Study Design: Prospective case series.Purpose: To assess the corporal morphology of the fused body and adjacent segment conditions.Overview of Literature: It is known that two fused vertebral bodies take the similar shape of the single body with inwaisting, with or without caudal flaring of the fused body, and that the fused body can cause the fusion disease at the adjacent segment that can be a risk factor for potential neurological compromise.Methods: Radiograms of the 11 study subjects (six men and five women), aged 22–90 years who visited the outpatients’ clinic for various neck complaints without trauma history were examined. C4–5 synostosis was an incidental finding in all the subjects.Results: All the fused bodies were inwaisted and had anterior caudal breaking but no interior corporal flaring. Adjacent segment disease was not found in eight patients aged <40 years. Disk degeneration was found at C3–4 and C5–6 in three patients each and at C6–7 in two patients. Disk degeneration was limited to the adjacent segments.Conclusions: Degenerative disk changes are associated with the natural aging process, and the corporal morphology of the fused vertebral becomes inwaisted similar to that in the single vertebrae.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition with high prevalence worldwide. OA affects not only the articular cartilage, but the entire joint, including the subchondral bone, ligaments, capsule, synovial membrane and the periarticular muscles. Despite the fact that the risks associated with OA increase with age, it is not a part of the natural aging process. It typically involves the knee, hip, spine, hand and foot joints. Several factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of OA, including biomechanical factors, proinflammatory mediators and proteases. On the other hand, it was mostly the results of the studies conducted on the genetic, genomic and epigenetic aspects of OA, from among many of its underlying etiological factors, which shed light on the molecular processes involved in the etiopathogenesis of OA. As the mechanisms that cause joint tissue damage in OA come to light, the treatment of OA will go beyond just providing symptomatic relief. Consequentially, new treatments will emerge that will either slow or completely stop the progression of OA.

A heat treatable A7N01 (Al-Zn-Mg) aluminum alloy mainly used to fabricate high-speed train body structures was double-sided welded by MIG welding. The natural aging behavior of the joint was systematically studied by local and global mechanical property testing method. Based on TEM observation and EPMA analysis, the key factors that lead to different natural aging behavior among various regions of the joint were discussed. The global tensile strength of the joints increased obviously after natural aging. All the joint samples fractured in the weld zone, which demonstrated the weld zone was the weakest zone of the joints. And the strength of the global welds were depended on the microstructure and natural aging ability of the weld zone. Moreover, the increase of the tensile property of the three local regions in the weld zone after post natural aging decreased as Middle>lower>upper. The above phenomenon was also further confirmed by microhardness measurement. The age hardening behavior is greatly influenced by the concentration of strengthening precipitates forming element Zn. The Zn content in the weld zone determined by EPMA showed that element Zn was dispersed unevenly, which is attributed to the double V-groove design used in this work and Zn vaporization in the molten pool during welding. The Zn content in the middle layer metals is higher than that of the upper and lower layers, resulting in the remarkable hardening response for the middle layer of the weld zone during natural aging process. Additionally, the solution zone containing the same Zn content as the base metal and undergoing sufficient solid solution during welding was found to possess the high hardening ability after natural aging process.

Objective: To analyze the meaning of dementia by those affected by it, and to give them a voice. Material and methods: Descriptive phenomenology through interviews with people of both genders who are over 50 years old and living in Tarragona (Spain), with a diagnosis of mild or moderate dementia, mainly related to Alzheimer’s disease. Results: Three main themes emerged: 1) normalization of memory loss in early stages as part of the natural aging process; 2) self-awareness of progressive memory decline, which is concealed from others, and 3) adaptation processes and strategies to coexist with their condition after diagnosis. Conclusions: The most evident features were the lack of specialized infrastructures within the health system in terms of care, prevention programs, and early detection.

The natural aging process accelerate the appearance and the installation of diseases and symptoms characteristic of the age in which the physical and cognitive aspects are compromised progressively. Increasing the necessity of specialized cares and intensive accompaniment. This study aimed to evaluate through the Nursing Activities Score appliance, the nursing team’s working load, destined to elderly people assisted at intensive unit care and subsidize the personal sizing according to what advocate the legislation. It is about a descriptive and documental study of quantitative approach. It was used as data basis 50 patient records of elderly users admitted at a public intensive unit care from João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. It was determined that 56% (28) of the elderly in his first hospitalization day at the Intensive Unit Care, required a nursing high working load while 44% (42) a nursing low working load. Through the sum of the Nursing Activities Score average score, we can achieve the total of hours at the nursing assistance necessaries to the elderly patient care during the hospitalization. The average scores obtained by the total score, corresponded to 59.2 ± 7.8, transforming in hours according to the conducted calculus, correspond to 14.47 hours of nursing assistance turned to the elderly people. It is waited that the results can contribute to quantify the expended assistance time and also evidence the real necessity of the people to ensure safe and quality assistance practices to the elderly people.  Descriptors: Workload. Abstract Objectives The primary objective of the present study was to review the demographics of infants and children operated upon for Meckel's diverticulum. The secondary objectives were to review the clinical characteristics, surgical procedures performed, postoperative complications, and the outcome. Materials and Methods This study is a single-institutional, retrospective study and descriptive in nature. It consisted of infants and children below 12 years who were operated upon for Meckel's diverticulum. This study was conducted at the author's department of pediatric surgery, and it was performed for 21 years from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2020. Results Eighty-four children below 12 years were operated upon for Meckel's diverticulum during the study period of 21 years. The ratio for males to females was 3:1. This study consisted of infants, (n = 22, 26.19%), children of 1 to 5 years of age (n =19, 22.61%), and children of 6 to 12 years of age (n = 43, 51.19%). Clinically, children with Meckel's diverticulum presented in the following order of frequency: (1) intestinal obstruction (n = 59, 70.23%), (2) perforation peritonitis (n = 17, 20.23%), (3) lower gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 4, 4.76%), and (4) incidental finding (n = 4, 4.76%). In 35 (41.66%) children, bowel gangrene was detected. One-fifth (n = 17) of Meckel's diverticulum was responsible for the secondary intussusception. In children (n = 84), for Meckel's diverticulum, surgical procedures were performed in the following order of frequency: (1) resection of Meckel's diverticulum, an adjacent segment of ileum and ileoileal anastomosis (n = 36, 42.85%); (2) Meckel's diverticulectomy (n = 32, 38.09%); (3) resection of Meckel's diverticulum, an adjacent segment of ileum with or without cecum and an ileostomy (n = 12, 14.28%); and (4) resection of Meckel's diverticulum, an adjacent segment of ileum, cecum, part of the colon, and ileocolic anastomosis (n = 4, 4.76%). In 8 (9.52%) children, complications were documented during the postoperative period. The present study observed three (3.57%) deaths during the postoperative period. Conclusion Meckel's diverticulum was one of the common causes of acute intestinal obstruction in infants and older children. Ninety percent of children with Meckel's diverticulum presented with features of an acute abdomen. Forty percent of children evidenced bowel gangrene during the surgical procedures. In these children, early diagnosis, timely referral, and institution of surgical therapy for acute abdomen/intestinal obstruction may prevent the development of bowel gangrene and the requirement of bowel resections to some extent.

Ascorbic acid (AA) is able to neutralize reactive oxygen species and is essential for collagen synthesis. In aging process oxidative stress is elevated. This study aims to investigate the effects of AA supplementation on the periodontal ligament (PL) of rats during aging. Twenty five rats were used and divided into groups: J90 (90-day-old control), E345 (345-day-old control), E428 (428-day-old control), EA345 (345-day-old supplemented with AA from 90-day-old on) and EA428 (428-day-old supplemented with AA from 90-day-old on). We analyzed the thickness, density of fibroblasts and blood vessels and collagen fibers types in the PL. In group J90 there was predominantly type III collagen fibers (87.64%). In animals supplemented with AA, the area filled by type I fibers (group EA345: 65.67%, group EA428: 52.23%) was higher than type III fibers. PL in group EA428 was thicker than the one observed in group E428 (P < 0.05). During natural aging process, AA promoted the maturation of collagen fibers and enhanced angiogenesis in periodontal ligament. One can conclude that the supplementation with AA represented a beneficial factor for the development of PL in aged rats.

In the second of a two-part article on the canine intervertebral disk, the morphological changes which occur within the disk during aging and degeneration are described. Degeneration of the intervertebral disk appears to be a self-perpetuating process as a consequence of disruption to the annulus fibrosus, cellular remodeling, altered biomechanical loading, and nutritional deficiencies. In the nonchondrodystrophoid disk, premature acceleration of the aging process can occur following traumatic disruption to the annulus fibrosus. This degeneration usually occurs in isolated disks along the length of the vertebral column. By contrast, disk degeneration in the chondrodystrophoid breeds occurs simultaneously in all disks along the vertebral column and usually is well advanced by two years of age. Ultrastructural differences between the intervertebral disk of the nonchondrodystrophoid dog and that of the chondrodystrophoid dog may explain the rapidity and severity of degenerative changes in the latter breeds.
