Objectives: The use of herbs which has been increasing worldwide, requires special considerations particularly in pregnant woman. The present study was conducted at Alzahra Teaching hospital (from March 2016 to August 2017) to explore the pattern of herbal use during pregnancy in Guilan province (North of Iran). Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from 836 eligible women, who were interviewed at postnatal ward, and were analyzed. Results: The results of the study showed that 19.6% of the women consumed herbs during pregnancy. The most commonly used herbs included mint, flixweld, and cinnamon; in addition, the most prevalent indications resulted from these herbs consumption were gastrointestinal complications and cold. The rate of herbal consumption in pregnancy was related to education (P=0.001) and resistance (P=0.008); however, no relation was found regarding age (P=0.203), employment (P=0.255), or gravity (P=0.935). Conclusions: Although the findings of this study were preferable to those of some other studies, due to the importance of the issue, it is vital that health care providers to be open to question the herbal use during pregnancy.

Most drugs are not tested for use during pregnancy, consequently, labeling, which may include information about fetal safety, includes nothing about dosing, efficacy, or maternal safety. Yet these are concerns of health care providers considering treatment of disease during pregnancy. Therefore, the practitioner treats the pregnant woman with the same dose recommended for use in adults (typically men) or may decide not to treat the disease at all. However, is the choice of not treating a woman during pregnancy better than dealing with the challenges which accompany treatment? This paper, which summarizes metabolic and physiologic changes induced by pregnancy, illustrates that standard adult dosing is likely to be incorrect during pregnancy.

This paper wants to briefly review the available research on voice changes during pregnancy, to point out reasons why these changes could be subscribed to a voice disorder pathology and the need for these patients to be taken in charge with a suitable therapeutic approach. The available research literature looks mainly into identifying and exposing evidence of symptoms and signs against the presence of voice disorder in pregnant women and focuses poorly on proposing a therapeutic approach for the identified voice disorder within the context of pregnancy. This period of altered physiology and anatomic changes within the body of a pregnant woman is limited and transitory, most of times with no permanent visible impact on voice. However, pregnant women may benefit of not only being informed and aware about this disorder, but also counseling or therapy with the purpose of managing their voice in an optimal way, so that they avoid possible permanent phonotrauma.

ABSTRACTCarbapenem-resistantEnterobacteriaceae(CRE) usually infect patients with significant comorbidities and health care exposures. We present a case of a pregnant woman who developed community-acquired pyelonephritis caused by KPC-producingKlebsiella pneumoniae. Despite antibiotic treatment, she experienced spontaneous prolonged rupture of membranes, with eventual delivery of a healthy infant. This report demonstrates the challenge that CRE may pose to the effective treatment of common infections in obstetric patients, with potentially harmful consequences to maternal and neonatal health.

Pregnancy marks a unique milestone in woman’s life cycle enriched with an array of physical, psychological, social and even spiritual needs. In this context, an optimal level of oral health status has become fundamental to overall health and well-being of a pregnant woman. This is evident more than ever before, for preventing exacerbation of poor oral health in pregnancy, possible control of adverse pregnancy outcomes whilst ensuring low risk for early childhood dental caries for the offspring. Nevertheless, pregnancy renders special oral health needs for a woman compounded by changes in dietary habits, oral hygiene practices and hormonal changes thereby increasing the risk of dental caries and periodontitis. The possible link between Periodontitis and adverse outcomes in pregnancy is well known. The pandemic caused by acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) compounded by emergence more virulent strains not only indelibly impacted on population, countries, economies and health systems across the globe but exposed vulnerable population groups to pervasive health catastrophes. There is accumulating concerns on periodontitis linking with severe complications of Covid-19 attributed to commonalities of exacerbated inflammatory responses. Moreover, adverse Covid-19 induced maternal and fetal outcomes has garnered attention of researchers based on the previous knowledge indicating adverse outcomes attributed to epidemics of human corona viruses. However, it is not known how maternal oral hygiene status and burden of periodontitis impact on Covid-19 induced adverse outcomes in pregnancy. However, it could be rational to argue that poor oral health of a pregnant woman could elevate her risks for adverse health outcomes. Oral health care in pregnancy has received recognition as an essential element of comprehensive antenatal health care provision. However, the persistent global public health emergency of Covid-19 has profoundly impacted on availability of and accessibility to routine oral health care services. Therefore, accessing routine oral health care services poses serious causes for concern among pregnant women. Against this backdrop, present opinion attempts to explore and expound the potential of preventive oral health care could offer to mitigate the potential risks of Covid-19 induced adverse maternal outcomes embracing the context of Sri Lanka: a developing lower middle-income country.

1. Introduction. Studies of radiation damage in ceramics are of interest not only from a fundamental point of view but also because it is important to understand the behavior of ceramics in various practical radiation enyironments- fission and fusion reactors, nuclear waste storage media, ion-implantation devices, outer space, etc. A great deal of work has been done on the spectroscopy of point defects and small defect clusters in ceramics, but relatively little has been performed on defect agglomeration using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in the same kind of detail that has been so successful in metals. This article will assess our present understanding of radiation damage in ceramics with illustrations using results obtained from the authors' work.
