Aim: to assess the prevalence and clinical functional features of asthenic accommodative asthenopia in patients with computer vision syndrome.Patients and Methods: 86 men (172 eyes) aged 24–36 years (mean age 28.6±1.4 years) were examined. Major inclusion criteria were occupational daily activities (at least 2 years) regarded as a visually intensive work related to electronic chart displays (at least 8 hours daily) with a high level of responsibility for a final result; complaints which are typical of accommodative asthenopia and evident of its subcompensation or decompensation; low myopia (SE <3.0 diopters) or emmetropia; no ocular disorders (excepting refractive errors).Results: the analysis of basic diagnostic criteria demonstrated that habitually excessive accommodation strain (HEAS) was diagnosed in 51 patients (59.3%) and asthenic accommodative asthenopia in 19 patients (22.1%). In 16 patients (18.6%), the parameters did not meet the criteria of the investigated types of asthenopia. The most typical accommodative disorders in asthenic accommodative asthenopia are the significant reduction of accomodogram growth parameters and the high-frequency component of accommodative microfluctuations. The reasons for these phenomena are asthenization and weak ciliary muscle. Additionally, patients with asthenic accommodative asthenopia were characterized by the lowest score of the quality of visual life and subjective psychophysiological status compared to HEAS patients and controls. Conclusion: asthenic accommodative asthenopia is characterized by specific clinical functional and diagnostic criteria identified by both conventional and modern methods of the examination of visual accommodative system. Abstract Breast imaging radiologists spend many hours seated at workstations and are therefore at high risk for repetitive strain injuries and computer vision syndrome. In addition, many perform hand-held sonography and image-guided procedures, which may present additional ergonomic challenges. In this article, we describe optimal ergonomics for breast imaging radiologists and discuss additional strategies to mitigate risks from work-related injury and improve overall physical well-being.

Background: The eye and vision related problems that results from continuous use of computers and other visual display terminals for extended period of time leads to computer vision syndrome. Due to rapid digitalization in human life, the risk of developing it has also increased in many folds. So, with an aim of determining the prevalence and level of awareness of computer vision syndrome among computer users along with their attitude and practices to prevent it, this study was conducted in the office employees who use computer for a considerable period of time. Materials and Methods: A hospital based observational descriptive study was conducted in the out-patient department of Ophthalmology in Nobel Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Biratnagar, where 105 employees working in different work stations of same institution were enrolled. A questionnaire and the clinical findings were used to collect data. Results: About 80% of the employees were using computer for about (8-11) hours per day. Prevalence of computer vision syndrome noted was (92.4%) with low level of knowledge (85.7%) about it. About 45% of them wore glasses for their refractive errors but attitude and practices in work place to prevent the bad effects of using visual display terminals were found to be lacking (53.3%). Burning sensation in the eye, headache, ocular irritation and itching and neck, shoulder or back pain were the common symptoms. Around (60-70)% of the eyes tested positive for dry eye. Conclusion: Lack of awareness of computer vision syndrome and lack of personal protective measures were associated with its high level of prevalence.

Nurses working in palliative care are at risk of burnout. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was used to determine burnout levels of nurses working in the Portuguese national network of palliative care. We evaluated the contribution of personal, work, and COVID-19 variables in three burnout subclasses: personal, work, and patient-related. A cross-sectional, exploratory, and quantitative design was employed and participants were sampled using convenience and snowball technique. An online survey was conducted and 153 nurses participated in our study. Socio-demographic characterization was conducted, levels of burnout and determinants were explored through multiple linear regression models for its three dimensions. High levels of personal, working, and patient burnout were present in 71 (46%), 68 (44%), and 33 nurses (22%), respectively. Most of them agreed that COVID-19 had an impact on their activities. Significant personal and work related burnout factors found were specialization in palliative care, self-perceived health status, unit type, weekly hours of work, and allocation to COVID-19 units. Gender was found to be a significant factor in patient-related burnout. There is a high level of burnout among nurses working in the Portuguese national network of palliative care. Measures for identification and mitigation of burnout are necessary to protect health care professionals.

This paper reports on a mask-type sensor for simultaneous pulse wave and respiration measurements and eye blink detection that uses only one sensing element. In the proposed sensor, a flexible air bag-shaped chamber whose inner pressure change can be measured by a microelectromechanical system-based piezoresistive cantilever was used as the sensing element. The air bag-shaped chamber is fabricated by wrapping a sponge pad with plastic film and polyimide tape. The polyimide tape has a hole to which the substrate with the piezoresistive cantilever adheres. By attaching the sensor device to a mask where it contacts the nose of the subject, the sensor can detect the pulses and eye blinks of the subject by detecting the vibration and displacement of the nose skin caused by these physiological parameters. Moreover, the respiration of the subject causes pressure changes in the space between the mask and the face of the subject as well as slight vibrations of the mask. Therefore, information about the respiration of the subject can be extracted from the sensor signal using either the low-frequency component (<1 Hz) or the high-frequency component (>100 Hz). This paper describes the sensor fabrication and provides demonstrations of the pulse wave and respiration measurements as well as eye blink detection using the fabricated sensor.

Purpose – At a time when the number and seriousness of disasters seems to be increasing, humanitarian organizations find that besides their challenging work they are faced with problems caused by a high level of turnover of staff. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Based on the 24 variables leading to employee turnover identified by Cotton and Tuttle (1986) the authors analyse the work-related, external and personal factors affecting employee turnover in humanitarian organizations, using a survey of members of the Indian National Institute of Disaster Management. Findings – Results indicated that the three factors are present. Of the external factors, only employment perception had a factor loading over 0.7; of the work-related factors, all were significant; of the personal factors, biographical information, marital status, number of dependants, aptitude and ability and intelligence had the highest loadings. It was also shown that behavioural intentions and net expectation were not significant. Originality/value – Only a few studies reported on employee turnover and its reasons are not well understood in the context of humanitarian organizations. To address this need, the aim of this paper is to explore the personal reasons impacting employee turnover in humanitarian organizations. In the study the authors have adopted 24 variables used in Cotton and Tuttle (1986) and classified into constructs to explain turnover, and further tested the model using data gathered from humanitarian organizations.

For improving quality of a carbon fiber reinforced composite material (CFRP) by preventing defects such as delamination and void, it should be inspected in fabrication process. Novel non-contacting evaluation technique is required because the transducer should be contacted on the CFRP in conventional ultrasonic technique during the non-destructive evaluation and these conventional contact techniques can not be applied in a novel fiber placement system. For the non-destructive evaluation of delamination in CFRP, various methods for the generation and reception of laser-generated ultrasound are applied using piezoelectric transducer, air-coupled transducer, wavelet transform technique etc. The high frequency component of laser-generated guided wave received with piezoelectric sensor disappeared after propagating through delamination region. Air-coupled transducer was tried to be adopted in reception of laser-generated guided wave generated by using linear slit array in order to generate high frequency guided wave with a frequency of 1.1 MHz. Nevertheless, it was failed to receive high frequency guided wave in using air-coupled transducer and linear slit array. Transmitted laser-generated ultrasonic wave was received on back-wall and its frequency was analyzed to establish inspecting technique to detect delamination by non-contact ultrasonic method. In a frequency spectrum analysis, intensity ratio of low frequency and center frequency was approvable parameter to detect delamination.
