Sebanyak 25 sampel sedimen dasar laut dari Teluk Bone bagian utara, Sulawesi Selatan telah digunakan untuk analisis foraminifera dalam kaitannya dengan jenis sedimen dan kedalaman. Hasil analisis diperoleh 97 spesies foraminifera bentik dan beberapa genera diantaranya mendominasi titik lokasi tertentu, seperti Amphistegina, Operculina, Heterolepa, Brizalina, Elphidium dan Quinqueloculina.Setiap genus mempunyai distribusi spasial tertentu sesuai habitatnya dengan beberapa anomali. Kisaran kedalaman daerah penelitian antara 23 dan 85 m dicirikan oleh kehadiran Amphistegina, Cibicides, Rotalia, Cavarotalia. Dalam kaitannya dengan kedalaman, sebaran foraminifera cenderung terakumulasi di sebelah timur daerah penelitian. Setiap satuan sedimen dicirikan oleh genus foraminifera tertentu. Kata kunci: foraminifera, distribusi spasial, kedalaman laut, jenis sedimen, Teluk Bone, Sulawesi Selatan A total of twenty five surface sediment samples from the northern part of Bone Bay, South Sulawesi were selected for foraminiferal study. The purpose of this study is to recognize spatial distribution foraminifera in relation with water depth and sediment types. There are 97 identified species, some ot them are dominant at certain sites, such as Amphistegina, Operculina, Heterolepa, Brizalina, Elphidium and Quinqueloculina. Each genus has certain spatial distribution as its habitat with some anomalies. The range of water depth is between 23 and 85 m that characterized by Amphistegina, Cibicides, Rotalia, Cavarotalia. In relation to water depth, the distribution of foraminifera tends to accumulate in the eastern part of the study area. Sediment unit is characterized by certain foraminifera genus. The spatial distribution of sediments in the continental shelf, their granulometry (phi) and composition (content of calcium carbonate, CaCO3) is described, taking into account the localization (depth, latitude and longitude) to explain their source and distribution and to establish their relationship with the more productive areas in the northern Colombian Caribbean region. Sediment samples were collected in 68 stations during two surveys carried out in December 2005 and February 2006. Granulometry was determined with sieving separation method and medium grains values of sediment (PHI = F) were calculated. Additionally calcium carbonate (CaCO3) contents were determined. Cluster analysis was performed to characterize groups of similar stations in terms of sediment types and sediment type maps were made using geostatistical techniques. Analysis of relationship between sediment types, according to their PHI, with depth, latitude and longitude, and CaCO3 content with sediment types and depth, was made with Generalized Additive Models (GAM). According to spatial distribution of sediments was possible characterize three sectors in agreement with the values of PHI: 1) from Río Buritaca to Río Camarones with fine sands and muds, 2) from Riohacha to Cabo de la Vela with very coarse sands and sands, 3) from Cabo de la Vela to Puerto Estrella with fine sands and muds.

This research describes the floristic composition and spatial distribution of the main mangroves species and other associated flora present in the estuarine sector of Térraba-Sierpe National Wetland, Costa Rican Pacific. Field survey consists of 1 127 points and 77 sampling points of 60x10m. Results of composition, structure and distribution of mangrove in HNTS exhibits a pattern or species zonation. We found variation from the coast to mainland and from the fringe or estuaries to the interior tidal flats. The species Rhizophora racemosa and Pelliciera rhizophorae showed greater spatial and continuous distribution, with the highest values of abundance (45.44% and 39.92% respectively), frequency (88.31% and 74.03%) and mangrove area (7 670.73ha and 5 824.94ha). The mangrove fern, Acrostichum aureum, was the third most important species, meanwhile, Avicennia spp., Rhizophora mangle y Laguncularia racemosa showed a segregated distribution or a tendency to local conglomeration, Talipariti tiliaceum var. pernambucense, Mora oleifera y Conocarpus erectus were found in very localized areas and other species were considered companions with low contribution to the total coverage. The dependence was confirmed between the presence of mangrove species and sediment type substrate. The species Avicennia spp. and L. racemosa tend to be distributed in sandy substrates more easily than the other species whose distribution is more homogeneous on muddy substrates

The distribution of foraminifera is influenced by several environmental factors such as depth, sediment type, chemical and physical oceanographic paramaters, and season. The aim of the study was to determine the foraminiferal assemblages and their relationship to physical and chemical parameters in the offshore of Balikpapan waters of Makassar Strait such as depth, temperature, currents, sediment types, and salinity. Surface sediment, physical, and chemical parameters sampling was conducted in April 2012. The results of the observations on the sediment samples recognized planktonic foraminifera in 6 genera and 40 genera of benthic foraminifera from the 6 stations. Biodiversity of planktonic foraminifera was categorized in a low category with a range of 0.198-0.525. However, biodiversity for benthic foraminifera was categorized in a high category with a range of 0.811-0.925. Dominance of planktonic foraminifera was medium to high with range of 0.474-0.802 which was assumed due to the sampling sites as an open waters. Meanwhile, dominance for benthic foraminifera was in a low category with range of 0.075-0.189. The most common planktonic foraminifera was found from Genus Globigerina (10538 individuals). While, the most abundant of benthic foraminifera was found from Genus Amphistegina (3134 individuals).  Keywords: abundance, foraminifera, sediment, and Makassar Strait

Perairan Aceh termasuk Pulau Weh, Pulau Breuh dan Pulau Penasi merupakan area terluar di sisi barat Kepulauan Indonesia yang menghadap ke Samudera Hindia. Wilayah ini sangat menarik bagi para peneliti terutama setelah kejadian tsunami pada tahun 2004. Tujuan dari penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui distribusi foraminifera sebagai organisme yang sensitif terhadap perubahan lingkungan. Sebanyak 32 contoh sedimen diambil pada kedalaman 7- 170 meter dan terpilih 11 contoh untuk studi foraminifera. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 45 spesies foraminifera bentik yang sangat berlimpah, terdiri atas 28 spesies anggota Subordo Rotaliina, Miliolina (7 spesies) dan Textulariina (10 spesies). Amphistegina papilosa dijumpai dalam jumlah sangat berlimpah dan tersebar merata yang memberi indikasi kondisi lingkungan terumbu karang baik. Ammonia tepida sangat dominan (47%) di sebelah utara Pulau Weh (S30) dibandingkan dengan spesies lain. Di bagian Timur Pulau Penasi, ditemukan cangkang foraminifera dalam kondisi rusak dalam jumlah berlimpah yang dapat dikaitkan dengan arus kuat di lokasi ini. Kata kunci : foraminifera bentik, distribusi, perairan Aceh The Aceh waters including Weh, Breuh and Penasi islands are the outer parts of northwestern Indonesia that facing the Indian Ocean. This area is interested for many scientists especially after tsunami in 2004. The purpose of this study is to establish the distribution of benthic foraminifera as a sensitive indicator of environmental changes. Thirty two (32) surface sediment samples were collected at the water depth of 7-170 m and eleven samples were selected for foraminiferal study. The results show 45 species of benthic foraminifera very abundantly and consists of 28 species belong to Suborder Rotaliina, Miliolina (7 species) and Textularia (10 species). Amphistegina papilosa is found abundantly and widely distribution that provide an indication of good reef environments. Ammonia tepida is very dominant(47%) in the northern part of Weh island compared with other species. Abnormal shells of foraminifera were found abundantly in the eastern part of Penasi Island that related to strong current in this area. Keywords: benthic foraminifera, distribution, Aceh waters

Isopoll maps based on 173 modern-pollen samples illustrate the geographical patterns of 12 pollen types within a 600,000 sq. km area centered in southern Québec. The mapped patterns reflect several scales of vegetational pattern that ranges from the major regional change between conifer-hardwood forest and boreal forest down to the minor local differences in vegetation between nearby sites. Picea and other arboreal pollen types are most representative of the regional patterns, whereas Cyperaceae and Ericaceae pollen often vary markedly between adjacent sites. Further analysis of these pollen data explored how much differences in sediment type and variations in analyst practices among the samples can affect the sensitivity of the pollen data to certain of the vegetational patterns. The set of 173 samples was divided into three subsets, two of which differ in sediment types and two of which differ in analyst practices. The distributions of pollen types are then correlated between the contrasting subsets, and their principal components are compared. These results show that only small differences exist among the subsets in their portrayal of the major vegetational patterns, but marked differences appear in the record of certain minor patterns.

AbstractAn extensive data set of macrozoobenthos from the eastern North Sea was evaluated in order to describe the distribution of infaunal species with respect to water depth and median grain size of the sediment. The resulting data are presented for 134 species, in 104 species abundance correlated significantly with water depth, with most species decreasing in abundance towards the hydrographically turbulent shallow areas. This suggests hydrography is a limiting factor for most of the species in this area while very few species only seem to favour the turbulent side of the gradient. With respect to median grain size, two thirds of the species showed significant abundance variations and one third did not. Most of the latter species were either represented by rather poor data or are known to be highly motile. Thus, true sediment generalists seem to be few. Conversely, no species was exclusively restricted to a single sediment type. Significant depth × sediment type interaction terms in a regression model indicate that abundance distribution over sediment types varied with depth level in 60% of the species, indicating that these populations were restricted to a part of their species-specific tolerated ranges in the study area. Hence, the distributional patterns over water depth and sediment types shown here represent realised niches. These data may help to locate populations and, in the light of global change, may serve as a baseline for future comparisons.

Abstract Surface sediment samples obtained at the offshore and nearshore area of Lake Erie were separated into eight different size fractions ranging from &lt;2 µm to 250 µm. The concentration of major elements (Si, Al, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Mn and P), metals (Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, V, Co and Pb) and organic matter was determined together with the mineralogical composition and morphology of the particles in each size fraction. The distribution of the metals in the offshore sediment was bimodal with the majority of the metals divided between the 63 to 250 um size fraction which also contained the highest concentration of organic matter (about 20%) and the &lt;4 µm fraction containing up to 60% of clay minerals. However, the metals in the nearshore sediment were associated mainly with the clay minerals.
