AbstractThe research aims at analyzing semester 1 students’ average abilities of Business Administration Department State Polytechnic of Jakarta in writing expository text in English 1 subject through error analysis approach. The data is then measured by the following standard English grammar books—Harbrace College Handbook (1977), Common Mistakes in English (1982), dan A Practical English Grammar (1982). By qualitative analysis, the research found out that: (1) students made mistakes in verb agreement with the subject and forgot verb/be to fill the predicate slot, (2) students opened a sentence with number or/and sometimes with conjunction, (3) students also forgot to use capital letter to begin a new sentence, as a name of an object, and also made mistakes in noun pluralization, (4) students also still did not know how to make derivational words and how to make noun phrase, and (5) students also did not aware of the function and meaning of the mechanic of writing such as full stop, comma, and semicolon in a sentence construction. Beside that, students came from vocational secondary schools had better writing skill than students from secondary schools; and hence female students proved to have better abilities in English writing skill than the male counterparts.Keywords: error analysis, expository text, final test, writing skillAbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis kemampuan mahasiswa dan mengukur tingkat kemampuan rata-rata mahasiswa semester 1 dalam berbahasa Inggris tulis pada Mata Kuliah English 1 melalui analisis kesalahan (error analysis) terhadap hasil Ujian Akhir Semester 1 yang berupa teks ekspositori. Penelitian ini mengambil tempat di Jurusan Administrasi Niaga, menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan teknik tes menulis. Data yang telah terkumpul diukur kebenarannya dengan menggunakan standar baku pada buku Harbrace College Handbook (1977), Common Mistakes in English (1982), dan A Practical English Grammar (1982). Penelitian ini memperoleh beberapa temuan sebagai berikut: yaitu (1) mahasiswa lupa memasang kata kerja atau to be yang berfungsi sebagai predikat, untuk kesesuaian subjek dan predikat, (2) mahasiswa menggunakan kata hubung dan angka untuk mengawali sebuah kalimat. (3) mahasiswa lupa menggunakan huruf kapital untuk mengawali kalimat atau untuk nama sebuah objek dan bentuk jamak sebuah kata benda (pluralization), (4) mahasiswa belum memahami tentang bentuk kata (derivation) dan kata majemuk (noun phrase), dan (5) mahasiswa belum memahami fungsi tanda baca khususnya “titik”, “koma”, dan “titik koma” pada kalimat. Mahasiswa yang berasal dari SMK ternyata memiliki kemampuan yang lebih baik dibanding mahasiswa yang berasal dari SMU untuk membuat teks ekspositori meskipun jumlah mereka lebih sedikit dibanding mahasiswa yang berasal dari SMU. Peserta didik wanita mendapatkan hasil yang lebih baik dibanding peserta didik pria dalam membuat teks ekspositori.Kata kunci: analisis kesalahan, teks ekspositori, ujian akhir semester, keterampilan menulis.

The purpose of this study was study analyze the students’ error in writing argumentative essay. The researcher focuses on errors of verb, concord and learner language. This study took 20 students as the subject of research from the third semester. The data took from observation and documentation. Based on the result of the data analysis there are some errors still found on the student’s argumentative essay in English writing? The common errors which repeatedly appear are verb. The second is concord, and learner languages are the smallest error. From 20 samples that took, the frequency the errors of verb are 12 items (60%), concord are 8 items (40%), learner languages are 7 items (35%). As a result, verb has the biggest number of common errors.

Penelitian ini bertujuan meningkatkan kemampuan menulis bahasa Inggris siswa melalui self-editing and self-correcting berdasarkan analisis kesalahan tata bahasa dan kosakata. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan dari tes menulis siswa. Penelitian dilakukan secara kolaboratif dalam dua siklus, dan setiap siklus terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi, dan refleksi. Setelah dilakukan tindakan self-editing and self-correcting dalam dua siklus, ditemukan adanya peningkatan kemampuan menulis bahasa inggris siswa. Peningkatan ini dapat dilihat dari adanya perbedaan hasil analisis kesalahan pada pra-tindakan, tindakan siklus I dan tindakan siklus II. Hasil analisis pra-tindakan menemukan 29,16% memperoleh skor minimal 70, siklus I menemukan 60% siswa memperoleh skor minimal 70, dan siklus II 86,21% siswa memperoleh skor minimal 70. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah hasil analisis kesalahan tata bahasa dan kosakata yang digunakan sebagai landasan pembelajaran menulis melalui self-editing and self-correcting terbukti mampu meningkatkan kemampuan menulis bahasa Inggris siswa.Kata Kunci: analisis kesalahan, tata bahasa dan kosakata, self-editing and self-correcting, kemampuan menulis. Improving the students english writing skill through self-editing and self-correcting based on grammatical and vocabulary error analysis Abstract This study aims to improve students' English writing skills through self-editing and self-correcting based on grammar and vocabulary error analysis. This is calssroom action research. The data were collected through observation and test techniques from 28 students. The research was carried out collaboratively in two cycles. Each cycle consists of two actions. Each action consists of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. After the self-editing and self-correcting action in two cycles, there is an increase in students’ English writing skills. The improvement of students’ writing skills can be seen from the difference in the error analysis in pre-action, first and second cycle action. The results of pre-action analysis show that 29,16% of students get 70 as a minimum score. After the implementation of cycle I, it is found that 60% of students get 70 as a minimum score, and in the second cycle, it is found that 86,21% of students get 70 as a minimum score. The conclusion of this research is the analysis of grammatical errors and vocabulary that is used as the basis for studying writing through self-editing and self-correcting can improve the students' English writing skills.Keywords: error analysis, grammar and vocabulary, self-editing and self-correcting, writing skills.

Writing is one of the vital skills for EFL learners. However, they still face some difficulties while processing a task. The present study aimed to analyze the errors that occurred on sixty English essays made by Thai University non-English major students who enrolled in the fundamental English course. The Surface Strategy Taxonomy (Dulay, Burt, & Krashen, 1982) was adopted to explore the errors of omission, addition, misformation, and misordering together with those that were excluded in the taxonomy. According to the framework of Surface Strategy Taxonomy, the findings revealed the most common errors involving omission of articles, followed by the addition of the preposition, the omission of the preposition, the omission of the subject, and misformation of subject pronoun, respectively. Then, according to the errors which were out of the stated taxonomy, the errors in subject-verb agreement were the highest detected error, followed by tense errors, ambiguous sentences, a direct translation from L1 to L2, misformation of object pronoun, misformation of using an adjective as the main verb, the addition of verb to be, and addition of conjunction, respectively. By investigating the errors in foreign language writing, the results would trigger foreign language learners to aware of the error of English writing that might occur. And the benefit also goes to the pedagogy in developing the teaching materials together with teaching strategies.

This thesis is the study about an error analysis of using phrases in writing recount text at tenth grader in SMA Parulian 2 Medan. The objective of the study is to identify the types of common phrases’ error made by the students of tenth grader in SMA Parulian 2 Medan in writing recount text. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study is the tenth grade students of SMA Parulian 2 Medan which consists of three classes. The object of this study is class of X-A. The instrument of collecting data used writing test, writing recount text. The data were analyzed by identifying the students’ phrases errors by underlining each error from students’ answer sheet, after that classifying the types of error based on five types of phrases. Finally, the research result showed that there are 145 phrases errors made by the students X-A in writing recount text. The types of phrases which indicate common error is on noun phrase. The number of noun phrase error are 83 with percentage 57,24%, followed by verb phrase has 28 with percentage 19,31%, the third is prepositional phrase which has 22 with percentage 15,17%, the fourth is adjective phrase which has 10 with percentage 6,90%, the last is adverb phrase has 2 with percentage 1,38%.  It was caused the students constructed or arranged the words or sentences based on Indonesian meaning. English has different rules in constructing phrases. The students also were lack of knowledge about phrases. Therefore, English teachers are expected to focus on types of phrases in learning English.

This research aimed at identifying the subject-verb agreement errors in students’ writing. This research applied a descriptive research. The data were collected through test and non-test instruments. Test instruments were conducted through writing test and non-test instruments were through questionnaire and interview. The data obtained from both test and non-test instruments were conducted by employing descriptive analysis. This research analyzed students’ narrative writing based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt and Krashen (1982). This result revealed the types of error in subject-verb agreement in the students’ narrative writing covering omission, addition and misinformation. In conclusion, the students involved in the research made a number of errors. It was found that the students’ ability to use subject-verb agreement in English was still low.

The objectives of this research were to find out the students difficulties in determining types of case and to investigate the reasons why the students had difficulties in determining case. This was a qualitative descriptive research. The subject of this research was the sixth semester students of English Department in IAIN Langsa that consist of 30 students. Documentation, questionnaire and interview were the instruments in collecting the data. Based on the data, the students felt difficult in determining types of case such as accusative, locative, nominative, possessive, agentive, and ablative. It can be seen from the mistakes made by students through documentation and supported by the results obtained from questionnaire and interview. Then, there were several reasons why the students had difficulties in determining case. They were: 1) Many types of case given by a lecturer made the students difficult to remember them. 2) The students were confused with the types of case because a noun phrase can have more than one type. 3) The students felt difficult to distinguish between accusative and dative case. 4) The students did not master English grammar well.

This study aims to know the variety of errors, the most typical error and the least typical error on grammar writing for the grade students in the state of junior high school 5 Setu, and also to make teaching and learning activities more effective and efficient. This research is descriptive research method. The research instrument in this research is writing task. Writer uses the questioners to collect the data. Students answer the questions and from the answers’ students are arranged to be paragraph. The discussion of the errors are frequently occurred in the students’ English writing capitalization have the high percentage 12.93%, punctuation 12.93%, spelling form 12.50%, word form 11.21%, singular-plural 10.34%, article 9.48%, present tense 8.62%, added word 8.62%, word choice 7.33%, preposition 4.31%, and omission 1.72%. By studying the percentage of the error analysis on English writing skill, the writer found the ability of the students in writing skill was neither too low nor too high. The most typical error is on capitalization (12.93%) and the least typical error is on omission (1.72%)

This study is a classroom action research that focuses on the implementation of grammatical error analysis to improve students’ writing skill on recount text for students. The study conducted at SMA Tri Dharma Kosgoro Class X MIA that consisted of 25 students; 15 male and 10 female. Apart from implementing the grammar error analysis to enhance students’ writing skill, the researcher also identify some errors of students’ writing particularly on grammatical error and analyze some factors of these errors. The implementation of this research was in cycle I that consist of eight meetings.  Study shows that the implementation of grammatical error analysis can enhance the students’ understanding in writing recount text. This has been shown by the improvement of student’s score. Moreover,  the kinds of the students’ grammatical errors could be classified into seven categories namely errors in verb groups, errors in subject and verb agreement, errors in article, errors in pluralization, errors in conjunction, errors in preposition, and errors in pronoun. The identification of these type of grammatical error is paramount due to these could help students understand some components of grammar that students should master to improve their understanding in writing recount text.

Abstract: Punctuation is set of mark used in writing to clarify the meaning and to separate the sentences, word and part of word. The using of punctuation is considered as the important aspect in productive writing skill. Therefore, it was important students to master it. The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ errors in using punctuation in descriptive text made by second year students of SMPN 3 Wera in academic year 2017/018. The subject of this study is students’ from second year in SMPN 3 Wera. The mixed method qualitative and quantitative used in this study. The study applied purposive sampling. The researcher took 21 students as a sample at a class. In collecting the data, this study used observation and writing test as the research instrument then followed by analyzing the data using formula. This study found that were two kinds of punctuation and two types of errors (period, comma, omission and addition) which classified, there are 42 errors that occurs made by the students which consist of 11 or 26% students made errors in period, 15 or 36% errors of comma, 4 or 10% errors of addition and 12 or 28% errors of omission. The dominant errors showed by the students in form of comma which 15 or 36% errors. Based on the result of this study, the researcher concluded that the students still made many errors in using punctuation

This research was aimed to find out what factors of the occurrence of Indonesian grammar interference in EFL students’ writing and what type of Indonesian grammar interference occur in EFL students’ writing. To answer the research problem on Indonesian grammatical interference, a descriptive qualitative was done by taking the fourth semester students of English Department STKIP PGRI Tulungagung as the subject of the research. Further, the data related to the Indonesian grammar interference were taken using test and observation. The result of data analysis shows that the students still got interference from Indonesian grammar as their native language. The grammatical interference in this research is classified into two; syntactical interference and morphological interference. The syntactical interference consists of word order, preposition, extra word and missing word. The most interference in syntactical interference is on preposition. The morphological interference consists of omission of determiner, wrong determiner, subject-verb agreement, be form, tenses usage, singular and plural form. The most interference in morphological interference is omission of determiner. From the observation, it was found that the cause of interference is the different structure of Indonesian and English grammar. Moreover, the students usually wrote it first in Indonesian and later translated into English.
