Then, it was analyzed statistically by using SPSS verse 16.0. Then, the data were calculated by using N-Gain between pre-test and post-test in the experimental class. After conducting this research, the result of this research was that the post-test score of the experimental class was getting higher than the pre-test score. It can be seen from the average post-test score of the experimental class was 71.40, which improved from the pre-test score 56.80. The average post-test on the control class was 66.36 was lower than the experimental class. In conclusion, it can be stated that the students who are taught using pattern guide strategy achieve better than those who are not taught using pattern guide strategy.

Abstract: This research aimed to investigate whether or not there were significant differences in reading comprehension and writing achievement between the eighth grade students of SMP Islam Az-Zahra 2 Palembang who were taught by using Literature-Based instruction and those who were not. This study used one of the quasi experimental designs: pretest-posttest design. The sample was selected purposively from the whole population based on their reading comprehension scores. Forty six eighth graders were selected as the sample and equally divided into experimental and control groups. Pretest and posttest were given to both groups.  Using paired sample statistics,  the results of the experimental group showed that the students’ reading comprehension and writing achievement ? significantly improved. Furthermore, the result of the independent t-test showed that with mean difference of reading comprehension was 8.609, t value 11.111(p<0.05). Moreover, the mean difference of writing achievement was 6.8043, t value 10.478 (p<0.05).   Keywords:   Literature-based instruction, reading                     comprehension and writing achievement.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there was significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text between those who were taught through Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method and those who were not. Forty-nine students were selected as the sample and quasi-experimental, non-randomized pre-test and post-test design were employed. The analysis of covariance showed that the students who were taught by using CIRC method statistically outperformed those who were not on their reading comprehension of narrative text, (F (1, 48) = 13.56, p < .05). This result implies that CIRC is an effective method to teach reading comprehension, particularly on narrative text. Since this study only focused on narrative text, future researchers might be interested to seek the effect of CIRC on other text genres. Similar study though may be conducted with a randomized design of larger population.

The purpose of this research was to find out whether or not it is significantly effective to teach reading comprehension by using Predict, Locate, Add Note strategy to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau in the academic year of 2016/2017. The researcher used pre experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was all the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau which consisted of 440 students. The sample was taken through cluster random sampling. The sample was 40 students. The data was collected through test consisted of 20 items of multiple choices. The data were analyzed through four techniques: 1) students’ individual score, 2) minimum mastery criteria, 3) normality, and 4) matched t-test calculation. The result of this research: (1) the mean students’ score in the pre-test was 62.3, (2) The mean score of post-test was 77.3, and (3) the result of Matched t-test was 10.86, which was higher than 1.684 value of the t-table of 39 (40-1) with 95% significant level for one tailed-test. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that it was significantly effective to teach reading comprehension by using Predict, Locate, Add Note Strategy to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau in academic year of 2016/2017.

Teaching vocabulary to children with special needs is not easy. There are some problems faced by teachers when they taught English vocabulary to the children with special needs, they did not pay attention to the teacher, and they lost their interest in English subject. This quasi experimental research attempted to describe what extent puppet and flashcard lead the children with special needs to the vocabulary development and to discuss students’ attitude towards puppet and flashcard media in learning vocabulary. The participants were students of eighth-grade of SLB Negeri Ungaran and SLB Widya Bhakti Semarang. There were two instruments; test and questionnaire. The results showed that the significance between post-test score of puppet group and flashcard group was 0.000 with significance 0.000 < 0.05. Furthermore, according to result of the questionnaire, students perception towards both media were positive, yet their interests in flashcard was higher than those in puppet media. It is suggested that flashcard media was more effective to be used in teaching vocabulary for children with special needs.    Keywords: Puppet, Flashcard, Teaching Vocabulary, Quasi Experimental Research.

This research uses quasi-experimental research that requires a post-test for both groups. The research population was eighth grade students of SMP 6 Toili Barat. The sample of this research was class VIII A as an experimental class and consisted of 26 students while class VIII B was a control class and consisted of 27 students. The test consisted of pre-test and post-test. Data were analyzed statistically. After being analyzed, the result of t-counted was 6,744 with a degree of freedom 51, and a significance level of 0,05, t-table was 1,675. Therefore, the t-test result is higher than the t-table. It means that the hypothesis of this research can be accepted. The result showed that there was a significant influence in using Numbered Heads Together to improve students’ writing abilities in descriptive text in eighth grade at SMPN 6 Toili Barat Keywords:Improving; Writing; Descriptive Text; NHT.
