Objective of the present study was to carry out the physicochemical and phytochemicals standardization of Lepidium sativum L seeds to establish the standard pharmacognostical parameters of this valuable medicinal plant. Many standardization parameters of Lepidium sativum were analyzed. Standard method was adopted for the preliminary phytochemicals screening. Analysis of pesticides residues, aflatoxin & heavy metals were also performed. The sections of seeds were prepared for quantitative microscopic parameters. The air dried powdered plant material was subjected for determination of physicochemical standardizations like ash value, Extractive value and fluorescence nature of the powder drug using light of short and long wavelength of 254nm and 366nm respectively. Phytochemical screening was performed for the identification of phytoconstituents in the plant which was helpful in the development of analytical profile. The morphological and microscopic examinations of drug were revealed the presence of endosperm cell which are polygonal in shape and contain alerone grains and oil droplet, cell of testa, yellow colouring matter and starch grains. Preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of carbohydrates, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, proteins, saponins and lipids in the drug extract and flourescence nature of drug was confirmed by fluorescence analysis in different solvent. Concentrations of heavy metals,ash value and extractive value were determined and found within acceptable Pharmacopoeial limits. Pesticides residues and aflatoxins were also determined but not detected in the tested samples. Vegetables of the plant order Brassicales are believed to have health-promoting properties, as they provide high contents of glucosinolates (GLS) and deriving from these, enzymatically and heat-induced breakdown products, such as isothiocyanates (ITC). Besides their positive physiological effects, ITC are electrophilic and can undergo reactions with food components such as proteins. Following the trend of improving traditional food products with GLS-rich ingredients, interactions of ITC with proteins can diminish the properties of both components—protein’s value and functionality as well as ITC’s bioactivity. In vegetable-enriched bread, where cresses (Lepidium sativum L. or Tropaeolum majus L.) are added to the initial dough, together with benzyl cyanide, benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) is formed during the baking process. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible migration behavior of the GLS breakdown products and the formation of ITC-wheat protein conjugates. After the baking process, the breads’ proteins were enzymatically hydrolyzed, and the ITC-amino acid conjugates analyzed using a LC-ESI-MS/MS methodology. In all samples, BITC-protein conjugates were detected as thiourea derivatives, while formation of dithiocarbamates could not be detected. The study showed that GLS and their breakdown products such as ITC migrate into the surrounding food matrix and undergo reactions with proteins, which could in turn lead to modified protein properties and reduce the bioavailability of ITC and lysine.

In traditional medicine, Annnickia chlorantha (Annonaceae)is used in many parts of Africa to treat several pathologies. It is used for the management of stomach problems, for the treatment of jaundice, tuberculosis, urinary tract infections, malaria, hepatitis and ulcers forms, for gallstones or even diarrhea. The phytochemical analysis and determination of the antiradical activity of the methanolic extract of the trunk bark from Annickia chlorantha from Gabon was the subject of this study. Phytochemical screening revealed the abundance of alkaloids, polyphenols and catechics tannins.The total polyphenol content released by the Folin-Ciocalteu method was 309.17 ± 38.05 g of gallic acid equivalent per 100 mg of dry matterand the total flavonoids content performed with AlCl3 was 155.16 ± 21.06 g of quercetin equivalent per 100 mg of dry matter. The antiradical activity was limited to 81.58% ± 1.25 without disappearance of the ABTS•+ radical after 6 minutes of incubation. These results confirm the correlation between the polyphenol content and the antiradical activity.

The possibility of determining the total content of heavy metals in the liquid phase of snow was researched by X-ray fluorescence analysis with preconcentra tion of elements determined by sorption DETATA filters. Optimal conditions for the analysis, providing a minimum error of determination have been chosen and justified. The contribution was made by the stage of concentration in the overall error of the method. A pollution monitoring of snow cover in the five districts of Samara was carried out.

Chloroxylon swietenia DC. (Family: Rutaceae) is an important traditional medicinal plant used in the treatment of various ailments like fungal infection of skin, rheumatism, common cold, cough, ophthalmic infection and cataract, wounds and as an astringent. However, detailed scientific information is not available to identify the plant material, in order to ascertain its quality and purity. In this paper, we report the pharmacognostic evaluation of the bark for the purpose of its identification and differentiation from related species. The macroscopy, microscopy, physicochemical parameters such as moisture content, ash values, extractive values, fluorescence analysis and preliminary phytochemical analysis of the bark were investigated. Transverse section of the bark shows presence of cork, cortex, medullary rays, and stone cells. Presence of cork, stone cells, phloem fibres and parenchyma cells which were also observed in the powdered sample of the bark. The result of preliminary phytochemical screening indicated presence of alkaloids, steroids, carbohydrates, proteins, phenolic compounds, tannins flavonoids and triterpenoids. The present study will be useful for its identification prior to carrying out further research work. The findings of this study will facilitate pharmacognostic standardization of the plant material and aid in the preparation of a herbal monograph for the species.
