Little knowledge exists about the degree of source, sink and source: sink limitations on mean seed weight in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). The objective of this work was to analyze the nature and magnitude on seed weight response to assimilate availability during the effective seed-filling period in oilseed rape. Three Argentinean varieties, Eclipse, Impulse, and Master, were grown under field conditions, and at the beginning of the effective seed filling period, a broad range of source: sink manipulation combinations were produced. Source manipulations consisted of two incoming radiation (R) level reductions: 0% (Rn) and ~50% (Rs) combined with three different sources: sink treatments were applied: C, control; PR, ~50% pod removal, and D, 100% defoliation. Rs significantly reduced yield (15%) and MSW (12%) with respect to Rn, without significant effects on the rest of the sub yield components. Source:sink manipulation treatments significantly affected all yield components. PR diminished yield by 29%, reducing ca. 40% seeds pl-1 by reductions pods pl-1 (41%) with respect to Rn, whereas PR increased MSW by 19%, counterbalancing the reduction in seeds pl-1 and thereby in yield. When considering different seed positions along the main raceme, Rs reduced MSW by 12% independently of seed positions onto the raceme. On the contrary, PR increased MSW in average 17% with respect to C. Results reported here suggest that oilseed rape has source: sink co-limitation during the effective seed filling period, which is apparently higher than wheat and lower than maize. The effects of time of leaf removal on Brassica napus L. were studied under field conditions at Saskatoon in 1976 and at Swift Current in 1977. Leaf removal at the start of flowering reduced the number of pods per plant, increased seed weight, and reduced seed yield. Leaf removal at the end of flowering did not affect yield or its components.

The response of three spring cultivars of oilseed rape to five levels of nitrogen fertilizer (0 to 200 kg/ha) was studied during 1978–9 (Scarisbrick, Daniels & Alcock, 1981). Sampling problems, practical difficulties of measuring yield components, and the high co-efficients of variation for these data were discussed. During the course of further investigations on the winter cultivar Jet Neuf (established on approximately 75000 ha in the U. K. during 1980–1) within-plot variability for plant weight was assessed in order to indicate the size of sample necessary to compare treatment means.

An analysis of the yield components of rape (Brassica napus L.) was carried out under field conditions for 2 yr at Saskatoon. Plant morphology and the crop environment were altered by the use of four planting densities and three water regimes. The number of branches per plant was scarcely affected by irrigation, but was reduced by high seeding rates. Number of pods per plant was increased by irrigation and reduced by high seeding rates. The number of seeds per pod was increased by irrigation, but reduced by high seeding rates. The 1,000-seed weight was increased both by irrigation and increased seeding rate, as was seed yield. Yield was positively correlated with 1,000-seed weight in both years. Yield component compensation was evident in the relationship of 1,000-seed weight to pod number and number of seeds per pod.

ABSTRACT The present research was carried out to determine the best selection criteria for yield improvement in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). Nine genotypes of Brassica napus were sown at Oilseeds Research Institute, Faisalabad, during the years 2011- 2012, to evaluate the means and components of variability (genotypic and phenotypic), heritability (h2 B.S), correlation (genotypic and phenotypic) and path analysis for yield and various yield components. At phenotypic and genotypic level, seed yield/plant had significant positive correlation with plant height, seeds/plant and siliqua/plant. A positive and highly significant genetic relationship was found between plant height and seeds/plant, siliqua length and seeds/siliqua, days to maturity and 1000 seed weight, days to flowering and seeds/plant, days to maturity and seeds/plant. Path coefficient revealed that the seeds/siliqua, 1000 seed weight, days to flowering, days to maturity and seeds/plant had direct positive contribution towards seed yield per plant. For rapeseed breeding seed per plant was the variable with maximum potential of selection for seed yield improvement because this trait possessed high h2 B.S, highly significant positive correlation and maximum positive direct effects with yield
