Genetic variability, heritability and selection response were studied among rice genotypes for yield attributing traits. Nine rice genotypes were evaluated in randomized complete block design with two replications at the University of Agriculture Peshawar-Pakistan during 2018. Significant differences were observed among the rice genotypes for all the traits. Pakhal took maximum value for Culm length (113.6 cm), Panicle length (29.05 cm), Secondary branches panicle-1 (31.4), Grain length (10 mm), Spikelets panicle-1 (162.8) and Grains panicle-1 (122.7 g). However genotype NIAB-IR-8 took maximum value for 100 grain weight (2.9 g) and Grain yield plant-1 (30.28 g). High heritability and genetic advance were observed for all the studied traits viz. Culm length (0.95 and 27.77), Panicle length (0.84 and 3.83), Grain length (0.62 and 0.78), Secondary branches panicle-1 (0.66 and 6.19), Spikelets panicle-1 (0.59 and 21.82), Grains panicle-1 (0.75 and 15.82), 100 grain weight (0.76 and 0.31) and Grain yield plant-1 (0.95 and 13.34). On the basis of superiority for yield attributing traits Pakhal and NIAB-IR-8 could be recommended for future use in rice breeding programs. J. Biodivers. Conserv. Bioresour. Forty five aromatic rice genotypes were evaluated to assess the genetic variability and diversity on the basis of nine characters. Significant variations were observed among the genotypes for all the characters (grain breadth (mm), grain length (mm), grain L/B ratio, gelatinization temperature (score), gel consistency (mm), amylose content (%), protein content (%), 1000 grain weight (g) and grain yield per plant (g)) studied. High GCV, PCV, heritability and GA as observed in amylose content, grain length average and L/B ratio suggested that these three characters could be transmitted to the progeny. Multivariate analysis revealed that 45 genotypes were grouped into six clusters. There were marked variations in intra-cluster distances, which ranged from 0.482 to 7.851. The highest intra cluster mean for five traits (amylose content, width average, L/B ratio, length average, 1000 grain weight) was obtained from cluster I constituted 10 genotypes. Thousand grain weight and amylose content have been found to contribute maximum towards genetic diversity in 45 genotypes of aromatic rice.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjpbg.v24i2.17002

Field experiments were undertaken during kharif 2012 and 2013 under irrigated ecosystem to evaluate the efficacy of botanicals along with standard fungicides for assessing per cent disease incidence, plant height, number of tiller per plant, number of spikelet per panicle, panicle length, 100-grain weight and grain yield against blast of rice. Pooled data of two years suggest that neem based commercial biopesticides with azadiractin as active ingredients were found effective in reducing disease severity and improving the yield attribute of the crop and proves promising products when compared to standard fungicides. Among the botanicals the spraying of Achook, Neem Azal T/S, Neem gold and Tricure shows significant reduction in disease severity, along with improving yield attributes, increasing the 100-grain weight and grain yield.

The performance of agronomic traits, genetic variability, and correlation studies for yield and its components in some red rice (Oryza sativa) promising lines. Biodiversitas 22: 3994-4001. Improving a new variety commonly depends on the nature and magnitude of genetic variability and its utilization, followed by selection and evaluation before being released into new superior types. The present study aims to estimate the genetic variability and relation between yield and its related traits of the red rice promising lines. The experiment was arranged based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among rice lines for 12 quantitative traits. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) value was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), indicating a negligible environmental influence in the phenotypic expression of traits. High heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance were recorded for grain total per panicle and grain yield per hill. Grain yield observed a highly significant positive correlation with panicle length (0.63), percentage of filled grains (0.53), grain weight per panicle (0.54), and thousand-grain weight (0.52). It correlated negatively with days to 50% flowering (-0.61) and days to maturity (-0.48). The study indicated that panicle length, percentage of filled grains, grain weight per panicle, and thousand-grain weight are important yield-related traits and could be used for selection to improve the genetic potential of rice yield.

Yield potential of 16 rice genotypes including 12 hybrids, 3 inbreds, and I new plant type (NPT), were studied at the International Rice Research Institute farm under optimum crop management to achieve maximum attainable yields during the wet season (WS) of 2004 and dry season (DS) of 2005. Yield and yield components were determined at maturity. 1R76712H produced the highest grain yield (7.7 t/ha) followed by 1R75217H and Magat (7.6 t/ha) in WS; in DS, 1R79118H produced the highest grain yield (9.17 t/ha) followed by 1R73855H (8.9 t/ha) and SL-8H (8.8 t/ha. The high yield of hybrid rice was due to high harvest index (0.50). Hybrid produced significantly higher productivity (80.2 kg/ha/day) than inbred in DS, but the difference was not significant in WS. Hybrid produced higher spikelets/panicle and 1000-grain weight than inbred rice. Spikelet filling percent was higher in inbred than hybrid rice. The NPT rice genotype had the lowest spikelet filling percent, but the highest 1000-grain weight across the season. Keywords: Yield; yield attributes; hybrid and inbred rice genotypes. Combining ability, heterosis and inbreeding depression were estimated in grain amaranths for ten characters. Non-additive genetic variance was predominant for majority of characters in both F1 and F2 generations. The parent AG-21 was good general combiner for yield/plant also showed high GCA effects for panicles/plant and harvest index in both F1 and F2 generations. Seven characters, the best F2s on the basis of SCA involves one parent with high GCA effect and the other with poor or average GCA effects. The hybrids which exhibited highest heterosis also showed high inbreeding depression. Heterosis over better parent was highest for economic grain yield (145.047%), followed by panicles/plant (113.675%), panicle length (33.656%) and grain weight/panicle (23.566%).

The results revealed that parents namely, TSK-10, TSK-27, New Blue-II, Kurara and TSK-109 were found highly genetic diverse for days to 50% tasseling, days to 50% silking, days to 755 dry husk. The parents namely, TSK-109, Kurara, New Blue-II and TSK-10 were found highly genetic diverse for plant height (cm), cob height, number of cobs per plant and number of grains per cob. The parents namely, Kurara, TSK-109, TSK-10, New Blue-II and TSK-27 were found highly genetic diverse for shelling percentage, grain yield per plant, grain yield per cob and 100-grain weight.

This study performed to determine the association between grain yield and yield components in fifty-four selected rice genotypes at F2 populations. Results showed that traits, the panicles per plant (r = 0.751) and filled grains per panicle (r = 0.458) correlated significantly with grain yield, while grain yield was negatively associated with non-filled grains per panicle (-0.297). Path coefficient analysis revealed that grain yield was associated with panicles per plant and filled grains per panicle with the direct effects of 0.691 and 0.568, respectively. The greatest indirect effect belonged to panicle length (0.301) through filled grains per panicle. Stepwise regression analysis showed that 72.1 percent of yield variation could be explained by three characters: the panicles per plant, filled grains per panicle and panicle length. Information obtained in this study revealed that traits, the panicles per plant and filled grains per panicle, could be used as selection criteria for grain yield improvement at segregating populations of rice.

A field experiment was conducted at Kalikapur village of Kaliganj upazila under Satkhira district in order to observe the effects of flooding duration and additional application of K and S on transplanted boro rice cv. Binadhan-8 during January - May 2013. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design where the main plots comprised of five flooding levels viz. continuous flooding (W1), flooding for 10 days (W2), flooding for 20 days (W3), flooding for 30 days (W4), flooding for 40 days (W5), and the sub-plots of four additional (over the recommended dose) nutrients rates viz. S43 + K25 (T1), K38 (T2), S32 + K38 (T3), and K50 (T4), with three replications. The duration of flooding showed significant positive effect on the yield and yield components of boro rice cv. Binadhan-8. The highest values for plant height (106.8 cm), panicle length (28.4 cm), number of plants hill-1 (15.3), grain yield (4.8 t ha-1) and straw yield (6.5 t ha-1) were recorded in continuous flooding (W1) while these values were decreased with the decrease in the duration of flooding from 40 days to 10 days. Additional application of K and S also significantly influenced all of the parameters. Results revealed that the highest values for plant height (102.8 cm), panicle length (26.6 cm), plants hill-1 (15.4), 1000-grain weight (23.9 g), grain yield (4.8 t ha-1) and straw yield (6.1t ha-1) were obtained from T3 where S and K were applied @ 32 and 38 Kg ha-1 in addition to the recommended fertilizer rate. The interaction of flooding and nutrients significantly manipulated the yield and yield attributes. Due to interaction of flooding and nutrients, the highest growth and yield was observed in continuous flooding with S32 + K38 (W1T3). The results indicated that the flooding with fresh water and use of additional nutrients (K and S) had a remarkable effect in growing boro rice cv. Binadhan-8 in saline soils of Bangladesh.Res. Analysis of genetic diversity and variability is an initial step for crop development in a plant breeding program. Thirty foxtail millet genotypes were evaluated for their ten agro-morphological traits viz. grain yield, days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of nodes per tiller, panicle length, thousand-grain weight, and leaf blast during April to August season of 2018 at Kabre, Dolakha, Nepal. Clustering was done based on variability observed among the genotypes for all the ten traits by the average linkage method. The genotypes were grouped into six clusters. The shortest inter cluster distance between Cluster I and Cluster II was 17.63 and the longest was between Cluster IV and Cluster VI with 47.55. Cluster I had the maximum leaf blast score with the minimum leaf length. The Cluster II had the maximum grain yield and days to 50% heading and the number of nodes per tiller. The Cluster III was characterized by the maximum leaf length and leaf blast value. The genotypes grouped into the Cluster IV were characterized by the lowest value of days to 50% heading and 80% days to maturity and those of Cluster V had the maximum thousand-grain weight. The genotypes categorized into Cluster VI had the maximum plant height, leaf length, and panicle length. Cluster II and Cluster V were good because of their agro-morphological traits. The presence of a high level of diversity among the genotypes indicated their suitability for selection in crop breeding programs. Correlation analysis of genotypes having the maximum panicle length leaf area and higher plant height and shorter maturity period are pre-requisite for improvement in grain yield.

<p>Rice is an essential staple food in Nepal but researches and varietal improvement programs are rarely carried out due to inadequate variability study. The field study was carried to diagnose the influence of genetic and environmental factors on yield traits to aid future rice breeding programs. Twelve genotypes were arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications from July to November 2019 at the research field of the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Tribhuvan University, in the hilly area of Nepal. Analysis of variance showed significant difference for days to 50% booting, days to 50% flowering, plant height, panicle length, flag leaf area, filled grains per panicle, unfilled grains per panicle, fertility percentage, effective tillers m<sup>-2</sup>, straw yield, grain yield, 1000-grain weight, and harvesting index indicating the presence of variation in genotypes. LPN BR-1615 was the most promising genotype in grain yield. The values of Phenotypic Coefficient of Variation (PCV) were higher than Genotypic Coefficient of Variation (GCV) for each trait and low difference between them was found for days to 50% booting, days to 50% flowering, plant height, panicle length, grain yield, thousand-grain weight, fertility percentage, and harvesting index. Plant height, effective tillers m<sup>-2</sup>, and grain yield showed high heritability (i.e. 93.2%, 60.5% and 92.6%, respectively) and higher genetic advance as percentage of mean (i.e. 46.5, 34.6 and 50.1, respectively) . Thus, the experiment revealed that selections favoring plant height, effective tillers m<sup>-2</sup>, and grain yield would help in effective breeding programs of rice in future.</p>
