Management of fish health is one of the main considerations in aquaculture and different plant compounds are being used for supporting fish health to minimize the negative impacts of synthetic aqua drugs. In the present experiment, potentiality of moringa (Moringa oleifera; Lamarck, 1785) leaf as a nutritious dietary source for tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus; Linnaeus, 1758) fish was tested and the duration was two months from 30th September to 30th November, 2020. The moringa leaves were brought, cleaned, dried, and finally crushed into powder. Three experimental diets were formulated using the processed moringa leaf powder (MLP) at the rate of 0% (MLP0%) as control, 10% (MLP10%) and 20% (MLP20%) as treatment mixing with rice bran, wheat bran, mustard oil cake, fish meal, soya oil and vitamin-mineral premix. Fifteen tilapia fingerlings having average initial length 10.88±0.11 cm and initial weight 29.06±0.50 g was stocked in each tank with 90 L water. Sixty days feeding trial was performed with three replications of each treatment. The fishes were fed with formulated feeds twice daily at 9 am and 4 pm at a rate of 3% of their body mass. Sampling of fish and water quality parameters were carried out at twelve days interval. Moreover, the blood glucose and cholesterol of tilapia were measured monthly. Final length, final weight, weight gain, percent weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR) and production of tilapia were significantly different among the treatments. The highest FCR (3.17±0.25) and SGR (1.33±0.12 %) values were in MLP20% and MLP10%, respectively. In the experiment, the highest and the lowest tilapia production were 9.21±0.39 and 7.39±0.35 kg m-3 in MLP10% and MLP20%, respectively. The blood glucose values were significantly different among the treatments (p< 0.05) and the highest value was in MLP0% (48.00±2.00 mg dl-1). Moreover, the highest and the lowest blood cholesterol was found in MLP0% (177.67±2.52 mg dl-1) and MLP20% (148.33±1.53 mg dl-1), respectively whereas the values were highly significantly different among the treatments (p≤ 0.01). Water quality parameters were statistically similar among the treatments (p> 0.05) and the values were within acceptable range for tilapia culture. Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. 2021, 7 (2), 153-163

This experiment evaluated the efficacy of benzocaine to reduce stress response during transport of juvenile cobia. Fish (30 g) were packed in bags and transported for 8 h (stocking density = 10 g L-1). Three concentrations of benzocaine were evaluated: 0, 2, and 6 mg L-1. Blood samples were taken for glucose and hematocrit before transportation, and then at 0, 2, 24, and 48 h after. Water quality parameters were verified. No mortality was observed. Total ammonia nitrogen was higher (2.46 mg L-1) and pH was lower (6.92) at 2 mg benzocaine L-1. There was an increase in blood glucose for all treatments on arrival, and it was higher for those exposed to benzocaine at 6 mg L-1, although at 48 h they were all similar. The hematocrit did not differ among treatments. The results suggest: 1) the density 10 g L-1 is considered safe for juvenile cobia transport; 2) benzocaine did not mitigate stress response on cobia during transport, therefore its use is not recommended for this purpose.

This study investigated the prevalence rate, relative abundance and mean intensity of par­asites infecting cultured Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus L. in three fish farms, Gbarnga, Warta and CARI in Bong County, Liberia. Organs from thirty fish samples were exam­ined from September 2016 to February 2017, along with water quality parameters. Results showed the occurrence of seven parasites including protozoans, monogeneans, digeneans, cestodes, hirudineans, nematodes and crustaceans which were organ specific in terms of infection. The prevalence of the parasites varied seasonally, with the highest numbers oc­curring in November-January. The low prevalence rate, relative abundance and mean in­tensity of the parasites showed no threat to fish farmers in Liberia. All the water quality parameters were at desirable levels for the culture of the fish except nitrite, which was beyond the threshold for sustainable fish culture. It is therefore concluded that although parasitic infections in the three farms in the Bong County were low, best farm management practices are essential.

Abstract To investigate the effect of supplementation of dried biofloc produced by freeze-drying method on water quality and growth performance of red hybrid tilapia, two experimental diets (T0 treatment: 0 % biofloc; and T1 treatment: 4 % freeze-dried biofloc) were examined during 57 days of feeding trial. Diet T0 resulted in higher feed intake than T1 treatment (P < 0.05), while no significant differences were found between the two treatments in terms of weight gain, SGR, and FCR (P > 0.05). For water quality parameters, values of temperature, EC, TDS, ammonia and nitrate were significantly higher for T1 treatment (P < 0.05). While dissolved oxygen level was significantly lower for T1 treatment compared to T0 treatment (P < 0.05). Moreover, no significant differences were found for pH and salinity (P > 0.05). However, the two treatments showed water quality parameters levels within the range of standard levels of water quality for tilapia culture. In addition, proximate composition of experimental diets showed significantly higher lipid content for T0 treatment than T1 treatment (P < 0.05). While no significant differences were found between means of treatments for organic matter, protein, fiber, ash and energy contents (P > 0.05). Based on these results, a 4 % supplementation of freeze-dried biofloc can be successively included in formulated diets for red hybrid tilapia without any effects on growth in terms of weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio and survival, and can result in acceptable water quality levels for red hybrid tilapia.

This study was aimed to evaluate the efficiency of three protein level feeds on the fingerlings production of riverine endangered Notopteruschitala (Hamilton, 1882) for a period of two months in ponds. Chital fry (Initial wt, 5.6±0.19 g) were randomly stocked at the rate of 7410 per hector. Feeding trials were conducted under 3 treatments (T1: feed contains 35% protein, T2: feed contains 30% protein, T3: feed contains 25 % protein) each with 3 replications. No significant (P<0.05) difference was observed for all the water quality parameters among the treatments. A suitable range of water quality parameters (temperature, water transparency (cm)), dissolved oxygen (mg/l), pH, alkalinity (mg/l), ammonia) were recorded with the environment of experimental ponds. The treatment had significant effects on weight gain, ADG, SGR among treatments. Highest weight gain (19.31 ± 0.23 g) was observed in T1, lowest (13.96 ± 0.15 g) in T3. SGR (1.65±0.02) and ADG (0.18±0.005) were significantly (P<0.05) highest in T1 followed by T2 and T3. The N chitala exhibited highest survival rate (96.66%) in T1 than T2 followed by T3 (88.89 %). The best FCR value (3.02±0.09) was recorded in treatment T1 with 35% protein contain feed. Relatively, highest benefits (138690±175.36 BDT/ha) were found from treatment T1 compared to other treatments. Similarly, the cost benefit ratio was highest in T1 (1:1.23) and lowest in T3 (0.95). Findings indicated that treatment T1 (35% protein containing feed) was found best in terms of growth, production and economics of N. chital for fingerling production in ponds. Res. Agric., Livest. Fish growth, yield and economics of polyculture were evaluated for six months from April to September, 2011 in ponds of Kushtia district, Bangladesh under 4 treatments of feeds and weeds as T0: rice bran, wheat bran and mustard oilcake; T1: Azolla; T2: Grass and T3: Banana leaf. Each treatment had 3 replications. Mean initial stocking weight of fishes like Hypophthalmichthyes molitrix, Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Barbonymus gonionotus was 62, 64, 57, 54, 63, 65 and 25 g, respectively. Stocking density (11,115 fishes/ha), liming (250 kg/ha), basal fertilization (Cowdung, 1,500 kg/ha; urea, 60 kg/ha; and Triple Super Phosphate, TSP 60 kg/ha) and periodic fertilization (Urea, 2.5 kg/ha/day; and TSP, 2.5 kg/ha/day) were same for all the treatments. Water quality parameters (water temperature, transparency, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity and free carbon dioxide) were monitored fortnightly and fish growth parameters (weight gain and Specific Growth Rate, SGR) were monitored monthly. Treatments did not vary significantly for the mean water quality parameters. Treatment T0 varied more significantly (P<0.05) for the mean final weight,  weight gain, SGR, survival rate and yield for almost all the species except C. idella and B. gonionotus. Significantly highest CBR was recorded with treatment T1.

Study on habitat and biological characteristic of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Batur lake have been carried out in Februari until November 2011. The result investigations of water quality parameters at six research station showed that support for the life of Tilapia. Exploitation rate of Tilapia was exceed the optimum rate (over fishing). Tilapia in Batur lake was able to reach 41,45 cm on size with growth rate (K) 0,52 per year. Tilapia in Batur lake was spawn throughout the year (IKG < 20%) with the top of spawning on March and July. The size of first maturity was 17,559 – 20,408 cm. Tilapia in Batur Lake was herbivore to omnivore as the first consumer level with generalis pattern.
