Abstract Colourful zigzags, arcade game motifs, geometric figures, pseudo-frames of windows and even infantile drawings of flora and fauna – those are just some of the visible symptoms of the aesthetical and urbanistic chaotic condition also known as Polish pasteloza. One of the most common readings is that the excuse of thermal insulation is being (ab)used in order to radically erase the urbanistic, cultural and political heritage of Polish People’s Republic (PPR) from the city landscape. On the other hand, inhabitants of ‘pastelized’ housing estates claim to be satisfied not only with the insulation but also with their role in decision-making processes. A sense of alienation from one’s home seems to have gone away, together with the centralized state administration, and it is being replaced by citizen participation. The possibility of vindication of pasteloza’s ‘crimes against aesthetics’ will be deliberated in this paper – in order to pave a path for more complex understanding of this phenomenon that could offer a solution for achieving a compromise between aesthetics and civic participation in post-transition processes.

During more than six centuries of existence, Bacău benefited both from the favourable socio-economic and political context, and from the interrelationships with the other communities, from the harmonious combination of these two elements resulting both the growth and development of the locality and the position in the local and regional hierarchy. The main beneficiaries of the progress made were of course the inhabitants, the city representing a living environment for them, as well as the essential factor in the functional dynamics and in the urban landscape. Giving meaning to the past, we must recognize that each community that contributed to the development of Bacău has its own history, Bacău becoming the trustee of the communities ‘history entirety, which in perfect communion with Romanians defined the complex identity of the locality. The Jewish community is no exception, whose collaboration with Romanians for over two centuries has contributed to increasing the economic level of development of the locality since the second half of the 18th century.

- The article summarizes the results of a research conducted on the social policies change in Naples, particularly in Scampěa and in North Area of the city. This change saws the active involvement of the third sector organizations in the process of implementation of policies. The survey pays special attention to the process of welfare networking developed in the Area, although this involved a deep reconsideration, on the part of researchers, about the risks of contamination of the research as subject get closer. The involvement of an Association, among those most active in the area, while allowed more direct understanding of decision making, on the other hand became a strong pressure. Mediation among the scientific aims and those expressed by the Association led to a deviation of the original research design.Key words: social policies, suburbs, poverty, school dropout, voluntary, welfare

Abstract. The magical-religious role of Bengawan Solo (Solo River) in the establishment of Surakarta was crucial. It was related to mystical power, ghosts, or spirits of ancestors, especially those that reside at a confluence of two rivers. Belief in mystical power was the foundation of Javanese life, but not enough attention has been paid by historians as well as archaeologists. The aim of this research is to widen people’s insight about the belief of the Javanese people to the supernatural power and spirits that inhabited their dwelling places. Survey, phenomenology, and bibliographical study are the methods used to reveal more about the magical-religious role of the river. Results of the research are an understanding of the magical-religious role of Bengawan Solo in the establishment of Surakarta city as shown in the location of the city, which is close to the confluence of two rivers because such location is conceived as sacred, and the other is a belief to the Javanese cosmological concept that rivers are important to the establishment of city layout. It also proves that there is a continuity among the Javanese people who live around the Bengawan Solo from the past until nowadays.

„It was all there already, from the beginning” – Microcosms by Claudio Magris as a Triestineauto/bio/geographyAbstractThe aim of my article is to study the relation between the subject and the city, focusing on thecase of an autobiographic essayistic novel by a contemporary Italian writer Claudio Magris. The space of Trieste, author’s native city, plays a multiple role in the Microcosms narration. On one hand, it works as a “mnemotechnical pretext” for the protagonist’s sentimentaljourney into the past, both individual and collective. On the other hand, the city space canbe seen as an active factor, shaping the hero’s “triestine” state of mind and reflecting itself inthe novel’s poetics. In my analysis, I refer to some essential categories of geopoetics (“auto/bio/geography” by Elżbieta Rybicka, Tadeusz Sławek’s and Stefan Symotiuk’s interpretationsof genius loci), as well as to Walter Benjamin’s oeuvre, which I consider one of the mostimportant Microcosms’ intertexts. Keywords: Claudio Magris, Trieste, city, auto/bio/geography, space, genius loci

INTRODUCTION: The dengue fever remains to be a disease of serious public health concern, and its incidence has increased in the past decades. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological incidence of dengue in the period 2001-2010. METHODS: This is an epidemiological study of dengue in the municipality of Aracaju, state of Sergipe, in the period between 2001 and 2010, whose data were obtained from the Information System of Diseases Notifications. A descriptive analysis of the number of confirmed cases of dengue, according to year, semester, sanitary district, age, and sex, was performed. RESULTS: There were 16,462 confirmed cases, especially in 2008, which obtained the highest incidence of the disease, with 10,485 confirmed cases. The first semester obtained the highest registration of cases during the years of research; this was predominated by females between 15 and 49 years old. With regard to the territorial distribution, the second district of the municipality obtained the highest number of cases. CONCLUSIONS: In 2008, in the City of Aracaju, SE, a significant increase in the proportion of dengue cases compared with other years was verified. However, a fast decline in the other years was observed, possibly because of the intensification of preventive actions to combat the mosquito that transmits the dengue virus.

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a powerful tool for evaluating and improving the performance of a set of decision-making units (DMUs). Empirically, there are usually many DMUs exhibiting “efficient” status in multi-input multioutput situations. However, it is not appropriate to assert that all efficient DMUs have equivalent performances. Actually, a DMU can be evaluated to be efficient as long as it performs best in a single dimension. This paper argues that an efficient DMU of a particular input-output proportion has its own specialty and may also perform poorly in some dimensions. Two DEA-based approaches are proposed to measure the dimension-specific efficiency of DMUs. One is measuring efficiency in multiplier-form by further processing the original multiplier DEA model. The other is calculating efficiency in envelopment-form by comparing with an ideal DMU. The proposed approaches are applied to 26 supermarkets in the city of Nanjing, China, which have provided new insights on efficiency for the managers.

The demand for parking services is not a constant one, but rather varies from minimum to maximum. The range between the maximum and minimum demands and the dynamics of changes are the basic factor influencing the required size of the parking area capacity and the respective financial effects. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that the queuing theory can be implemented in defining the optimal number of serving places (ramps) and the required capacity (number of parking spaces) in controlled access parking areas and that the established model can serve in business decision-making in respect to planning and development of the parking area capacity. The presented model has been verified in the example of the “Delta” parking area in the City of Rijeka but this model is particularly valuable as it can be implemented in any controlled access parking areas, i.e., parking areas with toll-bars under current or any other changed future conditions. KEY WORDS: planning of parking area capacities, optimal parking area capacity, queuing theory, parking area as a queuing system

Over the past years, we have seen a rise in political mobilisations in EUrope and elsewhere, by and in solidarity with migrant newcomers. This article focuses on specific examples of what we conceptualise as transversal solidarities by and with migrants, and rooted in the city, the focus of this special issue. The examples we explore in this article include: Trampoline House, a civil society organisation which provides a home to migrant newcomers in Copenhagen; Queer Base, an activist organisation in Vienna providing support for LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer) migrants; and finally, the Palermo Charter Process, a coalition of diverse groups seeking to create open harbours and ‘corridors of solidarity’, from the Mediterranean to cities throughout EUrope. While these examples are situated in and across different urban spaces, they share a common grounding in building solidarity through spaces of encounters related to ideas of home, community, and harbour. By exploring these distinct solidarity initiatives in tandem, we examine, on the one hand, how the production of spaces of encounters is linked to building transversal solidarities and, on the other, how transversal solidarities also connect different spaces of solidarity across different political scales.
