A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the birth weight status of the newborn babies born at Dhaka Medical College Hospital as well as to find out the prevalence of low birth weight among them. All the new born babies (202) born at the labour room of Dhaka Medical College Hospital during the specified period were included in the study. Maximum newborn babies (78.71%) had birth weight 2.5Kg or more and 21.29% had low birth weight (<2.5 Kg). It was found that mean weight of newborn babies was 2.73 Kg and standard deviation was ± 0.52 Kg. Among them 93.56% were full term babies. In a developing country like ours, occurrence of low birth weight is still very alarming, although it is preventable. Emphasis on health education to inform all the women during antenatal visit about the consequences of low birth weight and significance of delivering the babies with normal birth weight is recommended.   doi: 10.3329/taj.v17i2.3454   TAJ 2004; 17(2): 95-98

Background: World health organization estimates that 25 million low birth weight (LBW) babies are born annually worldwide and 95% occur in developing countries. Low birth weight is a major public health problem of Bangladesh. So an attempt was made to study the incidence of low birth weight (<2.5kg) and also the associated risk factors of low birth weight among the new born babies born to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.Aims: To determine the Prevalence of low weight among the babies born and to determine the relationship of low birth weight with maternal factor like maternal weight, height, gestational period, antenatal checkup, heavy physical work during pregnancy, hypertension, age of the mother and parity, in Obs. & Gynae Department, DMCH.Method: This descriptive cross sectional study was done in Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Five hundred (500) samples were selected for the study. The study was done from 1st January 2006 to 31 December 2006. Data processing and questionnaire are processed manually using scientific calculator and by computer using SPSS programmers version-16. All abortions, still born, gross congenital abnormalities were excluded from this study. The cut off point used for low birth weight is 2.5 kg.Results: A total of 500 women were interviewed. The incidence of low birth were found 21.6%. Younger than 20 yrs (31.25%) and more than 40 years (35.71%) mother delivered more low birth weight babies. The primigravida and multigravida (>4 parity) showed more low birth weight babies. Women from low socioeconomic condition produced significantly larger number of low birth weight babies as well as short stature. Low maternal height, less educated, illiterate, manual worker mother delivered more low birth weight babies. Preterm birth comprises larger number of low birth weight (LBW 35%). Low height of new born babies also associated with low birth weight. Female babies were higher than the male babies. Preterm babies were lighter (LBW) than the full term babies. Conclusion: The study finds out the incidence of low birth babies, the figure close to the developing countries. The study revealed that maternal age, gestational age, parity, socioeconomic status, maternal weight and disease condition have strong relations with birth weight of babies. Occupation and antenatal check up also affects birth weight of babies.J Shaheed Suhrawardy Med Coll, June 2018, Vol.10(1); 16-22

ObjectivesThe present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of low birth weight (LBW), and to investigate the association between maternal body weight measured in terms of body mass index (BMI) and birth weight in selected countries in Africa.SettingUrban and rural household in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal and Uganda.ParticipantsMothers (n=11 418) aged between 15 and 49 years with a history of childbirth in the last 5 years.ResultsThe prevalence of LBW in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal and Uganda was, respectively, 13.4%, 10.2%, 12.1%, 15.7% and 10%. Compared with women who are of normal weight, underweight mothers had a higher likelihood of giving birth to LBW babies in all countries except Ghana. However, the association between maternal BMI and birth weight was found to be statistically significant for Senegal only (OR=1.961 (95% CI 1.259 to 3.055)).ConclusionUnderweight mothers in Senegal share a greater risk of having LBW babies compared with their normal-weight counterparts. Programmes targeting to address infant mortality should focus on promoting nutritional status among women of childbearing age. Longitudinal studies are required to better elucidate the causal nature of the relationship between maternal underweight and LBW.

Background: Perinatal health is influenced by maternal weight gain. Increase in obesity in population and excess weight during pregnancy may be different complications including large for gestational age fetus. As a result cesarean delivery has increased in prevalence. Maternal weight gain during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters is an important determinant of fetal growth Objective: To determine the relationship between maternal weight gain and birth weight of baby at term. Methodology : A cross sectional study was carried among 50 pregnant women at term in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital and Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Hospital during the period of January 2013 to July 2013. Data were collected in pre-designed data collection sheet. Results: This study found maximum (36%) were age group 21-25 years followed by 28% were ≤20 years, 24% were between 26-30 years, 8% were between 31-35 years and only 4% were of 36-40 years. The average age was 25 years. Among these 50 pregnant women, 2 cases (4%) had BMI < 18.5, 15 cases (30%) had a BMI 18.5-24.9, 19 cases (38%) had a BMI 25-29.9 and 14 cases (28%) had a BMI ≥30. The mean birth weight was 2.77±0.33. kg. Mean weight gain was 10.72±3.72 Kg. Conclusion: This study showed that reasonable maternal weight gain significantly increased birth weight of the baby at term. Bangladesh J Obstet Gynaecol, 2017; Vol. 32(2) : 79-83

This cross sectional study was carried out on hundred patients of vesicovaginal fistula who were admitted and underwent surgical treatment in Dhaka Medical college Hospital (DMCH), Dhaka, during the period of January, 2001 to June, 2003. The aim of this study was to obtain the outcome of the different methods of repair of different types of vesicovaginal fistula. An in-depth interview was taken from patients by using an open ended questionnaire. Necessary information about the procedure applied, together with results of operation were recorded in the data sheet. The result of this study showed that the anatomical success in closure of fistula occurred in 94% cases. In 38% of cases the size of the fistula were small in size, in 49% cases location were at the Junction of bladder neck, 78% of cases experienced no postoperative complications. Route of operation were vaginal in 84% cases. Previous attempt of repair were in 62% cases whereas in 38% women had history of operation. Obstetric vesicovaginal fistula is a curable condition. The success rate has been increased over time. More complicated cases which have been failed in previous attempts of repair are being referred. Most of the unsuccessful repair were bad cases (2%). So more training and experience of surgeons for repair of fistulas, employing modified technique wherever applicable can improve the result. In developing countries, where about 75% of births occur at home or in the community, logistic problems prevent the weighing of every newborn child. Baby born with a weight less than 2,500 g is considered low birth weight, since below this value birth-specific infant mortality begins to rise rapidly. In Bangladesh, the prevalence of low birth weight is unacceptably high. Infant's sex differences, birth to conception interval, gestational age, and Apgar score are associated with infant birth weight. To screen low-birth-weight babies, simple anthropometric parameters can be used in rural areas where 80–90% of deliveries take place. A sample of 343 newborn singletons, 186 male and 157 female babies, were studied in Southwest region of Bangladesh to examine the birth weight status of newborns and to identify the relationship between birth weight and other anthropometric parameters of newborns. The mean birth weight was 2754.81±465.57 g, and 28.6% were low-birth-weight (<2,500 g) babies. All key anthropometric parameters of the newborns significantly correlated with infant birth weight (P=0.05). Mid upper arm circumference and chest circumference were identified as the optimal surrogate indicators of LBW babies. In the community where weighing of newborns is difficult, these measurements can be used to identify the LBW babies.

Background: Asymptomatic bacteriuria is defined as greater than 100,000 organisms in the urine of a person who lacks symptoms. The objective of present study was to find out the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) in women attending the antenatal OPD in a tertiary care centre and to study the effect of screening and treatment on maternal and fetal outcome. Methods: The study was conducted at OG Department, Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital over a period of ten months from March 2014 to Dec. 2014. Antenatal women at 12-16 weeks were screened by collecting clean catch midstream urine samples and doing routine urine analysis, culture/sensitivity and colony count. Treatment was given to all bacteriaurics with oral cephalexin and for persistent cases with Inj. gentamycin. Repeat culture was done at second and third trimesters. Results: In this study, the incidence of ASB was found to be 10.8%. It was more common among primi gravida (13.98%) and the incidence was found to be high in low socio economic groups (12.4%). In present study E. coli was 88.88%, Klebsiella 7.4% and Staphylococcus aureus 3.7%. Anemia was found in 37.04% of bacteriurics, preeclampsia in 7.4%, preterm delivery in 14.82% and low birth weight in 18.5% of bacteriurics. Conclusions: Treatment of ASB during pregnancy at the first antenatal visit decreases the incidence of preeclampsia, premature delivery, low-birth weight and perinatal mortality.
