Abstract An extensive literature examines subjective aging – a construct encompassing many aspects of individuals’ views of aging, such as age identity, aging anxiety, awareness of aging, and views of life stages. A factor receiving attention within this research is gender, with studies revealing much about gender differences not only in subjective aging but also its health and behavioral consequences. However, we argue that the literature is limited by its focus on gender as an individual-level characteristic – rather than a profoundly social element emerging within interactions, pervading institutions, and constituting a system of inequality that intersects with others, including age. Addressing this limitation, our chapter applies a feminist perspective to the study of subjective aging. This perspective draws into focus the implications for subjective aging of gender’s social embeddedness and provides an illustration of the interconnection between the personal and political spheres.

When an R determinant for streptomycin is transferred into a conditionally streptomycin-dependent E. coli B mutant—which requires in minimal medium either histidine or streptomycin—the latter behaves like a histidineless strain. This phenotype modification shows that the repairing action of streptomycin is prevented. The specific requirement of the strain is not now replaced even by streptomycin concentrations up to 10000 µg/ml at which the conditionally streptomycin-dependent mutant could originally grow, and which are well beyond the resistance level characteristic of the R determinant itself. These data seem to suggest that a reduction in permeability of the cell membrane cannot be held responsible for the phenomenon observed.

A population of mesenchymal cells derived from the stage-25 chick wing tip gives rise to progeny of a similar morphology and to authentic fibroblasts when grown in low densityculture. Mixed clones containing both cell types are often observed. As the more rapidly proliferating fibroblasts begin to predominate in these cultures, collagen biosynthesisrises from the basal mesenchymal level to a level characteristic of mature fibroblasts. Thefibroblast progenitor is discussed relative to the other cell types of the mesodermal lineage of the developing limb.

This study examined the idea that the rise of broadband Internet has contributed to an aggravation of the divide between those who are politically active and those who are not. It was hypothesized that both access to broadband Internet (as an individual-level characteristic) and broadband penetration (as a country-level characteristic) would strengthen the positive relation between relative preferences for political media content and political participation. Analyses were based on data that were collected in the 2010 wave of the European Social Survey ( N = 40,582; 25 countries). Political participation was measured both using a voter turnout variable and using a more general political participation scale. Findings from multilevel analyses provide support to the moderating role of both broadband access and broadband penetration, but only when using the general political participation scale.

The amplitude and phase errors deteriorate the low-sidelobe level characteristic of phased array antenna, which degrades radar performance seriously. Therefore an improved calibration method of amplitude and phase errors based on diagonal loading is proposed to address the problem of amplitude and phase errors in this paper. Initially, the mathematical models of amplitude and phase errors are developed and the impact of amplitude and phase errors is analyzed. It is found that although the interference can be suppressed when there is amplitude and phase errors in the array, the low-sidelobe level characteristic of adaptive antenna is badly deteriorated. An improved calibration method of amplitude and phase errors based on diagonal loading is proposed. Compared with traditional calibration method, proposed method can reduce the sidelobe level efficiently. At last simulations were carried out to verify the effectiveness of proposed method.

The work of Gray and Bucher ( Am. J. Physiol. 133: 542, 1941), which led them to the conclusion that the concentration of K in histamine-stimulated gastric secretion from canine vagotomized pouches is constant around 7.4 mEq/l., was repeated with only minor modification. The stimulus was administered either in a series of small subcutaneous doses repeated every 10 minutes, or in a single larger dose injected after termination of the former. Regardless of procedure, the experiments revealed a range in [K]-values of considerable magnitude, extending both above and below the level characteristic of normal canine serum; for the entire study, the lowest concentration observed was 1.6, the highest 11.2 mEq/l. Although these variations were systematic, they were not definitively correlated with acidity, [Na] or [Cl]. Hence, the inference that 7.4 mEq/l. characterizes the [K] of both the primary acid secretion and the non-acid mucous secretion is likewise invalidated. This conflict between our data and those obtained by Gray and Bucher is shown to result from two defects in their experimental design: a) they discarded all secretion collected during the first 60-minutes—an interval which gives rise to many of the [K] values well above 7.4 mEq/l.; and b) they used pooled specimens, regardless of experiment and—in most cases—of dog. The significance of these variations in [K] will be considered in a subsequent publication.
