Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder found in women, which has increasingly become common now due to the changes in lifestyle. Explanation for the increasing number of incidents can be attributed to the change in diet in most parts of the world. PCOS is found in about 10 to 20% of women depending upon the geographical location. This disorder is characterized by irregular periods, Hirsuitism and other hyper androgenic symptoms, sub-fertility and also weight gain/obesity. Life style changes with alteration in diet and exercise are effective non-pharmacological methods in restoring reproductive function in PCOS [1]. The required dietary changes will be discussed in more details in this article.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic disease and a common endocrine system disorder among women of reproductive age. Infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne, and obesity can occur in women with PCOS. Early diagnosis and treatment along with weight loss may reduce the risk of long-term complications. Now a days PCOS is also the cause of infertility. India is PCOS capital of the world. This chapter explores how epilepsy can affect reproductive function. The National Institute of Health consensus definition of PCOS includes the presence of menstrual dysfunction, clinical evidence of hyperandrogenism, and exclusion of other endocrinopathies, such as Cushing’s syndrome and hypothyroidism. The etiology of PCOS is felt to be heterogenous, related to a complex interaction between both genetic and environmental factors. PCOS develops when the ovaries are stimulated to produce excessive testosterone. The diagnosis and pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome is explored; in particular, how valproate contributes to the condition in women with epilepsy. Valproate is the AED most associated with PCOS, as it can directly increase ovarian testosterone production. It can also cause weight gain leading to insulin resistance, another mechanism contributing to PCOS.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and thyroid disorders are two of the most common endocrine disorders in the general population. Both of these endocrine disorders share common predisposing factors, gynaecological features and have profound effect on reproductive function in women. The aim of this study is to study the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome and to evaluate the relationship between polycystic ovarian syndrome and thyroid dysfunction.Methods: This is a cross sectional observational study done on 100 patients with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome based on Rotterdam’s criteria. The exclusion criteria was hyperprolactinemia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and virilising tumour. Thyroid function was evaluated by measurement of fasting serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine levels (free T3 and free T4).Results: The mean age of the study patients was 26±4.2 years. Among the study patients, 11% of them had goitre. 18% of the patients with presented with subclinical hypothyroidism. The mean TSH levels in the study patients was 4.62±2.12 mIU/ml. The overall prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was 33% in the study patients with PCOS.Conclusions: This study concludes that the prevalence of hypothyroidism is increased in women with PCOS patients.

Adipokines are cytokines produced mainly by adipose tissue, besides many other tissues such as placenta, ovaries, peripheral-blood mononuclear cells, liver, muscle, kidney, heart, and bone marrow. Adipokines play a significant role in the metabolic syndrome and in cardiovascular diseases, have implications in regulating insulin sensitivity and inflammation, and have significant effects on growth and reproductive function. The objective of this review was to analyze the functions known today of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, and visfatin from placenta throughout childhood and adolescence. It is well known now that their serum concentrations during pregnancy and lactation have long-term effects beyond the fetus and newborn. With regard to puberty, adipokines are involved in the regulation of the relationship between nutritional status and normal physiology or disorders of puberty and altered gonadal function, as, for example, premature pubarche and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Cytokines are involved in the maturation of oocytes and in the regular progression of puberty and pregnancy.

We are presenting here a case of polycystic ovarian syndrome, an endocrine disorder, afflicting 5-13% females of reproductive age, causing 70-80% infertility associated with pituitary macroadenoma i.e. size >10mm& prolactin level >250 ng/mI. PCOS has a higher relationship with metabolic disturbance and hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis function disorder. Prolactinoma is present in about 50% women with hyperprolactinemia and 33% present with galactorrhea. Our patient was a 22 yrs nulligravida married since 3 yrs first presenting 5 yrs back with complaints of secondary amenorrhea with galactorrhea and infertility. On evaluation she was diagnosed as PCOS and pituitary macroadenoma on MRI. We medically treated her with tab. cabergoline in consultation with endocrinologist and neurosurgeons opinion. Being a compliant patient with regular follow up she conceived twice with good outcome and breastfed her babies on medical management only. Now she has 2 children (male child of 3 yrs and 1 month). Dilemma in management options will be discussed. Summary: Inspite of having both Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) & Pituitary Macroadenoma, which warrant surgical management (major causes of Infertility) selected cases like ours can be managed medically successfully.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting around 5–8% of women of reproductive age. It has a variable clinical spectrum including hyperandrogenism, menstrual abnormalities, polycystic ovaries and metabolic features like diabetes mellitus, obesity and dyslipidaemia. The manifestation of PCOS and its impact especially on reproductive function and pregnancy are profoundly affected by associated features of obesity/raised body mass index and metabolic syndrome.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS) is one of the predominant hormonal imbalances present in women of reproductive age. It needs to be diagnosed and treated at an earlier stage as it's inter-related to diabetes, high cholesterol levels, and obesity. This paper presents an application specially designed for women to help them keep track of their Body Mass Index, Blood Sugar, and Blood Pressure based on their age. The people diagnosed with PCOS(an endocrine disorder) can use this application to make their life easy since it helps follow certain exercises, diets, and timely reminders for water and medicines. It has features like the period tracker to track the user’s menstrual cycle, find dieticians nearby, links to various PCOS supplements, users can track their moods during different menstrual phases and control their mood swings. Finally, the application has games to add that interactive touch.


A common endocrine disorder named polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) usually occurs to several women’s during their reproductive age. This type of disease leads to infertility which represent with amenorrhea and hirsutism. The combination of clinical, endocrinological, and biochemical abnormalities are known to be PCOS which particularly related with the metabolism of estrogen and androgens. The periphery of ovaries is identified with the most common immature follicles which are less than 10mm. Analyzing this kind of situations in women is a major challenge which now doctors used ultrasound images which have the necessary details like number of follicles, size, and position. For real-time analysis of PCOS is a major task as follicles contains different sizes and highly connected with tissues and blood vessels which results in error prone. Several researchers have proposed different techniques for analyzing the PCOS using the ultrasound images of ovaries. In this study, we analyze the important factors and techniques used in detection of PCOS by using the ultrasound images taken from the women’s ovary and compared the results of existing works.
