THINK-PAIR-SHARE STRATEGY TO IMPROVE THE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY

This research aims to determine whether using Think-Pair-Share strategy can improve speaking ability of students in SMP Negeri 3 Luwuk. It applied a quasi-experimental research using non-equivalent design. The research populations were the eighth grade of students in SMP Negeri 3 Luwuk and the sample of the research were class VIII A as the experimental class and class VIII B as the control class. The research instrument used a test which was divided into two parts, namely pre-test and post-test. Data were analyzed statistically. After being analyzed, the result showed that there was a significant improvement in students’ speaking ability in using Think-Pair-Share strategy. In the experimental class, the mean score in pre-test was 46.3 while in the post-test was 81.2. In the control class, the mean score in pre-test was 45.8 while in the post test was 61.6. From the calculation in t-counted was higher that t-table. The result in t-counted was 14.984 while the t-table in the degree of significance 0.05 was 1.667. If the value of t-counted > t-table, it means that Ha is accepted and HΟ is rejected. In other words, the alternative hypothesis is proven. From the result of the research showed that there was a significant improvement in students’ speaking ability in using Think-Pair-Share strategy.

Testing, Demonstrating, Practicing and Revising (TDPR) technique is a technique which includes testing, demonstrating, practicing and revising activities to know and improve the students’ pronunciation ability. Deriving from the importance of pronunciation, the main purpose of the current study is to investigate the use of Testing, Demonstrating, Practicing and Revising (TDPR) technique to improve the students’ ability in pronouncing plosive consonants. Based on the purpose of the study, a series of classroom activities with TDPR technique was done. In gathering the data, the researcher applied a quasi-experimental research method. Pre-test and post-test were distributed to 72 students of SMKN 1 Praya Tengah. The result of the study has revealed that there was a significant difference between the mean of pre-test and the post-test, t-test 5.10 ˃ t-table 1.994, it means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected meanwhile alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It proved that the TDPR technique can improve students’ ability in pronouncing plosive consonants.

The purpose of this research is to determine whether using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) can improve students’ ability to write descriptive texts at SMPN 6 Toili Barat. This research uses quasi-experimental research that requires a post-test for both groups. The research population was eighth grade students of SMP 6 Toili Barat. The sample of this research was class VIII A as an experimental class and consisted of 26 students while class VIII B was a control class and consisted of 27 students. The test consisted of pre-test and post-test. Data were analyzed statistically. After being analyzed, the result of t-counted was 6,744 with a degree of freedom 51, and a significance level of 0,05, t-table was 1,675. Therefore, the t-test result is higher than the t-table. It means that the hypothesis of this research can be accepted. The result showed that there was a significant influence in using Numbered Heads Together to improve students’ writing abilities in descriptive text in eighth grade at SMPN 6 Toili Barat Keywords:Improving; Writing; Descriptive Text; NHT.

This study was conducted to know the effect of applying Peer Review Strategy on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. It was conducted by using experimental research method. This research design was conducted pre-test, post test in experimental and control group. The population of this research was the eight (VIII) grade students of SMP IT IQRA’ Medan. The sample of this research was taken by lottery technique. They were in class VIII-1 by experimental group and the class VIII-2 by control group. The experimental group was taught by using Peer Review Strategy while the control group was given no treatment. The instrument used to collect the data was writing essay test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showed that the value of t-observed was higher than the value of t-table. (3,55 > 2,05 (a = 0.05)) with the degree of freedom (df) = 28. It means that there was a significant effect of applying Peer Review Strategy on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.

Based on the explanation of the theory by Gardner the state is motivation comes from within a person as a driving force to achieve goals for more advanced change. This study aims to determine how enthusiastic student's Eighth grade in the SMPN 03 Bengkulu Tengah are in learning English, especially speaking English. Researchers used a quasi-experimental research method, namely a control group posttest only design which showed a significant difference between 74, 92%, and 61.96% of the experimental class in the control class. From this hypothesis, the researcher obtained a comparison of the experimental class in the treatment using the storytelling method of 4.34% and the control class with the narrative picture method of 3.58%. So the researcher can conclude that there is a significant difference between the two methods with or without the use of treatment compared to the motivation to learn English in class VIII students at SMPN 03 Bengkulu Tengah.

This thesis is purposed at proving the effectiveness of cartoon videos in teaching speaking to the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 2 Rantau Kalimantan Selatan in academic year of 2013/2014, and showing that there is a significant difference in speaking ability between the students who were taught by using cartoon videos and those who were taught by using conventional method. This study is an experimental research. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Rantau Kalimantan Selatan in academic year of 2013/2014 which consisted of seven classes. The total number of population was 158. There were two classes taken as the sample, Class VIII B serving as control class were taught by using conventional method, while class VIII F as the experimental class were taught by using cartoon videos. Class VIII B consisted of 22 students and class VIII F consisted of 22 students. Both classes were given the pre-test at the beginning and the post-test at the end after the treatment. The data were collected by using speaking test. The data were analyzed by using t-test computation, descriptive analysis, and inferential analysis. The research findings show that there is a significant difference in students’ speaking ability between the experimental group taught by using cartoon videos and those who were taught by using conventional method. The result of the pre-test shows that both groups are poor, while the post-test result shows that the experiment group is better than the control one. The mean score of the experimental class in pre-test was 42.50 and that of control class was 42.73. The mean score in post-test of the experimental class was 75.68 and that of the control class was 57.50. It can be seen that the mean score of the experimental class was higher than that of control class in post-test. Furthermore, based on the hypothesis testing, it could be seen that the value of -t obtained (-5.245) < - t table (-2.018), at the significant level 5%. This implied that there is a significant difference of students’ speaking ability between the students who were taught by using cartoon videos and those who were taught by using conventional method.

This research aimed to investigate whether Scrabble game has a significant effect on the eighth graders’ vocabulary mastery. This research was carried out by using experimental research method with one group pretest-posttest design. The eighth graders of class VIII-A were taught vocabularies using Scrabble game. The quantitative data, collected using tests, were analyzed by using the independent and paired sample t-test on SPSS version 19 program. The findings on this research showed the mean scores of pre-test and post-test, which were, 52.40 points and 45.64 respectively; the gain was -6.76 points and the result of hypothesis test, it was found that t count (1.569) was less than t table (2.06). The findings indicated that H0 was accepted. The conclusion of this research was Scrabble had no significant effect on the eighth graders’ vocabulary mastery.

This research aims at finding out whether or not EGRA method can improve students� mastery of passive voice in one of Public Senior High Schools in Kuningan. A quasi-experimental design was employed in this research to test the objective theories by examining the relationship between two variables. Pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire were used to collect the data. The data were then analyzed by using SPSS 20.0. Before conducting pre- and post-test, the tests were tried out to check its validity and reliability. From 60 items, it was found that 40 items were valid and reliable because the items� correlation coefficient (rxy) were higher than rtable and their Cronbach Alpha were higher than 0.07, so the researcher used them as pretest and posttest instruments. The t-test result was 0.000 which means that it was lower than 0.05 (0.000<0.05) so that the null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. Then, the mean score of pre-test and post-test in experimental group were significantly different (55.77 up to 81.79). To confirm the result of this research, questionnaires were used. From the questionnaire, it was found that in affective aspects, 58.9%, 64.1% and 53.8% of the students agreed with the use of EGRA method. In behavioral aspects, 33.3%, 56.4% and 43.5% of the students agreed with the use of EGRA method. While in cognitive aspects, 56.4%, 56.4%, 51.2% and 58.9% of the students agreed with the use of EGRA method. So, it can be concluded that EGRA method can improve students� mastery of passive voice.Keywords: EGRA method, passive voice, students

The aim of this research was to find out whether jumbled texts have any effects towards students’ ability in writing. This study was experiments research and used pre-test and post-test non-equivalent group design of quasi experimental design. The population of this study was all students of the second grade at SMPN 3 Tanjung and the sample was two classes which consisted of 22 students of each class. To analyze the data this study used descriptive statistic and inferential statistic. The finding of this research showed that the t-test was 3,416 > t-table 1, 682. The mean score of experimental and control group was 760>60,59. It can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected and jumbled texts was effective toward students’ ability in writing.Keywords: Jumbled Texts, Ability, Writing

The purpose of this research was to find out whether or not it is significantly effective to teach reading comprehension by using Predict, Locate, Add Note strategy to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau in the academic year of 2016/2017. The researcher used pre experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was all the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau which consisted of 440 students. The sample was taken through cluster random sampling. The sample was 40 students. The data was collected through test consisted of 20 items of multiple choices. The data were analyzed through four techniques: 1) students’ individual score, 2) minimum mastery criteria, 3) normality, and 4) matched t-test calculation. The result of this research: (1) the mean students’ score in the pre-test was 62.3, (2) The mean score of post-test was 77.3, and (3) the result of Matched t-test was 10.86, which was higher than 1.684 value of the t-table of 39 (40-1) with 95% significant level for one tailed-test. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that it was significantly effective to teach reading comprehension by using Predict, Locate, Add Note Strategy to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau in academic year of 2016/2017.

This research intended to explain the factors of students’ problems at eighth grade of SMP NU Al-Hidayah Maduran on English writing. It aimed to investigate the effect of POEW (Predict, Observe, Explain, Write) strategy used on English writing to enhance student’s English writing skill. In addition, it elaborated the significant after using POEW strategy on student’s narrative English writing. This research conducted using a quantitative design a quasi experimental research by two classes of pre-test and post-test. The researchers implemented this research to eighth grade of SMP NU Al Hidayah Maduran in academic year of 2021/2022. The participants of this study taken from eighth grade of SMP NU Al-Hidayah Maduran, which consisted of two classes and devided by experimental class and control class. It was found from the result of the test that students in experimental class got higher score than students in control class. However, based on the normality testing, this research was not normally distributed. In addition, the data declared that this research was not homogeneous. Thus, the researchers did Mann Whitney U Test. Relating to the test, the result of Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) was smaller than the probability (0.000<0.05). It meant that Ha was accepted. However, it can be concluded that there was an effect of the use POEW strategy at eighth grade of SMP NU Al-Hidayah Maduran on English writing skill.
