In the last decade, lichen has become a research interest related to exploring secondary metabolites compounds. Lichen is a unique organism and contains specific chemical compounds rarely found in other natural sources; one species is the lichen Teloschistes flavicans. The objective study explores the toxicity effects and antioxidants activity properties from lichen Teloschistes flavicans isolate. The isolation of secondary metabolites was carried out by extraction, separation, and purification by means of gravity column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, and purity tests. Toxicity activity test used the Mayer method by looking at the LC50 value, while the antioxidant activity test used the DPPH method by looking at the IC50 value. The results of the isolation obtained a needle-shaped crystal with the name of the compound is 3-[1'-(2",3"-dihydroxy-phenyl)-propyl]-7-hydroxy-chroman-4-one and the molecular formula C18H18O5. The toxicity test showed that extract and isolate compounds have LC50 values of 9.38 and 162.18 µg/mL, indicating that the isolated compound was toxic. The antioxidant test showed that the extract and isolated compounds have antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 54.05 and 127.38. The results of these studies provide scientific development of natural compounds that have the potential to act as antioxidants for diseases in the human body.

The study about antioxidant activity test of coffee parasite leaves (Loranthus ferrugineus Roxb.) by 1,1-diphenyl-2-pikrilhidrazyl (DPPH) method has been done. The aim of this study was to determine the content and activity of secondary metabolites, flavonoids and antioxidant, which found in the coffee parasite leaves. Dry powder of parasite coffee leaves (Loranthus ferrugineus Roxb.) as much as 0.5 kg were macerated by 2 L of ethanol solvent at room temperature for 4 x 24 hours, then mixed and filtered. Ethanol filtrate was evaporated at 30-40°C by using a rotary evaporator to obtain the crude extract of coffee parasite leaves. The results of the phytochemical screening showed positively that the extract was containing alkaloid, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and steroid compounds.The results of the antioxidant activity test by using DPPH method was obtained that the amount of antioxidant activity of the samples of ethanol extract had a very strong antioxidant activity against radical DPPH 0.05 mM, with IC50 values was obtained 6.063 ppm. Whereas, for comparison of ascorbic acid was about 3.127 ppm.

Wualae (Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M Smith) is one of the plants in the Zingiberaceae family, widely used in medicine ranging from rhizomes, fruits, and flowers. Empirically Wualae are usually used by people for treating skin diseases, flavoring food, a natural soap, and in Southeast Sulawesi, it is used to treat typhoid fever. This study aims to examine the antioxidant activity of Wualae (Etlingera elatior) plant. The plant extracts were extracted by maceration method, antioxidant activity test was performed by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The results showed that ethanol extracts of fruits, leaves, stems and rhizomes of Wualae (Etlingera elatior) has the potential antioxidant activity with the IC50 values of 72.518 mg/L, 99.890 mg/L, 52.345 mg/L and 58.638 mg/L, respectively. and Vitamin C has IC50 value of 3,787 mg/L.

<p><em>Obat Pahit</em> is a potion that has been long commonly consumed by Lingga Malay society for generations as stamina keeper. The most dominant plants found in the packaging of the Obat Pahit were namely <em>Bauhunia semibifida, Cnestis palala</em> and Penawa Root (3 species). This research aimed to investigate and determine activity of antioxidant contents in <em>Obat Pahit</em> from five Traditional Medicine Practitioners (TMPs) in the district of Lingga. The tested samples were mashed then being soaked into 2 types of solvent: distilled water and methanol, containing HCl 1%. DPPH method was also used in this research. Quantitatively antioxidant activity test of <em>Obat Pahit</em> from the five TMPs by using methanol solvent had extremely highest activity compared to the distilled water solvent. The test, using TLC plate by spraying the extract from three dominant plants with 0.1 mM of DPPH solution, produced a pale-yellow spots at a wavelength of 366 nm. On the other hand, the test using HPLC at wavelengths of 230 nm and 280 nm showed the presence of two dominant secondary metabolites contents: flavonoid and phenolic. IC50 (ppm) of <em>Bauhinia semibifida</em> (6.6247), Penawa Root (5.0124) and <em>Cnestis palala</em> (5.9968) were much lower than IC50 of mangosteen’s rind (41.7675), vitamin C (6.6612) and Stimuno drug (8.333). This antioxidant analysis has not been reported previously. This proof contributed greatly to uncovering potentially native natural resources as an indigenous Indonesian drug which is expected to decrease dependence on imported drugs especially imunomodulator, antihypertensive, antidiabet etc. This research would be beneficial and excellent manifestation for the development of natural antioxidant-based medicines from traditional knowledge of Indonesia’s local ethnicities.</p>

Antioxidant activity tests of methanol extracts of velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens) and velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens) in coffee preparations have been previously carried out by several researchers. This present study aims to examine the phytochemical and antioxidant activities of methanol extracts of Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations. The methanol extract was tested for the phytochemical and antioxidant activities by applying DPPH (1,1-Dhiphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) method. The results of the phytochemical test showed that the methanol extracts of the Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations contained secondary metabolites of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, and tannins. The outcomes of the antioxidant activity test revealed that the methanol extracts of the Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations had antioxidant activities, as indicated by the IC50 values of 42.09 ppm and 37.23 ppm. It was also revealed that the antioxidant content of Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations was stronger than the content in the velvet beans alone.

ABSTRACTAntioxidants have a function to scavenge and neutralize oxidation effect caused by free radicals by preventing the formation of radicals. Temu blenyeh (Curcuma purpurascens Bl) is one of the curcuma species which is still under-researched. Traditionally, temu blenyeh is used to treat stomachache, cough, itch, and skin infection. Some studies show that temu blenyeh extract had antioxidants activity and anti-cancer. The extract contains flavonoid, terpenoid, steroid, triterpenoid, essential oil. The study aimed to determine antioxidant activity of ethanol extract of temu blenyeh using DPPH method. Temu blenyeh was extracted by maceration with 96% ethanol solvent. The antioxidants activity test described that the value of IC50 was 48.697 ppm. Temu blenyeh (Curcuma purpurascens Bl) salah satu spesies curcuma yang masih sedikit diteliti. Temu blenyeh secara tradisional digunakan untuk mengobati sakit perut, batuk, gatal, dan infeksi kulit. Beberapa penelitian membuktikan bahwa ekstrak rimpang temu blenyeh memiliki aktivitas antioksidan dan anti kanker. Temu blenyeh mengandung flavonoid, terpenoid, steroid, triterpenoid dan minyak esensial. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui adanya aktivitas antioksidan pada ekstrak etanol temu blenyeh menggunakan metode DPPH. Temu blenyeh diekstraksi dengan metode maserasi menggunakan pelarut etanol 96%. Dalam penelitian uji aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak etanol temu blenyeh menunjukkan hasil nilai IC50 sebesar 48,697 ppm.  Jumpai (Glinus Oppoitifolius (L.) Aug. DC) contains flavonoids compounds that can act as antioxidants by donating hydrogen so as to stabilize the lack of electrons in free radicals. This study aims to determine the antioxidant potential of stem, leaf, and flower extracts by looking at the IC50 value. The stems, leaves, and flowers were extracted by maceration using 70% l ethanol solvent. The results of the antioxidant activity test using the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazil) showed very strong antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 9.523 µg / ml stem, 32.89 µg / ml leaves, and 23.07 µg / ml flowers with vitamin comparisons. C obtained IC50 value of 1,698 µg / ml. Based on these results, it can be rejected that the stems, leaves, and flowers have antioxidant activity with a very strong category against DPPH free radicals (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazil).

Indonesia is rich with essential oils such as anise and clove leave oils. In respect to explore the potential utilization of these resources, it has been conducted the transformation of p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxy benzaldehyde) respectively derived from anise oil and clove leaves oil to a series of C-arylcalix[4]resorcinarenes and C-arylcalix[4]pyrogallolarene macrocycles. Treatment of these aldehydes with resorcinol in the presence of HCl in absolute ethanol at reflux for 8 h afforded C-4-hydroxyphenylcalix[4]resorcinarene (3a) and C-4-hydroxy-3-methoxy phenyl-calix[4]resorcinarene (3b) in good yields. When the aldehydes were treated with pyrogallol under the similar condition, the products were C-4-hydroxyphenyl calix[4]pyrogallolarene (3c) and C-4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylcalix[4]pyrogallolarene (3d) which were also obtained in excellent yields. Treatment of these calix[4]resorcinarenes and calix[4]pyrogallolarenes with cinnamoyl chloride and benzoyl chloride in pyridine afforded the corresponding cinnamate esters and benzoate esters in high yields. The resulted C-arylcalix-[4]resorcinarenes and C-arylcalix[4]pyrogallol arenes were subjected to antioxidant activity test using DPPH method and showed strong activity with IC50 values of 15–80 μg/mL. In terms of the synthesized calix cinnamates, the compounds showed UV-B absorption with SPF values of 15–30 at a concentration of 25 ppm which demonstrate their potential to be applied as a UV-B protector. Furthermore, these compounds were also tested for their photostability on the UV-B region and the results showed that the compounds were still unstable under irradiation for 30 min.

Antioxidant activity of Purnajiwa (Kopsia arborea Blume.) fruit has been investigated.The fruit was extracted by various solvents such as n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. The aim of the research is to define a class of compounds and antioxidant activity. The compounds test was conducted by the phytochemical method. The results showed that the purnajiwa fruit extract is classified as secondary metabolites of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, and steroids. The antioxidant activity was tested by DPPH method and the amount of antioxidant activity was characterized by IC50 values. The result indicated that the antioxidant activity (IC50) for n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol solvents is 3524.05 ppm, 316.09 ppm, and 154.89 ppm respectively.Keywords: Purnajiwa Fruit, Antioxidant, DPPH, Phytochemicals

Abstract Aquilaria beccariana van Tiegh is one of the agarwood (gaharu) species that grows naturally and cultivatived. However, the chemical and antioxidant potential of its leaves have not been studied much. This research aimed to examine the chemical compounds and the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of the agarwood leaves A. beccariana van Tiegh which grows naturally and cultivatived. The leaves were processed into simplicia and then extracted using 96% ethanol as solvent. Phytochemical screening agarwood leaves to determine the chemical compounds such as of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids/triterpenoids, saponins and tannis. The antioxidant activity test was carried out using the DPPH method to obtain the IC50 (Inhibitory Concentration) value. The compound tracing used GC-MS. The results showed that the simplicia and the extract of the leaves both natural-grown and cultivated contained secondary metabolites of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids/triterpenoids, and tannins positively, whereas the glycosides were only found in cultivated type. The result of the antioxidant activity test showed that the ethanol extract of the leaves of A. beccariana van Tiegh both natural-grown and cultivated was categorized as very strong. The results of the identification of chemical compounds by GC-MS were identified 18 compounds in the natural-grown leaves, while 40 compounds were identified in the cultivated ones.
