The process of applying psychological theories to examine the biographical and autobiographical data of famous individuals is what is termed “psychobiography”. Since its inception in the early sixteenth century, this qualitative type of research method has had a fairly storied history in the Western world. This study provides a clear picture of psychobiographical research by defining terms and phrases that are used in relation to psychobiographical research. It also covered its historical antecedent and steps and procedures that are necessary for undertaking psychobiographical research. The steps presented here stemmed from a broad phase in qualitative research and analysis. In practice, however, psychobiographies do not always adhere to systematic formats, but some key decisions and guidelines must be followed in order to ensure the trustworthiness of the study's findings. Thus, the research mainly aims at introducing psychobiography, and life history research to the reader. Keywords: psychobiography, life history research, qualitative methods in psychology

ABSTRACTIn the research which was the original focus for this account, an ‘environmental life history’ study, things turned out as expected—findings replicated previous environmental life history results. Yet the investigator in this apparently ‘successful’ research, Mary Faeth Chenery, was left with questions such as “So what?” and “Have I simply reproduced the conditions which contribute to the problems I'm trying to solve?” Her colleague, Almut Beringer, has critiqued—and ‘re-viewed’—the study, setting out some reasons why the research was indeed of value. The two ‘halves’ of this article open a dialogue about the value of environmental life history research, and offer some insights into qualitative research method in environmental education. In the process, implications may be drawn for environmental education and for a range of issues within qualitative research.

This chapter addresses the intersections between public scholarship, impression management, and email as a qualitative research method. Through a discussion of Erving Goffman’s theory of impression management, the author contends that the use of email in qualitative methods must first be considered as an exercise in how we manage identities online. When public scholarship is attached to online research, qualitative researchers can take an act that is already public and form a methodological route to devise studies. The chapter outlines the use of email as a qualitative method by exploring logistics like recruitment, rapport building, ethics, consent, transcripts, and privacy expectations. The chapter ends with suggestions for future areas of research.

It seems that qualitative research has spread worldwide as a new research method beyond the Western world. Despite the fact that qualitative research in South Korea developed not only quantitatively but also qualitatively, there has not been enough effort to find out how the South Korean researcher grows into a qualitative researcher compared with the Western researcher. In this article, we try to approach the experience of becoming a qualitative researcher in South Korea with an autoethnography method. As a result, the experience and process of becoming a qualitative researcher in South Korea can be considered in three themes: learning qualitative research skills though field work, learning writing skills, and cultivating a postcolonial sensibility. This article can provide not only a new perspective on qualitative research and the process of becoming a qualitative researcher in South Korea but also a postcolonial perspective by conceptualizing that.

Document analysis has been an underused approach to qualitative research. This approach can be valuable for various reasons. When used to analyze pre-existing texts, this method allows researchers to conduct studies they might otherwise not be able to complete. Some researchers may not have the resources or time needed to do field research. Although videoconferencing technology and other types of software can be used to reduce some of the obstacles qualitative researchers sometimes encounter, these tools are associated with various problems. Participants might be unskillful in using technology or may not be able to afford it. Conducting a document analysis can also reduce some of the ethical concerns associated with other qualitative methods. Since document analysis is a valuable research method, one would expect to find a wide variety of literature on this topic. Unfortunately, the literature on documentary research is scant. This paper is designed to close the gap in the literature on conducting a qualitative document analysis by focusing on the advantages and limitations of using documents as a source of data and providing strategies for selecting documents. It also offers reasons for using reflexive thematic analysis and includes a hypothetical example of how a researcher might conduct a document analysis.

The controversy that has surrounded the value of quantitative research methods as opposed to qualitative approaches as a means to increasing the knowledge and understanding of human behaviour in health and illness, has been contested by nurse scholars for several decades. This paper continues debate around this issue and provides a critique of the problems associated with these competing paradigms. It challenges the convention that all nursing research must be objective and value free in order to be scientific, and provides an overview of the processes that should be considered by researchers utilizing qualitative methods of inquiry.
