<p>This paper shows the qualitative study of the employment of websites to practice English listening skills of students. The samples in this survey were the students majoring in English, one of school education, Pontianak, Indonesia. The open-ended questionnaire and interview were used to compile the data. The study reported that the students held a positive attitude toward the use of the websites for practicing listening skills because of many advantages such as the websites offer unlimited opportunities to learn and practice their listening skill as if they are in the real situation with native speakers and these opportunities provided them more new English vocabularies. Moreover, it can facilitate them to create autonomous learning strategies. It was also found that it was so convenient when using the internet sites for practicing listening skills outside classroom and from book, anywhere and anytime. However, the students experienced a problem with the native speaker accent so they could not understand the conversation.</p>

The aim of the study was  to  analyze  and  describe  the  process of  improving students’ listening skill for eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Majene, West Sulawesi Province through  watching English movies. The subject of this research is XI Agama 2 Class that consisted of 16 students. The method used in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which the writer works  collaboratively with the English teacher. The results in this study indicate that there  was  improvement of the students’ skill listening. Most of the students gradually gained good scores at the end of the cycle. The data were collected from a questionnaire, observation note of performance, pre-test and post-test. The study was conducted with cycle model through the steps of planning, conducting, observation, and reflection. The results of this study show a significant relationship between students' learning by English movie with delay subtitle related to their listening skills as shown in their improvement of post- test and positive responses of students than  E nglish movie  with not delay. The questionnaire shows that more than 75% students felt easy to understand listening materials from native speakers. Consequently, it was suggested that teaching learning process using English movie with English subtitle is recommended  into  learning  process  to  improve students' listening skills in English language classroom. In conclusion, watching English movie can improve students listening skill.

This study aimed at presenting need analysis results related to listening skill problems encountered by the students of SMP N 5 Ngawen, Gunungkidul and the format of English audio media for teaching listening skills which was conducted between March till April 2018. There were 50 students, two practisioners, and two native speakers involved in this study.  The data were collected by using two kinds of instruments namely questionnaires and an interview guide. The results showed that: (1) the language ability of the students were relatively low although 92% of the students had learned English since they were in the kindergarten or elementary schools; (2) 58% students considered that listening was the most difficult skills among the three other skills (reading, writing, speaking); (3) the listening problems faced by the students were categorized into three aspects, namely: the content aspects, the environment aspects, and the learner aspects. The first aspect included vocabularies, sentences/expressions, pronunciation, the length of the texts, and the speed in reading the scripts. The second aspect is about the environment/atmosphere aspect included namely the quality of the audio programmes; facilities, and noise. The third was the learner aspects namely the sub-skills of listening comprehension. Moreover, there were some information related to the technical aspects namely the ideal duration of an audio program and the format of the English audio media. In fact, the results of the research could be used as a guidance in designing a model of English audio media for improving listening skills among the target students. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai permasalahan pembelajaran menyimak (listening) dan kebutuhan pembelajaran listening pada siswa SMPN 5 Ngawen, Gunungkidul. Penelitian dilakukan pada bulan Maret-April 2018 dengan metode pengumpulan data berupa kuesioner dan wawancara. Sampel diambil dengan teknik simple random sampling yang melibatkan 50 responden siswa. Selain siswa, penelitian ini melibatkan tiga praktisi pendidikan/guru dan dua native speakers. Hasil analisis kebutuhan menunjukkan bahwa: (1) kemampuan Bahasa Inggris siswa rendah meskipun 92% responden siswa telah belajar Bahasa Inggris sejak TK/SD;  (2) 58% siswa menganggap listening merupakan keterampilan bahasa tersulit dibanding reading, writing, dan speaking; dan (3) permasalahan dalam pembelajaran listening meliputi aspek materi, lingkungan/atmosfir, dan dari sisi pebelajar/learners. Aspek materi yang diungkap meliputi pemilihan tema, kosakata, kalimat/ujaran, pronunciation, panjang pendek input text, dan kecepatan berbicara. Aspek lingkungan/atmosfir meliputi kualitas audio, peralatan, dan noise/kegaduhan saat pemutaran media sedangkan dari sisi pebelajar meliputi sub-skills dalam listening comprehension yang belum dikuasai dan perlu dikuasai siswa. Selain itu, diperoleh juga informasi terkait hal teknis misalnya durasi audio dan format sajian media. Secara umum, hasil analisis kebutuhan ini dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai pedoman dalam menyusun rancangan model media audio pembelajaran listening untuk siswa SMP pada tahapan kedua dalam proses pengembangan desain instruksional, yaitu tahapan desain.

Listening plays a vital role in daily lives. Everyday people listen for different purposes such as entertainmnet, academic purposes or obtaining necessary information. It is essential for learning languages since they enable to acquire insights and information, and to achieve success in communicating with others. But many students fail to seize them because of some learning difficulties in listening class. Teachers should be aware of students’ learning difficulties. Understanding students’ learning difficulties may enable EFL teachers to help students develop effective learning strategies and ultimately improve their English listening abilities. This paper focuses on how teachers enhance their positive attitude; trainthem to be responsive by giving the suitable strategies that will enable them to develop their listening skills.

ملخص البحث: يعتبر الاتصال الشفوي (الكلام) الوسيلة الفاعلة في بلورة الفكرة الكامنة لدى الفرد، وإخراجها بصورة صوتية تمثل تلك الفكرة تمثيلاً واضحاً، وإيصالها إلى الطرف الآخر –المستمع-دون لبس أو غموض، ويرى الباحث أن الطلبة غير العرب عند التّحدث باللغة العربية يتعثرون على الرغم من تخصصهم في تعلُّمِها بوصفها لغة ثانية. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى معرفة أسباب إحجام الطلبة عن التحدث باللغة العربية، ومن ثَمَّ إبراز بعض الاستراتيجيات التي استخدمها الباحث في تعليم مهارة الاتصال الشفوي لطلبة بكالوريوس التربية، تخصص تعليم لغة عربية بوصفها لغة ثانية على مدى الخمس السنوات الماضية بالجامعة الإسلامية العالمية بماليزيا. توصلت الدراسة إلى أن تعليم وتعلم اللغة العربية خارج موطنها يعتريه كثير من العقبات تتمثل في البيئة المحيطة بالدارس، والمناهج والمقررات، والوسائل المعينة اللازمة، وينبغي أن يخصص وقت لممارسة الكلام باللغة العربية داخل الصفوف الدراسية، وإتاحة الفرصة لكل طالب أو طالبة في التعبير الشفوي، مع التشجيع الكامل من المعلم، ويتم تصحيح الخطأ بطريقة محفزة، وترصد لهم مكافآت ولو رمزية، تعزيزاً لدفعهم للكلام، وكسر حاجز الخوف والخجل، وإكسابهم الجسارة والجرأة والثقة، على أن يكون الوقت المخصص للكلام إلزاميا لجميع الطلبة دارسي اللغة العربية، ولكل المقررات المتعلقة باللغة.   الكلمات المفتاحية: السَّمع –  الاستماع – مواصفات -  الفروق –  الاستراتيجيات.   Abstract: This paper intends to discuss through descriptive analytical field study the student strategies in overcoming the problems of learning listening skills. Data was gathered from 184 students through the questionnaire of 25 items. The analysis revealed that the students used moderately the strategies according to the Oxford taxonomy. The most frequent strategies – in sequence – were compensatory, cognitive, meta-cognitive, mnemonic, social and affective. Difference in employing the strategies among the groups and items was also observed. The skills groups used more of the strategies comparing with the LQ4000 group although that the latter had better mastery of the language. Listening skill is a basic skill that is regarded as a key to the other language skills.   Keyword: Hearing – Listening- Descriptions – Differences – Strategies.   Abstrak: Kertas ini bertujuan untuk membicarakan melalui kaedah perincian deskriptif  lapangan, strategi pelajar dalam mengatasi permasalahan pembelajaran kemahiran mendengar. Data dikumpul daripada 184 pelajar melalui borang soal selidik yang mengandungi 25 soalan. Analisa maklum balas menyerlahkan penggunaan pelajar secara sederhana mengikut taksonomi Oxford. Strategi yang paling kerap – mengikut turutan- ialah penggantian, pemikiran, meta kognitif, memori, sosial dan emosi. Perbezaan dalam menggunakan strategi dalam kalangan kumpulan-kumpulan dan item-item juga diperhatikan. Kumpulan yang dalam tahap mempelajari kemahiran bahasa menggunakan lebih banyak strategi jika dibandingkan dengan dengan kumpulan LQ4000 walaupun kumpulan terdahulu lebih menguasai bahasa Arab. Kemahiran mendengar dianggap sebagai kemahiran utama kepada kemahiran lain. . Kata kunci: Pendengaran – Mendengar – Perincian – Perbezaan – Strategi.

Abstract Research on the issues of the learners of Japanese outside Japan has increased with the expansion of Japanese language teaching worldwide, but research on those who teach them has received less attention. This paper focuses on one of the issues which Japanese instructors overseas face, in particular, that of native speakers. An individual’s competence in his/her first language in a foreign environment changes over time. The changes become more obvious when first language speakers find themselves in their own country after spending some considerable time overseas. In this study the speakers of the first language were thirteen native speaker instructors teaching at tertiary institutions in Australia. They were interviewed while on a visit to Japan regarding their communication skills in Japan both at the linguistic and non-linguistic levels. The results of the study show a wide range of changes observed; some features are common to many of these instructors while other changes are not. Changes in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are reported. Associated aspects include skills for determining politeness levels. Non-linguistic features include socio-cultural aspects of Japanese society such as gift-giving customs, and appropriate dress. These changes in communication skills were detected and evaluated by the speakers themselves based on their own encounters while in Japan. The implications for their role as language instructors outside Japan are also discussed.

We desperately need a good hearing in this life, because if we have a hearing disorder or just a little hearing loss then we will have difficulty in communicating with others. Many language teachers, especially Arabic, ignore the skill of listening lesson.With this research, can be known how far the effectiveness of MP3 usage in learning listening skills of Arabic language, to distinguish the sound of that language. By using the media players 3 (MP3), the researcher can carry out learning listening skill with a nice and fun with the evidence of the students who are more enthusiastic when following the lesson. This medium can only be effective for advanced students with 6% increase in outcomes, but for notice students who have the ability to think slowly it will be ineffective, as evidenced by a decline in value of -6,5%. It is due to the lack of students ability to listen to the voice of native speakers who tend to be fast, and also the dialect used by native speakers is different from the dialect they use every day.
