Ibn Khaldun is a no stranger amidst the Muslim and non-Muslim historians, through his Muqaddimah. The Muqaddimah is not only a credible text for the studies of civilization, ethnic and heritage; but at the same time can also be used as a source reference for the study of religions. Under the taxonomy of two main types of Muslim scholarship in the study of religions, namely the purposive and the non-purposive types, Ibn Khaldun is included in the second. Through the use of qualitative research design, which utilizes content analysis method on the Muqaddimah, this article found that Ibn Khaldun’s descriptions on the study of religions are inclusive with his notes on the historical and civilizational studies. Despite of his interest and focus in the intellectual pursuit, his colourful life and continuous relocations are also among the factors that mould his creativity and innovation in his writings. In Ibn Khaldun’s study, religion is considered as one of the important factors in civilizational building. Discussions on human, be it from the spectra of anthropology, sociology, psychology, economics, epistemology or historiography, as found in Ibn Khaldun’s cUmrān, also include a few topics in the study of religions. In short, themes of Ibn Khaldun’s study of religions could be divided into two main types, namely Ibn Khaldun’s views on religion and Ibn Khaldun’s studies of religions. These themes were included in the Muqaddimah selectively, which must be comprehended in line with his original intention of writing this historical text. Keywords: Ibn Khaldun, Muqaddimah, cUmrān science, views on religion and study of religions Abstrak: Ibn Khaldun merupakan tokoh ilmuwan yang tidak asing dalam kalangan sejarawan Muslim dan bukan Muslim, melalui magnum opusnya iaitu Muqaddimah.

Managing four generations with different set of beliefs, values and attitudes is a critical challenge for an organization. Intergenerational conflict may emerge from diverse preferences and misinterpretation of words and actions. For instance, in the digital era tech-savvy millennials wanted to have flexible work schedules (Clendon & Walker, 2012) and less interaction with their managers (Schultz & Schwepker, 2012). Meanwhile, Baby Boomer managers preferred direct communication (Holian, 2015) because they wanted to have face-to-face discussion. Additionally, in many organizations Baby Boomer managers were still implementing command-and-control management (Faller & Gogek, 2019), while Gen Y and Gen Z workforce favored constructive feedbacks (Anderson & Buchko, 2016). For young workforce, specifically Gen Z, if their managers practice the traditional boss-subordinate relationship, they prefer to quit and move to another company. On the one hand generational diversity is an advantage, but on the other hand it can be disastrous if not handled well. Leaders are expected to minimize workplace miscommunication and conflict arising from multigenerational differences between staff and managers to attain organizational performance. To date, many leadership styles have been researched, however Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire XII has been the most widely used to measure how a leader should behave to reduce conflict in the multigenerational work environment, criticize poor work of older-generation followers, and emphasize on high levels of performance (Littrell et al., 2018). The objectives of this study are to investigate the perceived leadership behaviors and the differences in perceived leadership behavior among multigenerational managers. Keywords: Gen Y, Indonesia, LBDQ-XII, Multigenerational Workforce, Perceived Leadership Behavior

The rapid growth in online shopping and associated parcel deliveries prompts investigation of the factors that contribute to parcel delivery demand. In this study, we evaluated the influence of locational and household characteristics on e-commerce home delivery demand. While past research has largely focused on the impacts of the adoption of online shopping using individual/household survey data, we made use of data from an e-commerce carrier. A linear regression model was estimated considering factors such as degree of urbanization, transit and shopping accessibility, and household attributes. The results both confirm and contradict prior research findings, highlighting the potential for a non-negligible influence of the local context on demand for parcel deliveries.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to ascertain the control role of independent non-executive directors (INEDs) in Malaysian public listed companies (PLCs), as prescribed in the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance (MCCG).The MCCG (2000) requires substantive involvement of INEDs on the audit, nomination and remuneration board sub-committees. The study also examines the effectiveness of INEDs in discharging their monitoring roles in these sub-committees. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative research design consisting of a series of interviews with board members of Malaysian-owned PLCs on the board of Bursa Malaysia was used. Findings – Interviews with 27 company directors reveal that, due to their independence, INEDs are crucial in safeguarding the interests of smaller investors if situations arise in which shareholders’ interests may be threatened. The interviews also disclose that the audit committee possesses the most authority among the sub-committees, as it derives its power not only from the Listing Requirements but also from statute, as well as being involved in areas of the company not traditionally associated with the committee. The study also reveals the differences in opinion between executive directors and INEDs with regard to the extent of INEDs’ effectiveness. Research limitations/implications – This research utilises interviews. Generalisation may be an issue when interviews are used as the method of inquiry. In addition, the sample is not random, as access to many directors is dependent on recommendations. In addition, the respondents have been consciously selected to cover various board positions, including independent and non-independent directors. Practical implications – The findings from this research suggest that INEDs are able to discharge their responsibilities in overseeing the conduct of executives and protecting the interests of investors. In addition, the interviews disclose that the effectiveness of INEDs depends on how non-executive directors view INEDs being on the board. Rather than focusing solely on their control role, INEDS are expected to have a more proactive and progressive role in ensuring sustainable growth and the expansion of the business entity. Originality/value – There are limited studies using qualitative research design in investigating the effectiveness of INEDs in the control role of the board in developing countries. Prior studies were predominantly based upon the experience of Western economies.

Leadership training is key to promoting more active leadership, but the effects of leadership training can depend on the gender context. Gender congruence between manager and employee can affect how the manager employs leadership behaviors adapted from training and how employees perceive leadership behavior. Quantitative data on 474 managers’ 4,833 employees before and after a large-scale field experiment with leadership training enable us to examine changes in employee-perceived leadership following training. The results show that gender congruence between manager and employee is associated with stronger leadership training effects on employee-perceived leadership behaviors. Female gender congruence shows the most pronounced effects.
