In this study we present the results of our research into the effect of Enrofloxacin (a fluoroquinolone drug) on red blood cell indices of ducklings, breed Bashkir duck. The ducklings of the experiment group received Enrofloxacin at a concentration of 200 g/L via drinking water for 10 consecutive days. Blood samples from all the ducklings were collected by cardiac puncture on Day 1, Day 3, Day 5, Day 7, Day 9 and Day 11 after the withdrawal of the drug. After evaluating red blood cell indices, including RBC count, hematocrit, color index of blood, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hemoglobin content and erythrocyte indices we observed short-term reliable changes in blood of ducklings in the experiment group. We registered the most dynamic changes in RBC count of Group II on Day 1, Day 9 and Day 11, when it increased by 16%, 14% and 16% respectively whereas on Day 3 we registered a single decrease by 8% as compared to the control group. We marked ambiguous variations in color index of blood, MCV and MHC. Throughout the experiment we noted the most pronounced changes in practically every value only on Day 5, when we registered increases in RBC count, hemoglobin content, color index of blood, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume and mean hemoglobin content of duckling blood. In spite of the fact that these singular changes may reflect certain intensification of erythropoiesis, on the whole they do not reflect any negative effect of Enrofloxacin on physiological status of ducklings.

AbstractThe effects of platelet donation by apheresis on different parameters of the erythrogram are still unclear. The objective was to meta-analyze the effect of plateletpheresis on hematocrit, hemoglobin, and erythrocyte count, with a systematic review with random effects meta-analysis of the mean difference. The PRISMA guidelines were considered, as well as 133 search strategies on four different databases. Reproducibility was guaranteed and methodological quality was evaluated. Heterogeneity was evaluated with Galbraith and DerSimonian-Laird’s, publication bias with a funnel plot and a Begg’s test, sensitivity analysis and a cumulative meta-analysis were also conducted. Eighteen (18) articles were included, 17 evaluated the effects on hematocrit in 2,564 donors; 13 on hemoglobin in 1,640 donors; and 4 on red blood cell count in 243 donors. A decrease of 2.26% (CI95% = 2.11–2.41) was observed in hematocrit, of 0.80 g/dL (CI95% = 0.75–0.86) in hemoglobin and −0.21 × 1012/L (CI95% = −0.13; −0.29) in red blood cell count. Plateletpheresis has a negative effect on the erythrogram parameters, explained by blood loss in the kits used for the procedure and cell lysis. Such evidence is relevant to secure the efficiency and safety of the procedure, improve selection processes or determine the number of donations that can be performed without affecting donors’ health.

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of thyroid hormone deficiency on the erythrocytic system in dogs. Dogs with clinical symptoms of hypothyreosis such as obesity, hyperpigmentation, and lethargy were selected. The dogs demonstrating breed predisposition to hypothyreosis were incorporated in the analysis: Dachshunds, Retrievers, and mixed-breed dogs. A detailed history was taken and clinical, hormonal, biochemical and haematological blood tests were performed. Peripheral blood samples were taken from 53 dogs. Finally, the dogs with the initial T4 (thyroxine) concentration < 1.3 µg/dl and animals demonstrating clinical improvement after a 2-month therapy with levothyroxine at a dose of 10 µg/kg administeredper ostwo times a day were qualified. The animals between 10 months to 13 years of age were divided into two groups: clinically healthy (control group, n = 35) and dogs presenting clinical symptoms of hypothyreosis (experimental group, n = 18). In this research, the broadly described normocytic normochromic non-regenerative anaemia was not diagnosed in dogs with hypothyreosis. However, a positive correlation between T4 and red blood cell indices such as the average mass of haemoglobin per red blood cell, concentration of haemoglobin in a given volume of packed red blood cells as well as a negative correlation with haematocrit value was discovered in the experimental group after the 2-month therapy with levothyroxine. These results point to the influence of thyroid hormones on erythropoiesis. This observation is partially consistent with other studies, which noted the casual link between the changes in red blood cell system and the function of thyroid in dogs and humans.


In this article, the authors draw attention of readers to the capabilities of the conjunctival microscopy (CM) the method for studying the processes of vascular permeability and microhemorheology in patients with systemic sclerosis (SS). An original simultaneous examination of 48 patients with SS (mean age 51±1,7 years) and a comparable age group (4,74±2,3 years) of the control group of people without any diseases that might affect microcirculation (MC) by the CM-method was performed. The results demonstrated high informativeness of the CM-method in the diagnostics and assessment of vascular permeability and intravascular red blood cell aggregation (RBCA) in SS. The main changes in MC during SS revealed by the CM-method are the increase in vascular permeability and enhancement of RBCA in all types of microvessels. Objective: The aim of the present study leads a comparative assessment of the toxicological profile of PEGylated fourth and fifth-generation poly (propylene imine) dendrimers (PPI). Methods: 4.0G and 5.0G generations of PPI dendrimer were synthesized and PEGylated with Mono polyethylene glycol 5000 (MPEG-5000). Each PEGylated 4.0G and 5.0G dendrimeric generation were administered in three different doses: 2.5 mg/kg, 25 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg (i.e., low, intermediate and high dose) to wister rats. After the dose administration, the blood and tissue samples of wister rats were collected after 24 h and 15 d after. All the collected samples were proceeded for hematological, biochemical and histopathological studies. Results: After 24 h of (250 mg/kg) dose administration PEGylated 5.0G PPI dendrimer the RBC count, hemoglobin content and WBC count were found 7.873±0.129 mill/cmm, 13.833±0.491g/dl and 9033.33±2384.906 mill/cmm, while PEGylated 4.0G PPI dendrimer indicated RBC count, hemoglobin content and WBC count 8.733±0.239 mill/cmm, 14.033±0.12 g/dl and 9666.667±2567.316 mill/cmm, in blood samples as compare to RBC count 9.346±0.037 mill/cmm, hemoglobin content 15.35±0.15 g/dl and WBC count 8500±286.675 mill/cmm of the animals of normal control group. Thus there are no remarkable changes (p>0.05) in RBC count, hemoglobin content and other hematological profile after 24 h in comparison of normal control group of animals. Similarily insignificant changes (p>0.05) in serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and sections of different organs indicate inoffensive nature of both generations of PEGylated 4.0G and 5.0 G PPI dendrimers. Conclusion: It can be concluded that fifth-generation PPI dendrimers are more suitable as compared to fourth generation of PPI dendrimer, while both dendrimers are not generating any severe toxicity.

Aim To study the oxidative modification of red blood cell Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) in vivo and in vitro to substantiate the use of a new oxidative stress marker.Material and methods Red blood cell Cu,Zn SOD was measured by depression of nitrotetrazolium blue reduction by the superoxide anion generated in xanthine oxidase xanthine oxidation. Red blood cell Cu,Zn SOD was measured immunochemically. The biochemical study was performed in the control group (patients with low extremity fracture without known history of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia) and in groups of patients with acute myocardial infarction, stable angina, and decompensated heart failure. For evaluation of oxidative stress intensity in IHD patients, an empirical SOD oxidative modification coefficient (OMCSOD) was proposed, which is a Cu,Zn SOD activity / Cu,Zn SOD content ratio.Results The red blood cell Cu,Zn SOD activity was significantly decreased in all IHD groups compared to the control group. Furthermore, OMCSOD was also considerably decreased in IHD patients, which warrants the use of this biochemical index as an oxidative stress marker.Conclusion It was shown that the Cu,Zn SOD modification was induced by interaction of the enzyme molecules with a natural dicarbonyl, malonic dialdehyde, and OMCSOD can be used for evaluation of oxidative stress intensity in IHD patients.

ABSTRACT RBC count plays an important role in animal diagnosis. Despite the many technologies available in different automated hematology analyzers, when it comes to the blood of wild animals it is still difficult to find an easy and affordable solution for multiple species. This study aims to evaluate the proposed automatic red blood cell counter. Blood samples (1 ocelot - Leopardus pardalis, 1 monkey - Cebus apella, 1 coati - Nasua nasua, 62 dogs - Canis familiaris, and 5 horses - Equus caballus) were analyzed using three methods: 1-manual count, 2-automatic count by image, and 3-semi-automatic count by image; blood from dogs and horses were also analyzed by a fourth method: 4-automatic count by impedance. The counts in methods 2 and 3 were produced by the proposed red blood cell counter. Results were compared using Pearson's correlation and plots with different methods as the criterion standard. RBC counts in methods 1, 2, and 3 correlated very well with those in the method 4 (r ≥ 0.94). RBC counts produced by method 2 were highly correlated with method 3 (r = 0.998). The results indicate that the proposed method can be used as an automatic or semi-automatic counting method in clinics that are currently using the manual method for RBC assessment.
