Lipid Profile in Patients with Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis

Background: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory airways; its prevalence has increased worldwide. The disease may be associated with metabolic changes that could be either induced by treatment or may be due to inflammatory process. Aim: To clarify the status of lipid profile in Iraqi patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis. Patients and Methods: The study was performed on asthmatic patients (190), allergic rhinitis patients (110) and healthy control subjects (48). Age of subjects included were from 16-60 year, with a mean of 34.34 ±11.58 . At time of study inclusion, they all underwent full clinical examination after full history taking, pulmonary function tests, measuring body mass index and blood sampling. Results: Serum cholesterol was significantly higher in asthmatic with over weight (mean 219.93±60.02 mg/dl, P< 0.001), asthmatic with metabolic syndrome (mean 290.08±90.95 mg/dl, P<0.001), allergic rhinitis with overweight patients (mean 233.69±81.59mg/dl P< 0.001) than in control subjects (mean 145.95±36.52 mg/dl). It was of no significant difference in asthma with normal weight patients (mean 139.09±50.36 mg/dl, P-value 0.4291) and allergic rhinitis with normal weight patients (mean 155.81±49 mg/dl, P-value 0.2610) than in control subjects. Serum triglycerides was significantly higher in asthma with normal weight patients (mean 109.65±33.75 mg/dl, P-value 0.0123), asthma with over weight (mean 184.02±60.11 mg/dl, P<0.001), asthma with metabolic syndrome (mean 222.82±65.12 mg/dl, P<0.001) and allergic rhinitis with overweight patients (mean 173.62±54.27 mg/dl, P<0.001) than of control subjects (mean 92.63±35.37 mg/dl). It was of no significant difference in allergic rhinitis with normal weight patients (mean 101.56±36.29 mg/dl, P-value 0.2340) than of control subjects. High density lipoprotein-cholesterol was significantly lower in asthma with overweight group (mean 33.32±4.82 mg/dl, P<0.001), asthma with metabolic syndrome (mean 36.03±3.51 mg/dl, P<0.001), allergic rhinitis with over weight (mean 35.82±4.84mg/dl, P<0.001) than in control healthy group (mean 40.28±6.05mg/dl). It was of no significant difference between asthma with normal weight patients (mean 42.92±10.56 mg/dl, P-value 0.1215), allergic rhinitis with normal weight (mean 41.45±4.44 mg/dl, P-value 0.2600) than control subjects. Low density lipoprotein-cholesterol was significantly higher in asthma with over weight (mean 151.31±63.53 mg/dl. P<0.001); asthma with metabolic syndrome (mean 181.15±88.27 mg/dl, P<0.001); allergic rhinitis with normal weight (mean 108.42±38.05 mg/dl, P<0.01); allergic rhinitis with over weight (mean 163.49±80.92 mg/dl, P<0.001). It was significantly lower in asthma with normal weight patients (mean 68.76±32.66 mg/dl. P<0.05) than in control subjects (mean 85.84±39.39 mg/dl). Conclusion: Asthma and / or allergic rhinitis in Iraqi population were associated with dyslipidemia, whether in the presence of metabolic syndrome, or the patients were with normal or abnormal weight.

Abstract Objectives We aimed to evaluate the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS), its components and lipid profile in mid-pregnancy with preterm delivery and preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM).Methods This prospective cohort study was conducted on 203 pregnant women between 24-28 weeks of gestation, undergoing the gestational diabetes screening test with 50 gr glucose challenge test (GCT). Fasting serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high -density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglyceride (TG) levels were measured during the week after GCT assessment. Information on the participants' pre-pregnancy weight, demographic/ reproductive characteristics, and height and blood pressure (BP) measurements were documented at baseline entry into the study. Metabolic syndrome was defined as the co-existence of 3 or more of the following criteria: Body mass index (BMI) before pregnancy≥30 kg/m2, BP≥130/85 mmHg, GCT≥140mg/dl, TG≥150mg/dl, and HDL-C≤50mg/dl. All participants were followed through routine prenatal care, up to delivery. Any deliveries or rupture of membranes of less than or equal to weeks of pregnancy, were considered preterm delivery and PPROM respectively. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS V.20, and p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.Results MetS was detected in 10 (4.9%) of participants. Logistic regression analysis showed HDL-C levels, and hypertension had significant effects on preterm delivery occurrence [(OR: 0.952, 95%CI: 0.910_0.995), (OR: 1.629, 95% CI: 1.554_1.709) respectively], but no statistically significant results were found for PPROM.Conclusions Low HDL-C levels and hypertension in mid-pregnancy may increase the occurrence of preterm deliveries, indicating that MetS and its components should be monitored more closely in pregnancy.

Objective.Many studies have highlighted the hypolipidemic action of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). We investigated the effect of HCQ on the lipid profile of patients with Sjögren syndrome (SS).Methods.The present retrospective observational study included 71 female patients with SS treated with HCQ. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), and atherogenic index (TC/HDL) were measured at baseline, after 6 months, and 1, 3, and 5 years after initiation of HCQ treatment. Analysis to investigate changes over time was performed in the entire patient group and in the separate subgroups: those receiving (21 patients) and those not receiving (50 patients) hypolipidemic treatment.Results.For the entire group of patients a statistically significant decrease in TC was noted (levels before treatment 220 ± 41 mg/dl, and at 5 yrs 206 ± 32 mg/dl, p = 0.006). A statistically significant difference was observed in the levels of HDL (57 ± 14 mg/dl vs 67 ± 17 mg/dl, p < 0.001) and in atherogenic index (4.0 ± 1.3 vs 3.3 ± 0.9, p < 0.001). Patients not receiving a hypolipidemic agent during the same period demonstrated a decrease in TC (214 ± 40 mg/dl vs 208 ± 34 mg/dl, p = 0.049), an increase in HDL levels (55 ± 15 mg/dl vs 67 ± 18 mg/dl, p < 0.001), and a decrease in atherogenic index (4.0 ± 1.4 vs 3.3 ± 0.9, p < 0.001). In the subgroup of patients receiving hypolipidemic treatment, the respective changes in their lipid profile were not significant in the first years but became significant in the long term.Conclusion.Use of HCQ in patients with SS was related to a statistically significant decrease in TC, an increase in HDL, and improvement in the atherogenic index.

Hypertension is the most prevalent and treatable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Elevated levels of lipid in the blood also known as hyperlipideamia or dyslipidemia have been implicated in the development of atherosclerosis and most cardiovascular diseases including hypertension. This study was designed to evaluate the plasma level of lipid profile in mild and severe hypertensive patients with a view to provide information on the link between these parameters and the development and severity of hypertension. Blood samples were collected from 120 freshly diagnosed hypertensive patients consisting of 60 mild and 60 severe hypertensive patients at Wesley Guide Hospital of Obafemi Awolowo University teaching Hospital Ilesa Osun state and 60 relatively healthy subjects as control. Plasma level of lipid profile [namely High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC)] in the blood sample of both patients and control subjects were analyzed using standard methods. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis (p<0.05).The results of lipid profile in mild and severe hypertensive patients was compared to the control subjects. The results in mild hypertensive patients were also compared with the severe ones. There was a significant increase (P<0.05) in the plasma level of TC and LDLc in both mild and severe hypertensive patients when compared with the control subjects. Similarly a significant increase (p<0.05) was recorded in the plasma level of the both TC and LDLc in severe hypertensive patients when compared with mild hypertensive patients. However, the plasma level of HDLc in moderate and severe hypertensive patients was slightly lowered but not significant (p<0.05) while plasma TG level was not significantly different when compared with the control subjects. This study reveals a progressive increase in the plasma level of TC and LDLc from mild to severe hypertensive patients which could be a pointer to the fact that abnormalities in lipid metabolism might plays a significant role in the development and severity of hypertension.

ABSTRACT Introduction Obesity is emerging as an epidemic worldwide. Obesity is associated with a number of comorbid conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cancer, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular abnormalities, anemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and psychosocial abnormalities. Aim This study aims at comparing the lipid profile levels of obese and nonobese men. Materials and methods This was a case—control study conducted at a tertiary care center. Totally, 80 men in the age group of 20 to 47 years attending the master health checkup were included in the study, out of which 40 men with normal body mass index (BMI) of 18 to 25 belonged to group I and 40 men with increased BMI of 30 and above belonged to group II. Lipid profile parameters, such as triglycerides (TGLs), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were estimated in them. The data were statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 15.0. Results Statistically significant difference was found in the total cholesterol levels with a p-value of 0.040 while the difference in LDL cholesterol was statistically highly significant with a p-value of 0.040. Conclusion Among lipid profile parameters, only total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol showed significant difference between the obese and nonobese individuals. Background: Gallbladder disease is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases. Various studies have shown association between gallstone and alteration in serum lipids. The objective of this study was to evaluate histological patterns of cholecystectomy specimens and compare serum lipid profile of gallstone patients with controls.Methods: This study was conducted over a period of two years (April 2016 to April 2018). Records of 287 specimens who underwent cholecystectomy were analysed in which gallstones were found only in 186 patients. Out of 186 patients with gallstones, records of serum lipid profile were available in 32 patients which were compared with 32 control of similar age. Independent t- test was used to compare the data between cases and control.Results: Out of 287 cases, 68 were male and 219 were female with male to female ratio of 1:3.2. The predominant histopathological lesion was chronic cholecystitis (73.17%). Malignancy was observed in 0.7% cases. Serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were found to be higher and statistically significant in patients with gallstone compared to controls (p value 0.024, <0.001and 0.016 respectively). Serum High density lipoprotein cholesterol was lower in gallstone patient than in control but not statistically significant (p value 0.23).Conclusions: Chronic cholecystitis was the most common histopathological lesion. Serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotein cholesterol level were elevated and statistically significant in patients with gallstone.

Postmenopausal women tend to have significant changes in lipid profile when compared with premenopausal women. Incidence of cardiovascular disease after menopause believed to occur due to changes in the plasma lipid levels. This study was conducted to estimate and compare serum levels of total cholesterol(TC), triglycerides(TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) among Sudanese pre and postmenopausal women. 94 participant women were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. 47 post-menopause women age 48 - 70 years and 47 pre-menopause women age 25-47 years. Estimation of serum lipid profile was carried out using Biosystems colorimetric methods and results statistics were computed by using SPSS. A significant increase in total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride, and LDL-c with a significant decrease in (HDL-c) level among postmenopausal women where found, when compared with pre-menopause women (P-value= <0.05). Total cholesterol and LDL-C level were observed significantly increased according to three interval time duration of menopausal onset (p=0.009 and p=0.034). A positive correlation was observed between the age of and total cholesterol levels in postmenopausal women (R=0.463, P-value =0.001). Study results revealed that postmenopausal status was associated with substantial changes in lipid profile that considered risk factors for cardiovascular disease in Sudanese women.

Introduction: In haemodialysis patients, mortality from cardiovascular disease is much greater than in the general population. The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of two different types of heparin, low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) and high molecular weight heparin (HMWH), on lipid profile in patients undergoing haemodialysis.Material & Methods: A total of 60 patients on haemodialysis were selected from two main hospitals of Lahore, Pakistan and were divided into two major groups based on the type of heparin used. A 5 ml blood sample was taken from the dialysis machine to get the serum and was kept frozen at -20ºC for analysis of total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein. Comparison of lipoprotein lipase activity between groups were evaluated by using the student t-test. A P-value of ? 0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results: Gender wise distribution of study population (n=60) was 67% (n=40) males and 33% (n=20) females. The age distribution of individuals varied from 39-43 years. Moreover, use of HMWH was high in males (73%) as compared to female (27%) with an average age of 39 ± 12 years where duration of haemodialysis was 4.44 ± 2.83. A significant difference in LPL activity related to different times in all patients was observed. A clearer difference observed in case of LDL where LPL activity was markedly different in both groups. Our data showed that individuals using LMWH had less chances of dyslipidaemia as compared to those using HMWH.Conclusion: LMWH is a useful and safe anticoagulant during haemodialysis as compared to HMWH.

Abstract Background: Fatty liver disease is a common and major chronic liver disease. It has been implicated that patients have disorders of lipid metabolism and involved in the pathogenesis of fatty liver. Lipid profile plays a very important role in diagnosis of liver diseases hence it was designed to observe relationship between lipid profile and fatty liver disease (FLD) based on ultrasonography (USG).Method and methodology: This Cross-sectional and analytical study was undertaken in the Department of Internal Medicine with collaboration of Department of Radiology and Department of Biochemistry, Universal College of Medical Sciences-Teaching Hospital (UCMS-TH), Bhairahawa, Nepal from March 2019 to February 2020 in total 100 patients diagnosed with FLD by USG.Result: In 100 cases, the male to female ratio was 1.8:1. 56% of the total cases presented with alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) while remaining 44% with non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The spectrum of lipid abnormality was observed with increased total cholesterol (TC), Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), increased triglycerides (TG) and Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) in AFLD cases as compared to NAFLD cases. However, it has been observed that TG/HDL and Non-HDL/HDL were higher in NAFLD as compared to AFLD. There was statistical significant difference in HDL (p-value: 0.019) between alcoholic fatty liver disease grade 1 (AFLG1) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease grade 1 (NAFLG1). Moreover, it was observed statistical significant difference in HDL between AFLG2 and NAFLG2 (p-value: 0.012).Conclusion:Elevated level of TG and decreased HDL has been implicated in the precipitation of the occlusive vascular disease. These parameters in conjunction with Non-HDL/HDL and TG/HDL can be useful in early screening and monitoring of dyslipidemia in the fatty liver patients to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Objective: To compare lipid profile in patients with diabetic neuropathy and without neuropathy. Study Design: Cross-sectional comparative study. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out at Multidisciplinary Lab-1, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Army Medical College, from Jan 2020 to Sep 2020 in collaboration with Pak-Emirates Military Hospital, Rawalpindi. Methodology: Eighty-four subjects were selected and divided into three groups, twenty-eight in each. Group Iincluded diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with peripheral neuropathy, group II included diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus without peripheral neuropathy and group III consisted of healthy individuals. Biochemical parameters including total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 22.0. One way ANOVA test was used that followed by post-Hoc Tukey test for group comparison. Results: There was significant difference in triglycerides (p-value 0.001) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol(0.003) levels among group I and III. While, between group II and III significant difference of high density lipoprotein cholesterol was present. There was no significant difference between group I and II regarding all lipid profile parameters. Conclusion: There was significant increase of triglycerides levels and decrease of high density lipoproteincholesterol in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy as compared to healthy controls. No significantdifference was observed for all parameters of lipid profile between patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathyand without peripheral neuropathy.
