Universal competencies (“soft” skills), which must be developed in a modern specialist along with the professional ones are analyzed in the article. The importance and relevance of developing such skills as communication skills, the ability to work in a team, leadership qualities and others are justified. Practical examples of developing such skills in foreign language classes are presented.

In modern school, when learning a foreign language, an approach which is used more and more often is students work in small groups. If we estimate the efforts which students put in working in a group in order to achieve a common result, then all the students’ motivation is considerably higher. Working in small groups during Russian language classes creates a very good opportunity for communication, enables the development of students’ speaking ability which is very important in learning foreign language. Working in small groups develops students’ communication skills, creates their personal qualities, helps them realize their social role in society. The teacher’s role changes, too. The teacher only directs the work, partly helps, corrects and supports the creative searching.

The present paper focuses on the problem of values and representation of language as an artistic value. The main objectives of the research are to specify the role of artistic values for people, represent the methodology for the integration of arts into foreign language classes, evaluate its results. The research questions of the study aimed to investigate how the experimental course contributed to students’ attitude towards artistic values, the development of their language and communication skills. The outlined methodology of arts integration into foreign language classes involves teaching art terms, phraseological units about art, popular-quotations, and teaching through literary translation and dialogue of cultures. The one-term experimental integrated course of English and art classes was implemented by two secondary schools in Kyiv (Ukraine). The evaluation of the results was done with the method of qualitative research. The findings confirmed that language as an artistic value is a powerful instrument for students’ personal, artistic, and cognitive development.

Introduction: The author strongly supports the notion that exposure to various genres and sub-genres in the process of learning and teaching a foreign language, particularly English for Medical Purposes in its nursing variety, can enhance the quality of communication at either every-day, professional or academic levels of students whose major is nursing. Aim: The paper aims at providing the characteristics of various genre types which are present in Oxford for Careers course books: English for Nursing 1 and 2 and which are particularly useful for teaching and learning communication skills. Material and methods: The textbook is seen as an element that is integrated into the process of education, and it is identified as a genre that functions communicatively as a source of instruction and information about how people do things in society. Results and discussion: The analyzed course books were found to constitute a valuable source of written and visual genres and sub-genres with various communicative purposes including: handling in-group and out-group communication as well as managing academic, professional and every-day communication. Conclusions: The notion of a genre-based approach to English language teaching consists in recognizing and understanding various types of genres to which students are exposed in a classroom setting.

The use of creative methods in teaching a foreign language is one of the factors that contribute to increasing the motivation of students, which is one of the most important prerequisites for success. The importance of creative teaching of English is confirmed by surveys and analysis of learning outcomes, because a great role in the comprehensive development of students is played by the teacher, in particular, the teacher of foreign languages, who, above all, must develop high moral qualities in their educators and build relationships with them on the basis of mutual understanding, mutual assistance, trust and mutual respect in the learning process. The problem of formation and development of a humane personality is dominant in higher education, and the decisive role of the teacher in the formation of human qualities of the student is confirmed by practice and experience. The humanization of the relationship between teacher and student is the basis of the educational function of teaching, the results of which the student will carry out in various activities, in different versions of interpersonal relationships. Goal. The purpose of this work is to analyze the basic principles of comprehensive development of students during language classes. The article emphasizes the need for a creative approach to classes, self-development of the teacher, their mastery of new technologies for learning, including distance learning. Methodology. The purpose and specificity of the study determined the use of the method of description with elements of comparative analysis for a comprehensive coverage of the problem. Results. The article emphasizes the importance of a foreign language teacher's choice of learning strategies, materials and techniques for achieving overall language success. Even during the pandemic and the development of distance learning, the basic requirements for the teacher remain unchanged. In order to successfully solve the problems of learning a foreign language in non-linguistic higher schools, a creative teacher with a high level of education and culture is needed. Оriginality. In particular, the article shows which qualities of teachers are most in demand by students themselves as a result of surveys. Practical value. The article provides some recommendations in order to achieve the desired atmosphere in the classroom, the ways to relieve stress of students who do not easily learn the language, methods of successful interaction in groups. They can be used by foreign language teachers in the classroom and in extracurricular activities.

The article is devoted to one of the advanced formats of foreign language teaching at high school, which effectively complements extramural and full-time forms of education – distance learning. The author emphasizes that the quality and effectiveness of foreign languages distance learning athigher educational establishments depends on effectively organized course; the pedagogical skills of teachers, participating in the educational process; the quality of applied methodical content.The main principles of foreign languages distance learning in higher education has been covered, the means of improving the quality and effectiveness of this educational format has been proposed, the key conceptual regulations of foreign languages distance learning has been determined. The article proposes a model for organizing foreign languages distance learning course for future specialists, describes a system to control and monitor the knowledge of all types of speech activities. It is also noted that independent work in the foreign languages distance course at high school should not be passive, but on the contrary, the student should be involved in active cognitive activities, not limited to acquiring foreign language skills, but necessarily includes their practical application; to solve certain communicative tasks in the future professional activity.The article concludes that in the process of organizing the foreign language distance learning course at high school, it is necessary to take into account not only the didactic characteristics and functions of multimedia and telecommunications as a technological basis, but also the conceptual trends of didactic distance learning as a component of modern education. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the specific nature of foreign language teaching in general.Key words: higher educational establishment, distance learning, multimedia means, independent work, information and communicative technologies, Internet, interactive engagement.

Abstract The article aims to emphasize the role of foreign language teaching in fostering sustainable development competence in higher education. Foreign language classes enable students to analyze actual topics about sustainable development, to discuss problems, to share personal emotions and experiences. English as a foreign language curriculum aims to build students’ basic language communicative skills with the focus on sustainability, communication for the enhancement of sustainable development competence. The present paper aims to analyze the correlation of sustainable development competence between English as a foreign language studies in the system of higher education. The article overviews the importance of the sustainable development competence development on the theoretical level as well as introduces the practices of the importance of sustainable development competence elements in foreign language classes on the empirical level. The research was planned and performed in 5 universities of Lithuania, in which the respondents studying English (average age of participants was 22 years old) expressed their opinions on the sustainable development topics and usefulness of sustainable development competence. The results of the research demonstrate that students are more engaged in topics and materials on sustainable development and it is challenging for pedagogues to constantly update their materials, to apply innovative English as a foreign language teaching strategies related to sustainable development in foreign language classroom. Therefore, the research findings with the embedded elements for sustainable development competence development encourage educators to search for innovative ways of English as a foreign language teaching in higher education.
