Background: The accurate assessment of size and number of ovarian follicles are paramount to understanding the physiology of female reproduction. Objective: To observe the variation in size of the Graafian follicle and follicular number with age in Bangladeshi women. Methods: This descriptive type of study was done in the Department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from January to December 2009, on 140 post mortem human ovaries collected from 70 unclaimed female dead bodies from the morgue of Forensic Medicine, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. The samples were divided into three age-groups including group A (10-13 years), group B (14-45 years) and group C (46-52 years). 10 best prepared histological slides from 14-45 years age group were examined to determine the average size of Graafian follicle and 20 slides from each group were taken to determine the number of follicles. Results: The average diameter of the Graafian follicles of the right is slightly higher than that of the left ovary but not statistically significant (p>0.05). No difference was found in follicular number in between the right and the left ovaries at any age group. However, the difference in number of the follicles of the ovary were statistically significant in between age groups A & C and B & C (p<0.001). Conclusion: The average diameter of Graafian follicle was found greater in the right ovary than the left ovary. However, the number of ovarian follicles was found to decrease in old age. Objectives: To understand the histopathology of various diseases of vermiform appendix, the knowledge of normal histology of the organ at different age group is mandatory. Study Design: Comparative study. Setting: Islamic International Medical College Rawalpindi. Period: January 2014 to March 2015. Material and Methods: Total forty negative appendectomy/normal appendices specimens removed along with other abdominal operations were included in this study. Four equal groups (10 specimens in each) were made, spacing 15 years between each group. The last group had no upper age limit due to less availability of the specimens. The middle parts of specimens were included in this study the various parameters i.e. wall thickness, lymphoid nodules and lumen sizes were measured under microscope after calibration in micrometers after staining. Results: The lumen size decreases with advancing age. There was inverse relationship between lumen size and wall thickness. Surprisingly sum of mean lumen size and mean wall thickness of all age groups had no much difference. The number and size of lymphoid nodules decreases with advancing age. Conclusion: Although lumen size decreased as age advances but did not obliterate completely till 74 years age. The number and size of lymphoid nodule decreased but wall thickness size remained same and they are observed even at the age of 74 years.

Background: The liver is the organ most subjected to the development of abscesses and made up 48 % of all visceral abscesses' and 7% of all intra abdominal abscesses. Liver abscess should be suspected when there is a combination of fever, leucocytosis, constitutional symptoms, and pain in the right upper quadrant, and tenderness over the liver or right lower rib cage. The liver is affected by a number of local and disseminated infections; their frequency and types vary considerably around the world. Parasitic disorders are more prevalent in developing countries. Methods: It was a cross-sectional descriptive study. The cases were taken from the admitted patients of Medicine unit of SMCH, Chittagong. The study was conducted over a period of one year with a sample size of 50 patients and sample was taken by purposive sampling. Results: Among 50 patients 40 (80%) were diagnosed as ALA and 10 (20%) were diagnosed as PLA. ALA cases are common in 21-30 years age group & PLA cases are more common in >50 years of age group. Majority of the cases were from rural area. Common clinical features were fever, abdominal pain, nausea and tender hepatomegaly. Diarrhea was present on admission in 7 (15.9%) patients of ALA. Anaemia was common in both but polymorphonuclear leucocytosis was moderate to severe in PLA. Microscopic examination of stool samples for E. Histolytica trophozoites was positive in 3 (7.5%) cases and cysts in 4(10%) cases. Nine patients had right sided pleural effusion. Conclusions: Clinical features are common in both ALA and PLA. Liver abscesses are more common in men and more prevalent in rural areas. ALA more commonly occurs in 21-30 years age group but can occur at any age. Pyogenic abscess is more common in older age group (>50 years) and E. Coli is the commonest organism. Background: Most frequently performed gynaecological surgery is hysterectomy. The prevalence of hysterectomy varies within different regions. There are mainly two types of hysterectomies according to which part of uterus is removed. The main types of hysterectomy are total and subtotal or partial hysterectomy. The hysterectomy can be performed by three routes abdominal, laproscopic and vaginal hysterectomy. The main objective of our study is to know most common pathology and different age groups of the patients underwent hysterectomy. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study was carried during period 6 months, at GCS medical college, hospital and research centre, Ahmedabad. Total 100 hysterectomy specimens were analyzed for histopathological lesions. We had taken the clinical and histopathological findings of these cases from the records of department of pathology, GCS medical college , hospital and research centre. Results: In our study of 100 cases, most common age group underwent hysterectomy was 40-49 years and least common age group was 20-29 years. Type of hysterectomy performed most commonly in this study was total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingoophorectomy. Most of lesions were seen in the myometrium 42 cases (42%), Endometrium 32 cases (32%), Cervix 16 cases (16%) and Ovary 10 cases (10%). Hysterectomy remains the widely used treatment modality.

Background: The incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) increase with age and, therefore, it is recommended that adults undergo regular CRC screening, ideally by colonoscopy, with some new guidelines recommending screening begin at 45 years. Effective bowel preparation is a critical step to a successful colonoscopy. Of concern is that older adults may have poorer quality of bowel preparation or reduced tolerability for the bowel preparation. Here, we performed a post hoc secondary analysis for the effect of age on the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of ready-to-drink sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and citric acid (SPMC oral solution) bowel preparation. Methods: A phase III, randomized, assessor-blinded, multicenter, non-inferiority study was conducted comparing split-dose, low-volume SPMC oral solution with split-dose, low-volume sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and citric acid powder for oral solution. A post hoc secondary analysis was performed to assess efficacy, safety, and tolerability of SPMC oral solution by age group (<50 years, 50–64 years, ⩾65 years). The prespecified primary efficacy endpoint (‘responders’) was the proportion of participants with ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ ratings on a modified Aronchick Scale (AS). Secondary efficacy outcomes were the quality of cleansing of the right colon as assessed by the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS); as well as selected findings from the Mayo Clinic Bowel Prep Tolerability Questionnaire. Safety assessments included adverse events (AEs) and laboratory evaluations. Results: Within age groups, at least 83.9% of participants were responders by the AS, and at least 91.1% of participants were responders by the BBPS in the right colon. On both scales, responder rates were highest in the youngest age group and decreased with increasing age. Greater than 88% of participants in any age group found the preparation ‘easy’ or ‘acceptable’ to ingest, with rates of ‘easy’ being highest in the oldest age group. No new safety signals were seen in any age group. The most commonly reported drug-related, treatment-emergent AEs were, by ascending age group, nausea (7.0%, 3.2%, 0.8%), headache (4.2%, 2.8%, 1.6%) and vomiting (2.8%, 1.2%, 0.8%). Conclusion: Ready-to-drink SPMC oral solution showed good efficacy of overall colon cleansing and tolerability in adults across different age groups, including those ⩾65 years.
