation for the effective use of sound, integrated databases and technical modeling tools. For more than a decade, well before asset management attracted interest from the transportation community, NYSDOT has advanced this concept on four fronts: developing well-defined organizational roles within a highly decentralized department; designing and implementing a formal and disciplined core business procedure (the program update process) to cover both program development and performance monitoring; developing key transportation management systems (pavement, bridge, congestion and mobility, and public transportation), even without a federal mandate; and designing and implementing a state-of-the-art automated program and project management system that serves, in part, to integrate the department’s use of the individual management systems and maintains all essential data for developing and managing the program. New York’s experience strongly suggests that despite the difficulty and time required to carry out the key processes, these four elements represent the heart of an asset management system. When identifying and developing additional technical elements, state departments of transportation should heed the importance of building and maintaining an effective organizational and business foundation.

Archnet 2.0 is a new front end website and back end cataloging tool and asset management system for Archnet (http://archnet.org), the largest openly accessible online architectural library focusing on the Muslim world. The site, a partnership between the Massachusetts Institute for Technology and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), contains articles and publications, images, maps and drawings, video, archival material, course syllabi, and site records relating to architecture in the Islamic world. By 2012, when the Aga Khan Documentation Center (AKDC) at MIT, part of the MIT Libraries, took over the digital library, the site has become dated and was no longer meeting the needs of its users. A software development firm was hired to build new front and back ends for the site. This paper explores the development of the new back end cataloging and asset management tool, including the reasoning behind building a new tool from scratch; considerations during development such as database structure, fields, and migration; highlights of features; and lessons learned from the process.

Enterprise asset management (EAM) systems are used by asset owners and/or operators to manage the maintenance of their physical assets. These assets, including equipment, facilities, vehicles, and infrastructure, need maintenance to sustain their operations. An EAM system provides the means to have less unplanned downtime and extended asset longevity, which offers clear business benefits that improve the profit and loss statement and balance sheet. Particularly for capital-intensive industries, like drilling and exploration, the failure of on-time delivery of critical equipment or processes is disruptive and costs nonproductive time and customer satisfaction. Organizations understand these issues and employ an appropriate asset management system to engineer their asset maintenance and management. An EAM system is needed to manage the people, assets/equipment, and processes. EAMs are used to plan, optimize, execute, and track the needed maintenance activities with associated priorities, skills, materials, tools, and information. Similarly, nondestructive testing (NDT) is used as a tool for integrity assessment of assets in drilling and exploration. The main advantage of using NDT is that the item’s intended use or serviceability is not affected. The selection of a specific technique should be based on knowledge and skills that include design, material processing, and material evaluation. Validating the purpose of this paper, we emphasize the importance of optimizing the asset utilization and serviceability to enhance overall efficiency by integrating EAM software that manages assets, the operation management system (OMS) controlling the processes, and asset inspection management systems (AIMSs).

Ratu harbor beach is one of the mainstay tourist sites for the Regional Government of Sukabumi Regency in bringing PAD, besides public transportation facilities and terminals have a major role in supporting the queen port as a tourist attraction so that tourists are comfortable and facilitated in accessing through public transportation. The condition of the Pelabuhan Ratu Terminal, Sukabumi Regency is currently very poor, poorly maintained, and many supporting facilities are damaged and inadequate. This study aims to identify problems and formulate the type B terminal arrangement in Sukabumi Regency. The method used is descriptive qualitative in order to get a picture of the problems of the situation and conditions currently taking place or occurring in the present and the study of policies. Collecting data by field surveys, literature studies and interviews. The results in this study get a terminal B type terminal design concept Sukabumi Regency according to current and future needs.
