In the article analyzed the social and political consequences of pandemic of coronavirus for the Russian Orthodox Church in the context of the reaction of different European churches on the quarantine rules and critics towards the church inside Russia. The author used the structural-functional and institutional approaches for the evaluation of the activity of the Russian Orthodox Church, was analyzed the sources of mass-media and the public claims of the clergy. In the article was made a conclusion that Orthodox Church expressed itself during the struggle with coronavirus as national civic institute where could be represented various even polar views. Also the parish activity leads to the formation of the democratic society affiliated with the Church and the role of that phenomenon have to be explored in a future. The coronacrisis makes open the inner potential of the civic activity and different forms of the social service in Russian Church. In the same time pandemic provoked the development of the volunteer activity in the around-church environment and also in the non-church circles among the young people and the generation of 40th age where the idea of the social responsibility for themselves and people around and the significance of the civil rights was one of the popular ideas till 2019. The conditions of the self-isolation also forced the clergy to struggle for their parishioners and once again renovate the role of the church in the society and in the cyber space.

The fall of the socialist system in the early 90's of the twentieth century. led to the return of the Orthodox Churches of Europe to the active social and political life of the post-Soviet countries. Therefore, the adoption in August 2000 by the Jubilee Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church of the social doctrine became a necessary stage in the development of Russian Orthodoxy, and at the same time marked the beginning of a new time of not only this Church, but the whole Ecumenical Orthodoxy. However, this serious doctrine did not cause any serious attention, except for one or two colloquiums organized by the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate. The wave of theological and non-fiction works on the hot topics raised in the Doctrine also did not happen to the experts.

The subject of the study is studying the interaction between the penitentiary system (MIS) and traditional confessions in the execution of sentences related to the isolation of the convict from society. The purpose of the study is to study the religious influence exerted by clergymen representing traditional confessions (the Russian Orthodox Church, etc.) as an integral part of the social impact, which, according to Art. 9 PEC of the RF refers to one of the main means of correcting convicts. The main results of the research, proceeding from the provisions of the penal enforcement legislation, reflect the directions for regulating the exercise of the right of convicts in penal institutions to freedom of conscience and freedom of religion associated with the establishment of restrictions on its implementation by convicts; inviting clergymen to the convicts, their communication and ensuring security in this communication; organization of religious ceremonies and ceremonies; development of the legal framework for the interaction of MIS and traditional confessions by concluding relevant agreements.

The foundations of the social concept are one of the most important normative acts issued by the Russian Orthodox Church. The unanimous adoption of this document by the Holy Council of Bishops of the Russian Church, which took place on August 13-16, 2000 in Moscow, was not only a local event, but a significant fact on the scale of the entire Orthodox Church worldwide. For the first time in history, one of the autocephalous Orthodox Churches decided to formulate an official position on current social, economic, economic and cultural issues, as well as define the Church-state relationship in the conditions of historical reality in which it found itself at the threshold of the third millennium. The promulgation of the Foundations of the Social Concept has become a powerful impulse for the renewal of spiritual life, greater involvement of the Orthodox clergy in social life, the development of institutional and non-institutional forms of mission and evangelization, and the multidimensional dialogue of Orthodoxy with the world of science, politics and economy. The aim of this publication is to familiarize the Polish reader with the content of chapters twelve and thirteen of the document, which relate to bioethical and ecological issues. It is worth noting that this is their first translation into Polish. The translator hopes that they will contribute to a better understanding of the Orthodox Church’s position on issues that are currently among the most discussed social topics.

The article deals with the interaction of the Russian Orthodox Church (hereinafter, the ROC) and the penitentiary system of Russia. The author addresses the problem of the social role of the ROC in penitentiary institutions. The purpose of the article is to analyse the effectiveness of Church social service in penitentiary institutions of modern Russia. The basis of the research methodology is the analysis of statistical information of the Federal penitentiary service and social projects of the ROC on the effectiveness of the Church penitentiary service. It is concluded that the activities of the ROC in the penal system has significant positive outcomes that are associated primarily with the problem of improving relations among specific population of penitentiary establishments, as well as re-socialisation of former prisoners and prevention of offenses, which is an important element in the fight against general crime rate in the country.

Introduction. The article analyzes the results of the sociological research undertaken by the authors in 2018 within the framework of the research project “Social Projects of the Russian Orthodox Church” in terms of comparing motivation, social technologies and social consequences of implementing Orthodox social projects in the capital and other regions of Russia in order to identify factors contributing to and hindering their successful implementation at the regional level. The purpose of the empirical research was to identify the social functions fulfilled in the process of developing and implementing social projects by organizations within the structure of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), as well as by lay organizations created and headed by parishioners of the Russian Orthodox Church. Materials and Methods. The study used qualitative methods of collecting and analyzing sociological data such as observation, in-depth interviews with people participating in social activities of the Orthodox projects and with the members of their target groups. The qualitative study used theoretical sampling and the method of selecting typical cases, which made it possible to describe and analyze social technologies and the consequences of the Orthodox social activities in different areas of impact on the society, including helping the poor and the socially deprived strata of the population, rehabilitation of the disabled, ‘pro-life’ movements, as well as educational activities. Results. In the process of research, based on the analysis of the survey data, the goals of the Orthodox social projects and their hierarchy have been identified, as well as the peculiarities of motivation of the activities of the participants of the Orthodox social projects studied and the specifics of the forms of organizing social assistance in Moscow, the Republic of Mordovia, and the Ivanovo Region. The social technologies of direct and indirect influence of the Orthodox social projects in terms of educational activities have been studied. The authors sought to assess the transformational consequences of implementation of the Orthodox social projects studied at the levels of the individual, social institutions, and groups. Discussion and Conclusion. The study has revealed that the Orthodox social initiatives help their participants master such skills as fundraising, interaction with the society, government bodies and commercial entities, thus becoming an important segment of civil society. The main difficulties the Orthodox social projects encounter have been revealed: poor systemic work and dependence on the personality of the leader, dependence on grants. The scientific results of the study can be used when developing strategies and implementing social policies with the participation of Orthodox non-profit organizations through a comprehensive analysis of methods and social technologies.

This article is devoted to the characteristic and analysis of the problem of spiritual and sociocultural ministry of the leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church in crucial periods of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Reflects the consolidating, mobilizing mission of the Church in the national liberation struggle during the Great Patriotic War. Against the background of anti-religious repression of the post-October period in this difficult period of national history, the Russian Orthodox Church, on behalf of its archpastors, appealed to the patriotic feelings of power and the population of the country, provided spiritual and material support. The article focuses on the study of aspects of the general situation and the social and cultural service of the monasteries - the most important centers of spiritual life and religious and cultural education - in the middle and second half of the twentieth century, which in the postwar period faced a political campaign to mass closure of the monasteries. The fate of the devotees and the lives of the Russian saints, who, in the face of opposition to the repressive regime, continued to serve, accomplished Christian exploits and made their invaluable contribution to the preservation and further development of the spiritual and cultural life of Russia, are described. Article material consists of two parts, the first of which is presented in this publication.

Introduction. The turn of the 1980s – 1990s in the history of our country is characterized by the liberalization of the social system, which changed, in particular, the relations between the state and the Orthodox Church. One of the crucial issues in this area is the consideration of state policy to involve the Russian Orthodox Church into joint partnership. It allows determining the place and role of the Orthodox confession in the life of post-Soviet Russia. The article analyzes the features of the historical development of the economic policy of regional authorities aimed at involving the local diocese into joint social partnership in 1990s – first decade of the 2000s. The purpose of the research is to reveal a comprehensive chronological framework of the historical aspects of economic policy carried out in relation to its involvement into social partnership. Materials and Methods. To achieve this goal, both unpublished archival documents and published sources were used. The main source for the article were the materials from the funds of the state historical archive of the Chuvash Republic and the state archive of modern history of the Chuvash Republic (documents of official records management of public authorities and religious organizations), which are first introduced into scientific use. The study is based on the principle of historicism, comparative-historical and descriptive methods, which revealed the content of the research. Results. According to the results of the study of economic policy of the Chuvash authorities to involve local Orthodox community into joint partnership in 1990s – first decade of the 2000s, the authors give a comprehensive description of the considered historical processes. In particular, two stages concerning the beginning of sate and church social partnership in the Chuvash Republic are proposed and described. The first phase is characterized by preconditioning (acknowledgement of the Russian Orthodox Church’s leadership in spiritual revival of the local population, economic support of the church revival, etc.) and the origin and growth of the social partnership model of state and church relations (the period of 1990s). The second stage (first decade of 2000s) is the time of approval and implementation of the social partnership relations model between the Chuvash authorities and Chuvash diocese. The main characteristic of the period are the agreements between the diocese and healthcare institutions, educational institutions, justice institution regarding the issues of spiritual and patriotic education, opposition to totalitarian sects, etc. Discussion and Conclusion. In general, the priority in social partnership in the Chuvash republic in the period of 1990s – first decade of 2000s was given (comparing to, for example, pre-Christian beliefs) to the Orthodoxy, which was determined mainly by its historic significance, its special role in the cultural life of the region. At the same time at the beginning of first decade of 2000s there are events (Chuvash diocese took part in the opening of the monument of the “Covering Mother”, the Russian Orthodox Church took part in discussions regarding the ban of pre-Christian beliefs publications), which proved the fact of considering the Russian Orthodox Church by the authorities not only from the position of social, but also from the point of political partnership.
