ABSTRACT Introduction Obesity is emerging as an epidemic worldwide. Obesity is associated with a number of comorbid conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cancer, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular abnormalities, anemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and psychosocial abnormalities. Aim This study aims at comparing the lipid profile levels of obese and nonobese men. Materials and methods This was a case—control study conducted at a tertiary care center. Totally, 80 men in the age group of 20 to 47 years attending the master health checkup were included in the study, out of which 40 men with normal body mass index (BMI) of 18 to 25 belonged to group I and 40 men with increased BMI of 30 and above belonged to group II. Lipid profile parameters, such as triglycerides (TGLs), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were estimated in them. The data were statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 15.0. Results Statistically significant difference was found in the total cholesterol levels with a p-value of 0.040 while the difference in LDL cholesterol was statistically highly significant with a p-value of 0.040. Conclusion Among lipid profile parameters, only total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol showed significant difference between the obese and nonobese individuals. Background: Nowadays, cardiovascular disease caused by hypercholesterolemia has become the main cause of death. Propolis has been used widely to reduce plasma cholesterol levels.Objective: The aims of this research was to study the effect of propolis on lipid profile of hypercholesterolemic Sprague Dawley rats.Method: This was an experimental study with pre-post test. Twenty four (24) male Sprague Dawley rats aged 12-16 week old, weighing 125-200 g were allocated into 4 groups. Group I received standard meal + aquadest-gavage; group II received high cholesterol meal + PTU 0,01 + aquadest gavage; group III received high cholesterol meal + PTU 0,01 + 0,027 g propolis gavage; group IV received high cholesterol meal + PTU 0,01 + 0,054 g propolis gavage. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels before and after treatment were measured. The data were then analyzed with One Way Anova.Results: The study showed that there were no significant differences in changes of body weight. There were significant differences in total cholesterol levels between all groups of treatment. Triglyceride levels were significantly different among all groups, except between group I and IV. Furthermore, the HDL cholesterol levels of group I vs III and group I vs IV were significantly different. However, there were no differences found in LDL cholesterol levels among all groups of treatment.Conclusion: Provision of 0,027 g and 0,054 g propolis improve lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels) of hypercholesterolemic rats.

In the body, liver produces approximately 80% of the cholesterol whereas rest of the cholesterol is obtained from the food like fish, eggs, meat, etc. After having a meal, cholesterol is digested and absorbed in small intestine then the metabolism and storage occurred in the liver. The cholesterol may be secreted by the liver whenever the requirement of cholesterol is needed by the body. Cholesterol is not present in the food which is derived from the plants. We in this study have compared hypolipidemic effects of Fenugreek, Curcuma longa, and Lemon. Study was conducted at Jinnah Hospital Lahore-Pakistan from January 2018 to May 2018. Ninety hyperlipidemic patients of age group 19 to 70 were included in the study. Exclusion criteria were diabetic, alcoholic additives, hypertensive patients and those whose kidney or liver functions were impaired. Consent was taken from all participants. Their base line lipid profile was taken in biochemistry laboratory of the hospital. They were divided in three groups i.e. 30 patients in each group. Group-I was advised to take 500 mg of Curcuma longa (haldi) mixed in fresh milk without cream, thrice daily for two months. Group-II patients were advised to take 100 grams of Fenugreek leaves mixed with salad in each meal (thrice daily) for the period of two months. Group-III patients were advised to take 40 ml of fresh lemon juice mixed with 40 ml mineral water thrice daily for two months. They all were advised not to take heavy meal rich with any type of fat like junk food etc. One hour daily brisk walk was advised to all participants. 15 days follow up visit was scheduled for them. After two months their lipid profile was redetermined. When results were compiled and statistically analyzed by applying paired ‘t’ test, it revealed that Curcuma longa decreased total cholesterol, TG, LDL cholesterol 16.10, 20.01, and 17.59 mg/dl respectively. Fenugreek decreased total cholesterol, TGs, and LDL cholesterol 14.70, 17.33, and 17.06 mg/dl respectively. Lemon in two months therapy decreased total cholesterol, TGs, and LDL cholesterol 15.45, 10.13, and 11.97 mg/dl respectively. None of the above mentioned herbs raised HDL cholesterol significantly. It was concluded from this research work that Curcuma longa, Fenugreek leaves and Lemon are mild to moderately effective hypolipidemic herbs to lower total plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol but have no potential to raise HDL cholesterol when analyzed biostatistically.

IntroductionPositive regulatory domain containing 16 (PRDM16) protein represents the key regulator of brown adipose tissue (BAT) development. It induces brown fat phenotype and represses white adipose tissue specific genes through the association with C-terminal binding co-repressor proteins (CtBP1 and CtBP2). In healthy adults presence of BAT has been associated with lower glucose, total cholesterol and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels. Our aim was to analyze the association of PRDM16 gene (rs12409277) and CtBP2 gene (rs1561589) polymorphisms with body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose level and lipid profile of adolescents.Material and methodsOur study included 295 healthy school children, 145 boys (49.2%) and 150 girls (50.8%), 15 years of age. Genotypes for the selected polymorphisms were detected by the real-time PCR method. Age, gender, height, weight, lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides) and fasting glucose levels were recorded.ResultsWe did not find a statistically significant association of rs12409277 and rs1561589 polymorphisms with BMI, fasting glucose and lipid profile of adolescents. We further analyzed the combined effect of the two SNPs and the statistical analysis showed that carriers of CT genotype of rs12409277 polymorphism and GG genotype of rs1561589 polymorphism had significantly lower total cholesterol (p = 0.001) and LDL cholesterol (p = 0.008) levels compared to all other groups of genotypes.ConclusionsOur study suggests that rs12409277 and rs1561589 polymorphism might have an influence on total and LDL cholesterol levels in adolescents. Larger studies should be performed in order to confirm our results.

Background. Abnormal lipid profile is an important risk factor in the development of macrovascular atherosclerotic complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Factors that contribute to endothelial cell dysfunction associated with the initiation of atherosclerosis include oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between lipid profile and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetics with and without ischemic heart disease (IHD). Methods. We studied 80 patients with T2D, 40 with IHD (group A1) and 40 without IHD (group A2). We also studied 51 non-diabetics, 31 with IHD (group B1), and 20 without IHD (group B2 - control group). Lipid profile was estimated by the total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, the level of triglyceride (Tg), lipoproteina a (Lp a), Apo A I, A II, B 100 and E. To evaluate the oxidative status we measured circulating oxidized LDL (ox LDL), erythrocyte antioxidative enzyme activity: superoxide dismutase (E-SOD), glutathione peroxidase (E-GPX), as well as the total antioxidative serum activity (TAS). Inflammatory reaction was estimated by C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen. Results. No significant difference was found in the lipid profile in groups A1, A2 and B1, but the group B2 had the lowest one. Lp a level was significantly higher in group B1 comparing to other groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the level of ox LDL between the groups. In diabetics, ox LDL positively correlated with the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, non HDL cholesterol, Apo B 100 and the relations between LDL/HDL and Tg/HDL (p < 0.001), as well as with Tg and fibrinogen (p < 0.05). In group B1, ox LDL positively correlated with total cholesterol, Tg (p < 0.01), LDL, and non HDL cholesterol (p < 0.05) and significantly with Apo B 100 (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the antioxidant enzyme activities between the groups of diabetics (A1 and A2), but fibrinogen was higher in the group with IHD (group A1, p < 0.05). Group B1 had lower ESOD activity than the groups A1 and A2 (p < 0.05), but CRP was higher (p < 0.05). There were no significant correlations between oxLDL and CRP in groups A1 and A2, but it was statistically significant in the group B1 (p < 0.05). Conclusion. In this study we demonstrated the increased oxidative stress in diabetics compared to non-diabetics regardless of the presence of IHD. Fibrinogen, but not CRP, was higher in diabetics with IHD, compared to diabetics without IHD. The increased oxidative stress, the reduced antioxidative activity E-SOD, and the higher level of CRP were found in non-diabetics with IHD compared to non-diabetics without IHD.

Objectives: Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is the most commonly used glycemic index among diabetic patients. The present study sought to investigate the relationship between HbA1c and lipid parameters among healthy pregnancies and gestational diabetic cases. Materials and Methods: Seventy-five Saudi pregnant women within the age group of 19 to 43 years were selected for this crosssectional study. The participants were categorized into with and without gestational diabetes (GDM), all of whom were non-smokers; in addition, they neither had a previous history of chronic illnesses nor were they on any medications which could alter lipid profile and HbA1c concentrations. Totally, 75 g of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was utilized to identify 25 women with GDM. All biochemical tests including HbA1c, fasting blood sugar (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-cholesterol), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-cholesterol) were performed by a biochemical auto-analyzer. The collected data were statistically analyzed using a paired student’s t test. The P values of <0.05 were considered statistically significant on all the analyses related to healthy pregnancies and those associated with GDM. Results: The HbA1c and FBG values demonstrated significant correlation with GDM (P<0.001 each). However, TC, LDL-cholesterol, and TG failed to indicate any significant difference between the 2 groups. Conversely, HDL-cholesterol and the ratio of TG and HDLcholesterol revealed remarkable differences between GDM and healthy participants (P<0.05 each). Conclusions: In general, the blood levels of glucose, HbA1c, TG, and HDL-cholesterol are of paramount significance in GDM. Predictably, HbA1c can be employed as one of the markers in evaluating the risk factors in developing dyslipidemia among pregnant women.

A prospective study was conducted in the Northern region of Bangladesh, to investigate the serum lipid profile viz the level of total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of hypertensive patients and compares them with levels of control subjects. The results revealed that serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol were significantly markedly raised (p>0.001) whereas the level of HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower (p>0.001) in hypertensive patients as compared to control subjects. No significant changes of serum lipid profile were found between male and female hypertensive patients, but in control subjects, markedly higher levels of serum lipid profile was observed in male compared to that of female. It was concluded that hypercholesterolaemia, hypertrigyceridaemia and low density lipoprotein are the main lipid abnormalities on the incidence of hypertension in the study area. Background & Objective: Obesity has become a serious health problem that has become increasingly important in recent years. Since patients with high levels of obesity have dyslipidemia and an unbalanced lipid profile, they have a high risk of both diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to evaluate the short (3 months) and long term (12 months) effects of mini-gastric bypass surgery from the current bariatric surgical techniques on the lipid profile. Methods: Of the patients undergoing Mini-gastric bypass operation between January 2016 to December 2018 at the General Surgery Clinic of Private Samsun Büyük Anadolu Hospital, demographic data and changes in lipid concentrations at 3 and 12 months were analyzed. Patients were grouped according to age, sex, body mass index (BMI), cardiologic risk groups, bypass lengths, and obesity classes. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol values of the patients were examined at the time of admission to the outpatient clinic before the operation, at the postoperative third month and at the post-operative twelfth-month. Patients who did not go for a checkup during the one-year follow-up and whose data could not be reached or missing were excluded from the study. Results: There was no significant difference in terms of age, sex, and cardiovascular risk (p>0.05). Although the HDL-C level was initially low (p<0.001), it significantly increased 12 months after surgical treatment (p<0.001). While serum concentrations of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were high preoperatively, they significantly decreased at 12 months postoperatively (p<0.001). When compared with values in the 3rd- and 12th-month, there was a significant decrease in the class-3 obesity group but not in the class-2 obesity group. When serum HDL cholesterol concentrations were compared with preoperative baseline and postoperative 12th-month those, no statistically-significant difference was found in serum concentrations in the 3rd month, although there was a significant increase in both class 2 and 3 obesity groups. Conclusion: In patients undergoing mini-gastric bypass surgery, serum LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations decreased in the 12th postoperative month, but serum HDL cholesterol concentrations increased. doi: https://doi.org/10.12669/pjms.37.7.4123 How to cite this:Guzel K, Ikizek M. Background: Objective was to study lipid profile in patients of subclinical hypothyroidism in tertiary centre in Kolkata, West Bengal and compare the same with matched controls.Methods: This observational study (single exposure) was conducted May 2019 to Nov 2019 at Department of Medicine, KPC Medical College, Jadavpur, Kolkata in subjects diagnosed with Sub Clinical Hypothyroidism [defined as normal T3 or FT3, normal T4 or FT4, and with increased TSH. Sixty patients with subclinical hypothyroidism were selected after careful exclusion; lipid profile was compared with matched controls.Results: Between the two groups (group I - controls vs. group II - cases), the values were as follows: Mean serum total T3 value was 114.03±29.22 ng/dl vs. 106.15±36.24 ng/dl (p = 0.3476); mean total T4 was 7.07±1.69 μg/dl vs. 6.86±1.31 μg/dl (p = 0.535); mean TSH was 3.17±1.28 μIU/ml vs. 9.77±4.19 μIU/ml (p <0.0001). Lipid profile pattern (group I vs. group II) was as follows: Mean total cholesterol (TC) 125.50±9.18 mg/dl vs. 162.07±42.32 mg/dl (p <0.0001), mean triglycerides (TG) is 136.65±14.82 mg/dl vs. 148.90±65.27 mg/dl (p = 0.3236), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol is 62.17±7.40 mg/dl vs. 98.81±33.26 mg/dl (p <0.0001), high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol 39.17±6.62 mg/dl vs. 34.27±9.63 mg/dl (p = 0.0702), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels are 34.54±15.38 mg/dl vs. 32.08±13.21 mg/dl (p = 0.5245)..Conclusions: Subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with increased serum total cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol levels. Therefore, there is a potential association between Subclinical hypothyroidism and atherosclerosis.

<p>ABSTRAK</p><p>Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) merupakan salah satu produk panganfungsional yang populer di masyarakat. Cita rasa VCO dapat diperkayadalam bentuk emulsi mengandung sari buah nenas. Penelitian inidilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh diet emulsi VCO terhadap profillipid tikus (Rattus norvegicus) yang sebelumnya diinduksi hiperlipidemiadengan lemak babi 180g/100g ransum dan kuning telur bebek dengandosis 4 ml/hari. Penelitian dilakukan bulan Januari sampai Desember 2009di Laboratorium Balai Penelitian Tanaman Kelapa dan Palma Lain(BALITKA), Laboratorium FMIPA Universitas Sam Ratulangi Manado,Laboratorium UPHP (Unit Penelitian Hewan Percobaan) UniversitasGadjah Mada Yogyakarta serta Laboratorium PAU IPB Bogor. Delapanbelas tikus dibagi secara acak ke dalam 3 kelompok (6 tikus perkelompok). Kelompok I adalah kelompok kontrol yang diberi akuades,kelompok II diberi diet emulsi VCO, dan kelompok III diberi diet VCOmurni. Kandungan kolesterol total, HDL, LDL, dan triasilgliserol diukursetelah akhir perlakuan dengan metode enzimatik. Kadar kolesterol totaldiukur menggunakan metode CHOD-PAP, kadar kolesterol LDLmenggunakan metode PVS, kadar kolesterol HDL menggunakan metodeCHOD-PAP dan kadar triasil gliserol menggunakan metode GPO-PAP.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa konsumsi 0,945ml/hari VCO dan3,78ml/hari emulsi VCO selama 7 hari dapat menurunkan kadar kolesteroltotal, kadar kolesterol LDL, serta meningkatkan kadar kolesterol HDLdarah tikus Wistar secara signifikan (=0,05), sedangkan penurunan kadartriasilgliserol hanya ditunjukkan oleh konsumsi emulsi VCO (=0,05).Dengan demikian, emulsi VCO yang diperkaya dengan sari buah nenasberperan lebih baik dari VCO murni dalam menurunkan kolesterol padahewan uji tikus.</p><p>Kata kunci: Virgin coconut oil (VCO), emulsi VCO, profil lemak</p><p>ABSTRACT</p><p>Effect of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) Emulsion Diet onLipid Profile of White Rats (Rattus norvegicus)</p><p>Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a functional food product that ispopular in the society. The contentof total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triacylglicerol were measured at theend of the treatment using enzymatic method. In this study, there weresome methods used for measurements: CHOD-PAP method for level oftotal cholesterol, PVS method for level of LDL cholesterol, CHOD-PAPmethod for level of HDL cholesterol, and GPO-PAP method for measuringlevel of triacylglicerol. The study results showed that diet of 0.945ml/daysof VCO and 3.78ml/days of VCO emulsion for 7 days significantlydecreased the level of total cholesterol and the level of LDL cholesterol,and increased the level of HDL cholesterol in the blood of Wistar mouse(α=0.05). Whereas it was shown that only by diet of VCO emulsion(α=0.05) decreased the level of triacylglicerol.
