Dhaka was established as a provincial capital of the Mughal ruler on the north-eastern bank of the Buriganga River during 1608-10. This river has enormous significance to the residents of Dhaka. Not only it surrounds the city, but also it provides important services to the residents including water supply, navigation, recreation, sanitation, fish production, tourism, biodiversity and flood control. A study was carried out to observe the ecological health hazards and their risk to human health of the Buriganga River. The samples were analyzed to determine water quality. The study showed that the water is high in biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), Electrical conductivity (EC), Total dissolved solid (TDS), Salinity, Alkalinity, Turbidity and low in dissolved oxygen (DO) which revealed huge environmental health risks and possible ecological disruption of this river.J. The efforts of modern civilization to create an environment to meet human aspirations have successfully resulted in constant improvements of our lifestyle, but it has increased risks to human and ecological health. This situation has motivated many scientists throughout the world to analyze the environmental factors that can affect our health or ecology and to calculate the levels of risk. In Bangladesh development activities and utilization of the river pose a great threat to the health of the existing natural environmental system, particularly for the important river Buriganga of the capital city, Dhaka, due to the pollution of the river water. A study was carried out to observe the ecological health hazards of the Buriganga river and their risk to human health. Several random samples of water were collected from different spots on the river from September to December 2006. The samples were analyzed to determine water quality and associated environmental health risks. The study revealed that the water is high in biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphate (PO4 -3), ammonia, organic matters and nutrients, etc. It also revealed huge environmental health risks and possible ecological disruption of this river. Finally, the research recommends a sustainable policy framework on how the pollution could significantly be reduced by using different appropriate measures. High community activity on the border of the Bah Biak River causes pollution in the waters of the river. The increase in the number of settlements and industries in Pematangsiantar city certainly has an impact on the quality of its waters. The purpose of this study is to find out the water quality of the Bah Biak River in Pematangsiantar City covering the physical and chemical parameters of the waters. This research was conducted in 2021 in Bah Biak River Pematangsiantar city. Water sampling in the Bah Biak River is carried out with three repetitions, namely in March, June and August taking into account the representation of the seasons. Water sampling is carried out in situ for parameters of brightness, pH, total dissolved solid (TDS), electrical delivery, temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia, while for laboratory scale measurements are carried out for biologycal oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) parameters. The results of the measurement will be displayed in graphic form and descriptively discussed by referring to the specified quality standards. Based on the results of measurements of several water quality parameters in the Bah Biak River, it can be concluded that the majority of the parameters studied still meet the quality standards but there are parameters that have passed the quality standard threshold, namely BOD and ammonia parameters.   ABSTRAK Tingginya aktivitas masyarakat di sempadan Sungai Bah Biak menyebabkan pencemaran di perairan sungai tersebut. Peningkatan jumlah pemukiman dan industri di Kota Pematangsiantar tentu berdampak kepada kualitas perairannya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kualitas air sungai Bah Biak di Kota Pematangsiantar meliputi parameter fisik dan kimia perairan. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada tahun 2021 di Sungai Bah Biak Kota Pematangsiantar. Pengambilan sampel air di Sungai Bah Biak dilakukan dengan tiga kali pengulangan yaitu pada bulan Maret, Juni dan Agustus dengan mempertimbangkan keterwakilan musim. Pengambilan sampel air dilakukan secara insitu untuk parameter kecerahan, pH, total dissolved solid (TDS), daya hantar listrik, suhu dan dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia, sedangkan untuk pengukuran skala laboratorium dilakukan untuk parameter biologycal oxygen demand (BOD) dan chemical oxygen demand(COD). Hasil pengukuran akan ditampilkan dalam bentuk grafik dan dibahas seacara deskriptif dengan merujuk pada baku mutu yang ditetapkan. Berdasarkan hasil pengukuran beberapa parameter kualitas air di Sungai Bah Biak maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa mayoritas parameter yang diteliti masih memenuhi baku mutu namun terdapat parameter yang telah melewati ambang baku mutu yaitu parameter BOD dan ammonia. The study was conducted to investigate the surface water quality of the Tista River at Kaunia point in wet (September to November) and dry season (December to February) during the period from September 2013 to February 2014. The water samples were collected from five different sampling stations of Tista River mentioned as Station 1 (St-1), 2 (St-2), 3 (St-3), 4 (St-4) and 5 (St-5). The analysis of the study showed that the average transparency was 13.28 and 32.31 cm in wet and dry season, respectively, while the temperature was observed 25.86 and 18.18?C in wet and dry season, respectively. The observed electrical conductivity (EC) was 84 and 145.67 ?s cm-1, pH was 7.72 and 8.03, dissolve oxygen (DO) was 5.35 and 5.37 mg l-1, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) 1.64 and 1.89 mg l-1 in wet and dry season, respectively. In wet season, the total dissolved solid (TDS) was measured 53.2 mg l-1, while 73.86 mg l-1 in dry season. The alkalinity was found 40.94 and 43.4 mg l-1 in wet and dry season, whereas, the hardness was found 98.47 and 102.46 mg l-1 in the following seasons. The study showed that most of the water quality parameters of the Tista River were suitable for aquatic organisms as well as fishes. However, the agricultural runoff and waste materials generated from anthropogenic sources could be the main causes of degradation of water quality and aquatic organisms.J. Environ. The study was conducted to observe the status of fisheries resource of Tanguar haor, one of the large wetland in the north eastern part of Bangladesh. For this purpose the whole study was completed in two parts: interviewing with local people and analyzing the water quality. Indiscriminate harvesting of mother fishes, use of agrochemicals, sedimentation on haor basin and habitat destruction were found as major causes of fisheries resources degradation in the study area. Most of the water quality parameters were found good which were within the standard level set by Government of Bangladesh for fisheries. In the background of the ambitious ‘National Mission for Clean Ganga’ to clean, conserve and protect the River Ganga in a comprehensive manner, this study was undertaken to evaluate the status of Water Quality of Chandrabhaga river at Rishikesh, district Dehradun, India, between the Dhalwala bridge area and Mayakund area where it merges with the river Ganga, affecting adversely its water quality. The characteristics of Chandrabhaga river water were assessed during July to September 2017 by monitoring the water quality at most garbeged and contaminated five locations by determining physicochemical and biological parameters and metal ions. The observed values of dissolved oxygen (DO) varied from 0.4 to 1.29 mg/L, such a low DO, high biological oxygen demand (BOD, 21 ± 2.64 to 56 ±6.08 mg/L) and much high Coliform (1760 ±13.23 to3180 ±27.61 MPN/ 100 ml) at all the locations reflects the poor water quality of Chandrabhaga River. Recorded values of total dissolved solid (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), total hardness (TH), alkalinity, phosphate, sodium, potassium and calcium exceeded the WHO standards. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed the highly positive correlations all the time between EC and TDS, TH and TDS, TH and EC, while during high flow period good correlations were recorded between alkalinity and pH, TDS, EC and TH. Irrigation water quality parameters such as soluble sodium percentage (SSP), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), magnesium adsorption ratio (MAR) and Kelly’s Ratio was evaluated to test the suitability of river water for irrigation purpose.

This study deals with the investigation of water quality of the Buriganga river, Dhaka. For this purpose, samples were collected from five locations of the Buriganga river of Bangladesh during wet (monsoon) and dry (winter) season in 2011 to determine the spatial distribution and temporal variation of various water quality parameters. Water samples were collected from three different depths of river. The color was light brown in wet season and slightly black to black color in dry season. The water was found slightly acidic to slightly alkaline (6.6-7.5). Water temperature ranged from 18.2°C (dry) to 27.04°C (wet). The river was found to be highly turbid both in dry and wet season. Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Electric Conductivity (EC) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) were found higher in the dry season compared to that of wet season, while Dissolved Oxygen (DO) was found higher in wet season. This investigation was carried out to determine the haematological response of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings reared in a Fish cum-duck integrated system. One thousand and eighty pieces fingerlings with mean initial weight (MIW) and standard length (SL) (1.8 ± 0.22g, and 5.19 ± 0.44 cm) respectively were stocked for ten (10) weeks. The haematological investigation revealed that RBC and WBC increased significantly (P<0.05) within treatments. Other haematological variations were also observed in parameters such as PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC and Hb with significant decrease (P< 0.05) in their mean values within treatments as compared to the control. Water quality parameters such as Dissolved oxygen ad Transparency shows evidential significant different (P< 0.05), while parameters such as Temperature, Total dissolved solid (TDS), Nitrate, Phosphate, Biological oxygen demand (BOD), Turbidity and pH shows no significant difference (P> 0.05). This studies shows in conclusion, that there were variations in the haematological and water quality parameters, but it was noticed that the values recorded could not to a greater extent hurt the fish because is still within the tolerable limits as confirmed by other research evidences. More so, the level of gains outweighs the level of damages caused as compared to the economic approach.

Abstract Land use influences and trends in water quality parameters were determined for the Chao Phraya River, Thailand. Dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) showed significant trends (R2 ≥ 0.5) across the year, while total phosphorus (TP) and faecal coliform bacteria (FCB) showed significant trends only in the wet season. DO increased, but BOD, NO3-N, and TP decreased, from the lower section (river kilometres (rkm) 7–58 from the river mouth) through the middle section (rkm 58–143) to the upper section (rkm 143–379) of the river. Lead and mercury showed weak/no trends (R2 &lt; 0.5). Based on the river section, major land use groups were a combination of urban and built-up areas (43%) and aquaculture (21%) in the lower river basin, paddy fields (56%) and urban and built-up areas (21%) in the middle river basin, and paddy fields (44%) and other agricultural areas (34%) in the upper river basin. Most water quality and land use attributes had significantly positive or negative correlations (at P ≤ 0.05) among each other. The river was in crisis because of high FCB concentrations. Serious measures are suggested to manage FCB and relevant human activities in the river basin.

In the present study an attempt has been made to evaluate water quality and related density of Cladocerans for a period of one year, October 2015 to September 2016. Water quality parameters such as temperature, PH, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, total alkalinity, total hardness, chlorides, phosphates, and nitrates are presented here to relate with the abundance of Cladocerans. The Cladoceran abundance reflects the eutrophic nature of the Chakki talab.

Novelties of this study include a synthesis of water quality parameters for the upstream sub-basin of the Dnieper River. This upstream sub-basin includes the Desna River. The synthesis revels new insights on the sources of the water pollution and the status of the water quality for different purposes such as drinking, aquaculture and recreation. The main research objective was to identify the main sources of water pollution and how those sources could decrease the water quality. As a result of our analysis, we conclude the following. The levels of ammonium-nitrogen and nitrite-nitrogen in the Desna River (upstream sub-basin) are by 2-43 times and up to 53 times higher than the water quality thresholds, respectively. This poses a risk for recreational activities since too much nutrients often lead to blooms of harmful algae. We also find an increased level of biological oxygen demand in the river for drinking purposes. For aquaculture, decreased levels of dissolved oxygen are found. Climate change has an impact on water quality. For example, extreme floods caused by too much precipitation can bring pollutants to nearby waters. Monthly average temperature has increased by +2.7 degrees contributing to increased microbiological processes that could stimulate blooms of harmful algae. Main sources of water pollution are sewage discharges in cities, agricultural runoff and erosion activities after floods.
