Based on the work of Hofstede, Trompenaars, Lewis, and Rapaille, the founders of the theory of national business cultures and comparative economic studies, the characteristics of corresponding scientific areas are identified: cross-cultural management, cross-cultural communications, and cross-cultural marketing, including their methodological and practical aspects. Using the classic measuring parameters of national business cultures (“Individualism,” “Power Distance,” “Masculinity,” “Uncertainty Avoidance,” “Long-Term Orientation,” “Indulgence”), a comparative analysis is carried out on the example of Poland, Ukraine, Germany, France, and Hungary; the results of the authors’ own development of this interdisciplinary problem are presented. On this basis, new approaches are proposed in establishing mutually beneficial international cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian enterprises, not only in Europe but also in other regions of the world.

TitleChanging business culture: theory and practice in typical emerging markets.Subject areaOrganizational behavior, human resources, culture, international business, international entrepreneurship and emerging market studies.Study level/applicabilityMBA and MSc students (and some advanced‐level undergraduates) in an MBA module being taught face‐to‐face in an emerging market context. MBA courses such as managing cultural diversity, cross‐cultural management, organizational behavior, human resource management, international business and business in emerging markets. The exercise is also relevant to teaching the subject of assignment‐ and dissertation‐writing, given the element of data collection and analysis.Case overviewThis exercise is designed to be an MBA class exercise in which students try to answer the question: what are the national cultural characteristics of the typical executive or manager in my country? Are these behaviors as the textbooks describe, or have they changed, especially with economic development? The example of country chosen for the class exercise can be any emerging market country, especially one undergoing significant change. Much of the research on cross‐cultural management conducted in emerging markets was carried out 20 or 30 years ago and the changes in emerging markets have been dramatic since then. It is highly likely, when reaching the results of this exercise, that the culture of the chosen country has indeed changed dramatically, becoming more like a typical developed or “emerged” country. Much of the original cross‐cultural management research was also based on a similar group – employees of US‐based high technology companies, arguably similar to the sample to be involved in our exercise here.Expected learning outcomesNational cultural characteristics can be described and defined in ways which will allow for comparisons, to gain useful insights – and these behaviors are not good or bad, just real and different. Cultures can change or stay the same, due to certain demographic, economic and social influences, which we can study and measure. If we proactively interview colleagues and other contacts to test our understanding of these national culture constructs, we can gain more insights and awareness (rather than just listening to a lecture).Supplementary materialsTeaching notes, student assignment.

Over the last century, anthropologists have created a discipline to make sense out of human behavior through the culture concept, a holistic approach, and empirical research. Although anthropological concepts have been defined largely in academia, the discipline has always had "applied" practitioners working in areas like health care, education, business, marketing, and industry. These practitioners have demonstrated time and again that an anthropological approach has a great deal to offer the business world, particularly in cross-cultural marketing [cf. Giovannini, M.J. and Rosansky, L. M. H., Anthropology and Management Consulting: Forging a New Alliance. The American Anthropological Association 1990; Hamada, T. and Jordan A. (eds.), Cross-Cultural Management and Organizational Culture, Williamsburg, Virginia: College of William and Mary. 1990.]

Abstract Academic research regarding cross-cultural management has gained fundamental importance in today’s globalised business world. Within this field, this paper examines cultural synergy and friction of Austrian and Korean business culture. Austrian companies have a high export orientation and have shown strong interest in doing business with Korea, which has been identified as an exceptionally attractive location for subsidiaries of foreign MNEs. Applying the Analytical Hierarchy Process, Korean employees in Korean subsidiaries of Austrian companies were surveyed regarding their satisfaction levels in different job aspects as well as their preferences regarding alternatives in the criteria leadership style, work teams, and tasks and responsibilities. The study found synergy between the preferences of Korean employees and Austrian management in the importance placed on challenging projects and chances for personal achievements at work, as well as the lack of desire for close personal relations with superiors and colleagues. The latter represents a unique finding, contrary to what had been suggested by the relevant literature. Additionally, the research found areas of cultural friction regarding the importance assigned to consultative decision-making, a relaxed use of time, and freedom when performing work tasks. Overall good satisfaction levels of Korean employees in the subsidiaries were reported.
