The purpose of the research is to reveal the peculiarities of the digital collections functioning in the field of cultural heritage. Research methodology is based on the application of a systematic approach to the digitization issue’s study of cultural heritage sites and museum practice. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is the issue’s actualization of the functioning of digital collections of cultural heritage in the cultural context, the statement of the digital canon expansion in the field of cultural heritage. Conclusions. It is emphasized that the discrepancy between the scale of digitized content and the real number of non-digitized and unpublished works of culture and art raises important questions about who decides which works will be published, will enter the scientific and educational circulation, will expand the digital canon and will serve as a source of inspiration for the general public. Thus, the range of problems in the development of digital collections and digital content aggregators in the field of cultural heritage becomes evident. Digital publishing platforms should be seen as primary sources that reflect the cultural, political and social issues of the modern era and reveal ontological and epistemic gaps in the perception of cultural, ethnic and social affiliation. The analysis of conceptual and methodological approaches to the development of modern digital technologies in the field of cultural heritage, which defined the digital turn for all modern cultural processes, allows us to understand the basic patterns and trends associated with recording, analysis and transmission of cultural heritage at the present stage. Critical analysis of digital infrastructures enables the cultural study of the digital turn in the field of cultural heritage in order to identify the possibilities and limitations of digital technologies in the analysis, publication and dissemination of textual and visual materials, demonstrating works of culture and art.

High density remote survey technologies have become widespread practices. In recent years, we have seen a tenfold increase in volume of digital data acquired. Beyond this sheer amount of data, multimodal three-dimensional data exploitation has become another common challenge for specialists. The Aspectus project aims to ease the access to complex three-dimensional data and to promote collaborative work and remote expert assessment. Thus, we can get past the problem of distance and availability of the “object of expertise”, ranging from cultural heritage sites to artefacts. By extension, it enables us to circumvent the ever-present problem of destruction. Aspectus takes advantage of available open source solutions to produce a flexible web-based visualization and collaboration tool. After an overview of the theoretical framework and its technical implementation, we will discuss a practical application as part of the “Bibracte Numérique” project.

Influences exerted by cultural heritage properties on developments in architecture, town planning, or landscape design represent one of the criteria that are used to evaluate the Outstanding Universal Value of the properties nominated for listing as World Heritage Sites, which is criterion (ii). In 1996, the wording of criterion (ii) was revised to address the interchange of human values exhibited by cultural heritage properties. The main aim of this study was to discuss the changes that occurred to the application of criterion (ii) following the revision of its wording of 1996, particularly in relation to historic towns. The study also aimed at investigating the applicability of the revised version of criterion (ii) to the particularity of the cultural heritage of an Egyptian historic town and a potential World Heritage Site, which is “Historic quarters and monuments of Rosetta/Rachid”. To achieve these aims, a sample of World Heritage Sites, or potential ones, representing both the pre-1996 and the post-1996 historic towns whose Outstanding Universal Value was justified based on criterion (ii), was adopted for the analysis of the changes in the application of criterion (ii). Subsequently, a brief preview of the major features that represent the mutual influences experienced throughout Rosetta’s wider cultural context was carried out. The findings revealed that the prevalent trend in the post-1996 listings of historic towns is the emphasis on other cultures’ influences exerted on the concerned historic towns through interchanges of human values that take the form of exchanges of technical know-how, traditions and religious values. The findings also indicated the applicability of the revised version of criterion (ii) to the particularity of Rosetta’s cultural heritage. The study recommends inscribing Rosetta on the World Heritage List based on criterion (ii).

Purpose This paper aims to explore the Google Arts and Culture platform in terms of parameters used for categorizing the digital collections by it; the total number of items and their types; top contributing artists; top ten historical events and figures; and the top ten countries having maximum artworks. Design/methodology/approach An online method was used to collect the relevant data for achieving the objectives of the study. Data were harvested from the official website of Google Arts and Culture (https://artsandculture.google.com/) during the period of 15 May to 31 May 2018, and the same was tabulated in MS Excel for analysis and interpretation. Findings The findings revealed that Google Arts and Culture includes a total of 6,272 artists, 228 media and 121 art movements. Moreover, there are a total of 641 historical movements; 6,250 historical figures; 9,692 places; 3,226 museum views; 1,702 zoom views; 39,607 featured videos; and 5,528 featured stories; 122 items organized by color and 954 organized by time. Originality/value The present study is first of its kind that focuses on exploration of diverse arts and cultural heritages of different countries and by diverse artists made visible by Google Arts and Culture initiative. It will significantly reinforce the art and cultural heritage lovers to acquire the knowledge pertinent to various types of arts and cultures that prevailed in antiquity across the globe and also make aware the conservators about how to use digital technologies for efficient preservation and visibility of unique artworks, artists and the places whom they belong.

Since the "Turkish bath" is an important symbol of a living and cultural wealth that has been passed down through generations, it is an important example in terms of preserving and maintaining both tangible and intangible cultural heritage together. The aim of the study is to reveal the spatial, functional, and traditional features of the Turkish bath in the concrete and intangible cultural context and to examine the objects of Turkish bath in detail. In the study, it was also aimed to evaluate the baths with historical value and converted into museums in the context of tangible cultural heritage. The method of his study is a descriptive survey model based on reviewing the literature on the cultural heritage and Turkish bath culture. The literature findings are supported with visual materials that highlight the characteristics of Turkish bath objects and reflect the Turkish bath museums, as well as the spatial, functional, and traditional properties of Turkish baths. In the conclusion section of the study, the importance of making efforts to keep the tradition of the Turkish bath alive and to maintain the functions of the historical baths located in almost every city of Anatolia where there is tangible and intangible cultural heritage are mentioned. In cases where this is not possible, it was emphasized that turning historical baths into museums and preventing their disappearance should be seen as a solution at least in terms of protecting the tangible cultural heritage.

Providing as an example the Virtual Museum of Bulgarian Musical Theatre, institutionalized as an independent and constantly evolving Internet platform at the Museum of the Bulgarian Musical Theater (MBMT), this study represents a new contribution to the application of digital technologies to management and cultural promotion. The research answers questions regarding the current development and applications of digital technologies for designing multimedia content aiming to represent cultural heritage. The results offer an original virtual museum constructing method for interactive access to archival samples of performances in the following genres: opera, ballet, operetta, and musical. Additionally, the museum offers access to a presentation of the achievements of music and stage art through permanent thematic collections of repertoire programs, up-to-date information about the creative process of artists, conductors, directors, scenographers, choreographers. In the last few months, several universities and research agencies in Switzerland disclosed their plans to open new programs in the Digital Humanities. Starting from this observation, this article aims to outline the state of the art of the Digital Humanities in Switzerland. A first part deals with the institutional framework of the Swiss research landscape and mentions recent developments that led to a cross-disciplinary and widespread interest for the Digital Humanities in Switzerland. This first part includes also a short historical overview of the uses of digital technologies in the humanities and the library sector In Switzerland. The second part is a typology of the digital humanities in Switzerland segmented in five categories: Research projects, Digital collections, Tools, Digital publishing, E-learning & Information literacy. For each category the article provides a critical assesment of the field and a description of the major projects. The typology is intentionally inclusive to reflect the diversity of the actors involved and the distribution of Digital Humanities skills among several fields. In conclusion, the article traces possible scenarios for the institutionalization of Digital Humanities in Switzerland.

With the process of urbanization and post-industrialization, the diversity of regions and their unique cultures have become cultural properties for the competitiveness of cities. The concept of cultural heritage and resources has expanded in recent years. In the past, they were confined to architectural and artistic artifacts, but now, cultural heritage and resources have evolved to include environmental elements, industrial and vernacular construction, urban and rural settlements, and intangible elements related to community activities and ways of life. The community is the carrier of cultural resources and heritage. Cultural heritage sites contribute to the creation of a community’s identity. This multi-layered discussion of community engagements in cultural heritages and resources provides a unique approach to understanding cultural properties as sustainability enablers. This paper intends to go beyond the theoretical assumptions of the role of community cultural resources by studying the target research group, Bukjeong village in Seoul, Korea. The paper focuses on the possibilities of community engagement for sustainable development for urban regeneration. It proposes that cultural sustainability in its broader definition should be derived from the community realities of a particular place or cultural context. This approach must be grounded in the principles of regional networks, urban governance, and community-based activities.

The process of transformation of communicative practices of interpretation and popularization of cultural heritage in the framework of the accelerating dissemination and integration of digital technologies in all spheres of human activity is considered. The rhizomorphism of modern digital culture is analyzed, which inevitably aff ects the nature of the representation of monuments in virtual space. It is hypothesized that, despite the variety of approaches presented for creating digital avatars of cultural institutions and cultural heritage objects in a virtual environment, none of the currently existing solutions for Saint-Petersburg makes it possible to represent a cultural heritage object in the context of its retrospective visualization and connection with other culturally signifi cant objects, such as events and personalities. Conceptual grounds are proposed for a deeper understanding of the cultural monument as a subject of representation. An attempt is made to comprehend the representative capabilities of digital instruments, moreover, the question of the need to develop a full-scale and multi-functional digital platform for representing cultural heritage sites is raised.

Recently, laser scanning has been receiving greater attention as a useful tool for real-time 3D data acquisition, and various applications such as city modelling, DTM generation and 3D modelling of cultural heritage sites have been proposed. And, former digital data processing were demanded in the past digital archive techniques for cultural heritage sites. However, robust filtering method for distinguishing on- and off-terrain points by terrestrial laser scanner still have many issues. In the past investigation, former digital data processing using air-bone laser scanner were reported. Though, efficient tree removal methods from terrain points for the cultural heritage are not considered. In this paper, authors describe a new robust filtering method for cultural heritage using terrestrial laser scanner with "the echo digital processing technology" as latest data processing techniques of terrestrial laser scanner.

AbstractIn this study we draw on three analytic frameworks (Goffman 1981. Forms of talk. Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press; Rose 2007. Visual methodologies: An introduction to the interpretation of visual materials. London: Sage; Warburton 1998. Cartoons and teachers: Mediated visual images as data. In John Prosser (ed.), Image-based research: A sourcebook for qualitative researchers, 252–262. London: Routledge) to explore how multilingual children in a rural Ugandan primary school use visual and linguistic modes to create billboards messages about HIV/AIDS. Although HIV/AIDS education is required curriculum in public schools, and outside of the classroom students are exposed to various national public service announcements (e. g., on radio and television, and as billboards), there are still considerable cultural barriers that hinder open discussions between children and their teachers and parents about HIV/AIDS-related issues. Our findings suggest that communicating the complex language of HIV/AIDS prevention requires students in this cultural context to go beyond the linguistic mode and draw upon the visual in order to achieve a fuller range of socio-affective expression, and conceivably, to affect change by reaching a variety of audiences on multiple levels of human meaning making. Implications for literacy educators in multilingual contexts, where pressing social issues intersect with culturally sensitive or otherwise “unspeakable” topics, indicate that the visual offers a less institutionalized and culturally-laden space for children to synthesize the messages in their environments and their own relationship to them.
