Exploring lecturers' emotional challenges on their work performance at a rural university in Eastern Cape Province

Lecturers' well-being is essential for successful education at any university. The paper seeks to explore the untold stories of emotional challenges faced by some lecturers in a rural institution of higher learning in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Today's universities are faced with myriad challenges, among them is lecturers' well-being. Lecturers‘ anxiety is now rampant but not enough attention is given to it since people assume that academics can cope with life's stresses. Exploring the problem and consequences on lecturers' work will provide strategies that could be implemented by the university management. The existential anxiety theory, qualitative-case study design and a purposeful sampling technique were used for the study. Interviews were utilised to collect data. Data presentation and analysis were done using verbatim quotations. The study established that university lecturers were overwhelmed by challenges such as job uncertainty, pressure to engage in research, supervision, frequent student unrest, dwindling resources, pressure to integrate information communication and technology in teaching and learning, and so forth. The study concluded that lecturers were facing a myriad of challenges that had a negative impact on the execution of their duties. The paper recommends that the university management should develop a model to address the lecturers' identified challenges.

The objective of this study was to determine the information literacy (IL) skills of Management Sciences students. A questionnaire was adopted to collect data from 254 currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate students of two universities, one public sector and one private sector, situated in Lahore, Pakistan. An equal-sized stratified random sampling technique through random numbers was used for this purpose. The results showed that the majority of the students used the university library infrequently to locate their requisite information. Most of the students required a moderate level of information and preferred to get this information in an online format. The opinion of most of the students showed that they were proficient in using internet services (e.g. Google, Yahoo etc.) and different websites to identify their required information. The findings revealed that most of the students were unanimous in their skills to precisely recognize and describe the information they required. This study highlights the importance of IL skills, in order that students can become lifelong learners in retrieving, using, organizing, and presenting their information. The findings of this study would provide some insightful guidelines to university management, policy makers, and those concerned to augment and increase the IL training sessions and programs in Pakistan at the university level. These findings could be implemented on other universities with the same teaching and learning system, strategies, and circumstances.

Background: Mobile learning (m-learning) has been recognised as an essential educational technology component in higher education. The use of mobile devices and the prospect to learn irrespective of time and place make mobile learning an important tool for students. Many studies have been conducted because of the importance of m-learning in advancing teaching and learning but few published scholarly studies have focused on perception and mobile self-efficacy.Objectives: The study’s objective is to assess students’ perception and self-efficacy towards mobile learning at the University of Zululand.Method: The study adopted a descriptive survey method and a stratified random sampling technique was used to select 200 undergraduate students from the four faculties for the study. Data were collected using questionnaire. Statistical tools such as frequency count and simple percentage were employed in analysing the collected data.Results: WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube are the top three social media applications mostly used by the students. Results showed that the students have positive perceptions towards m-learning and possess the confidence needed in using m-learning solutions.Conclusion: Perception and mobile self-efficacy towards m-learning technology are important factors that help in determining whether or not students are ready to use m-learning. Hence, this study focuses on investigating the perception and self-efficacy of undergraduate students at the University of Zululand towards m-learning. Therefore, the study concludes that the University management fully integrates m-learning solutions to its academic programmes to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.

<p class="apa">The study examined ‘Students’ Involvement in Social Networking and attitudes towards its Integration into Teaching. The study was carried out in the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 17,618 undergraduate students enrolled into full time degree programmes in the University of Uyo for 2014/2015 academic session. The design of the study was survey design with ex-post facto approach. Random sampling technique was used to select 1730 students from the 12 faculties in the University. The instrument used for the study was ‘Students’ Social Networking and Attitude Questionnaire which was validated by an expert in curriculum studies and an expert in measurement and evaluation in the University of Uyo. Cronbach’s Alpha Statistical method was used to determine the reliability coefficient of .70 for the instrument. Two research questions and two null hypotheses tested at .05 level of significance guided the study. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer research questions; Independent t-test and Analysis of Variance were used to test the hypotheses. The results show that there is significant difference in involvement of university undergraduate students in Social Networking based on course of study, level (year) of study and age. Female undergraduate students’ involvement in social networking is higher than that of their male counterparts; but male undergraduate students showed a higher positive attitude towards integration of social networking into teaching and learning.</p>

This study aimed to show the extent of teenagers who represent students Tèbessa University contents of violence and crime that is seen or published or traded them through the media and communication affected, especially through social networking sites and networks, such as Facebook and stringing YouTube and Skype, etc., which may contribute to the formation and strengthening of behaviors negative in these through the following problem: Do you contribute to social networking sites through the implications of violence and crime in a negative impact on the behaviors of the students within the university community ?, also deliberately researcher to sample the estimated inventory of 50 students schooled at the Faculty of Economics and Commercial Sciences and Management Sciences of each section by an estimated 10% of the study population as a whole's (2000) the adoption of simple random sampling technique, the results have also been addressing the adoption system (SPSS) , Which resulted in the results: the presence of a statistically significant correlation between the students' use of social networking sites and the spread of deviant behavior within the university community?, And no statistically significant differences in the adverse effects of the use of social networking sites on the behavior of students depending on the sex variable, the largest of any female average for the benefit of, No statistically significant differences in the adverse effects of the use of social networking sites on the behavior of students depending on the variable physical level ?,No statistically significant differences in the adverse effects of the use of social networking sites on the behavior of the students due to the level of scientific student ?,The study also called attention to the recent media study the impact of the implications of violence and crime across social networking on the behavior of young people and adolescents sites, spreading awareness programs to help solve the problems of this phenomenon.

Engineering is about wealth creation for the comfort and well-being of human beings. In this context, the process and experiences associated with teaching and learning of engineering concepts are pivotal in sustaining and advancing the progress of modern day civilization. However, the teaching of aerospace engineering is not easy and fraught with difficulties, as the students have to be provided with the opportunity to develop their creative skills while retaining a professional and practical base. It is also important to proactively harness the available and emerging technologies to greater effect in the learning process. At the University of New South Wales in Australia, the authors have approached the teaching and learning in undergraduate aerospace engineering from a non-conventional perspective to prepare students to be creative and become practically oriented for productive employment in the very competitive world of today. They have been experimenting and refining what is generally known as the “advanced project design study concept” used in some aerospace industries and incorporated it as an integral component in aerospace engineering studies. In the process, the authors have blended conventional methods with flight simulation as methods of enquiry and investigation. The feedback, support, and encouragement that they have received from industries, the potential employers of students, have been very positive. This chapter outlines the basic philosophies behind the authors’ approach and the methodologies and technologies used in achieving the desired outcomes.

This study examined women in university management in Nigeria. It was a descriptive research of the survey type. The population of the study comprised all the public universities in southwest Nigeria, out of which three were selected through the stratified random sampling technique. Three hundred respondents who were in management positions were purposively sampled for this study. A questionnaire tagged Women in University Management Questionnaire (WUMQ) was used to elicit information from the respondents. Data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, t-test analysis and Pearson products for research questions and hypotheses raised for the study. Results showed that the level of women participating in university management in Nigerian University was dismally low; most of the high management positions were occupied by men. Results of the study further revealed that many women in the university system were being deprived of high management positions because they do not have the same opportunities for advancement as their male counterparts and also, the undue strictness of many women jeopardizes their chances of attaining high management positions in Nigerian universities. Based on these findings, it was recommended that the parochial belief of some people that women do not have what it takes to manage a university simply because they are women should be discarded. Women should also put a check on their undue strictness in the workplace and also, conducive working environments that will promote womens advancement should be promoted in Nigerian Universities.

The present study focuses on the use of Motivational Synergy as means to ameliorate the comprehension of ESL Learners at various campuses of the University of Education. The study is correlational. The survey method was adopted to carry out the research.  A convenient purposive sampling technique was used to collect the sample which is comprised of 100 public sector university students including 33% males and 67% females studying in the M.A. English program. This study focused on reading comprehension and listening comprehension. The results show that bottom-up training had a negative impact on comprehension. In contrast, top-down training positively affected fluency but had no impact on comprehension. Further, the results do suggest that fast-paced reading may potentially lead to improved comprehension. These findings have implications for the type of language instruction used in classrooms and, therefore, for teachers of adult ESL learners.
