Background: Postpartum depression is a type of mental disorder associated with childbirth during pregnancy or within the first postpartum year. It is reported as a common psychological health problem affecting 10-15% of women worldwide. The duration of postpartum depression frequently depends on its severity and the time of initiation of treatment. This study assessed depression and its associated factors among postpartum period women of Godavari municipality, Lalitpur, Nepal. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted using Edinburg Postpartum Depression Scale among 195 mothers who were within six months of the postpartum period. The chi-square and logistic regression were applied to establish the association between postpartum depression and associated factors. Results: Out of the total 195 postpartum women, 37(19%) women suffered from depression and out of those women 2.1% had suicidal thoughts. Among the associated factors, education, occupation, the intent of pregnancy, family support and pregnancy-related problems/complications were found to be significantly associated with Postpartum depression (p<0.05). Conclusions: Nearly one-fifth postpartum women suffered from some type of depression. It is one of the public health concerns which directly or indirectly corresponds to the socio-economic condition of the women. The improved education and economic status of women, intention of pregnancy, family care and support during pregnancy and the postpartum period and early diagnosis and management of health problems could reduce the magnitude of the postpartum depression. Keywords: Associated factors of postpartum depression; edinburg postpartum depression scale; Nepal; postpartum depression.

Background: The postpartum period was a physical and psychological adaptation process. Psychological disturbances could present in form of postpartum blues, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis. Objective: The objective of this research was to determine the incidence of postpartum depression, identify predictors of postpartum depression and identify the dominant predictors of postpartum depression. Methods: this research used a cross sectional design. Sample were pregnant women which were chosen by random sampling technique. Data was collected with questionnaire to measure the predictors of postpartum depression was carried out with the Revision Postpartum Depression Predictors Inventory (PDPI) questionnaire and to measure depression scores used with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Data analysis was done by univariate and bivariate analysis with with chi-square statistical tests and multivariate with logistic regression tests. Results: The results showed that the significant predictors were economic status, self-esteem, marital satisfaction, postpartum blues, and prenatal depression. The dominant predictor factor is satisfaction in marriage with a t value of 2.778 times. Conclusion: The results of the study show that marital satisfaction is a dominant predictor of postpartum depression, indicating that marital satisfaction or relationship quality is one of the important support systems because of the need for partner involvement in care actions during the pregnancy period until with the puerperium as efforts to prevent postpartum depression.     Keywords: postpartum depression, postpartum period, postpartum bues

Introduction: Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) is a tool used to assess the risk of postpartum depression (PPD). In this study we determined the reliability and validity of the Malay version of EPDS when administered at two different time points in the postpartum period. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study design was carried out between May and September 2017 at three government primary healthcare clinics located in Batang Padang district, a suburban area of Perak state in Peninsular Malaysia. We recruited a total of 89 women; 41 women were in the early postpartum period (1-30 days) and 48 women were in the late postpartum period (31-120 days). Cronbach's alpha coefficient, inter-item correlation, and corrected item-total correlation were used to assess the internal consistency. The concurrent validity was assessed using Spearman’s correlation. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and R 3.4.2. Results: The Cronbach’s alpha for the first and second group was 0.78 and 0.62, respectively, which indicated satisfactory reliability. At both time periods, removing Item 2 from the scale resulted in a significant increase in Cronbach’s alpha (to 0.847 and 0.709, respectively). As expected, the EPDS scores correlated moderately with the BDI-II scores (1−30 days: Spearman's rho = 0.65, p < 0.01; 31−120 days: Spearman's rho = 0.73, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The Malay version of the EPDS is a reliable screening instrument for detecting postpartum depression. It showed reasonability and feasibility and can be used in postpartum clinical settings or for assessing intervention effects in research studies. Furthermore, as our results indicated, removing Item 2 from the Malay version would increase the internal consistency of the EPDS.

Abstract Background: Postpartum family planning is an important intervention for reducing high risk fertility behavior and spacing birth intervals; which ultimately helpful for the health of mothers and their babies. Hence, this study aimed to determine the magnitude of timely initiation of postpartum contraceptive and associated factors among extended postpartum women in Pawe district, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: Community based cross-sectional study design was employed from February to March 2019 in Pawe district. A stratified multistage sampling technique was used to select a total of 820 women in the extended postpartum period. Data were collected using a pretested interviewer administered questionnaire. A bivariable and multivariable logistic regression model was fitted to identify determinants of timely initiation of postpartum contraceptive among extended postpartum women. Adjusted Odds ratio (AOR) with 95% CI was computed to assess the strength and presence of an association. Variable with less than 0.05 p-value considered as a significant determinant of contraceptive initiation. Results: Out of the total participants about 37.2% [95% CI (34.0, 40.5)] initiated postpartum contraceptive. Time return of menses [AOR=18.32, 95% CI(11.66,28.80)], postnatal care [AOR=7.8, 95%bCI(3.98,15.44)], knowledge level regarding modern contraceptive methods [AOR=3.0, 95% CI(1.40,6.59)], time of resumption of sexual intercourse [AOR=2.1, 95% CI(1.327,3.21), husband approval to use contraceptive [AOR=2.45,95%CI(1.42,4.22), antenatal care [AOR=2.1,95% CI(1.13,3.76), place of delivery at institution [AOR=2.0, 95% CI(1.22,3.39)], and got family planning counseling at delivery [AOR=2.34, 95% CI(1.22,4.49)] were factors associated with timely initiation of postpartum contraceptive. Conclusion and recommendation: The magnitude of timely initiation of postpartum contraceptive was low. This suggests strengthening the integration of postpartum contraceptive use with other basic maternal health services and improving knowledge of women in practicing timely initiation of postpartum contraceptive before engagement to risk activities of unintended pregnancy is important.

IntroductionWomen during the postpartum period experience many physiological, psychological, and social changes. Quality of life (QOL) is a sense of well-being and arises from satisfaction or dissatisfaction with various aspects of life including health, employment, socioeconomic state, psychological-emotional state, and family.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to identify influence of childbirth experience and postpartum depression on QOL.MethodsThis is a descriptive cross-sectional study regarding 150 postpartum women receiving cares in the hospital of Sfax and examined during the first and the sixth week post-delivery. Data collection tools in this study were demographic questionnaire, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and world health organization quality of life-bref (WHOQOL-bref). Data were analyzed using SPSS.ResultsThe mean age of our sample (n = 150) was 29.61 years. During the sixth week study period, 126 of 150 were examined.A personal psychiatric history of depression was found in 9.3% of cases. The current pregnancy was undesired in 15.3% of cases. The prevalence of postpartum depression in the first week was 14.7% and 19.8% in the sixth week after delivery. The mean score of quality of life was 81.62 ± 9.09.Scores of quality of life and all its dimensions were significantly lower in depressive women.ConclusionBecause enormous changes develop in postpartum women, we suggest supportive measures for mother by her mother-in-law family, and caregivers to improve the QOL and health status of the mother and her child and to prevent postpartum depression.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Brackground: Prevalence of postpartum depression after giving birth 3 months and within 12 months are about 15% and 15-25%, respectively. This disorder leads to severe consequences to both mother and the child. Aims: 1) To examine prevalence of depression among women aged 18 and oder after giving birth within 12 months by Vietnamese Edinburgh Postanatal Depression Scale (EPDS). 2) To analyse several factors related to postpartum depression. Methods: This was a descriptive cross – sectional study. Total of 226 women aged 18 and older after giving birth within 12 months living in Thuan Hoa và Thuy Bieu districts, Hue city were assessed by EPDS - Vietnamese version to investigate the rate of postpartum depression. A Semi – structure questionaire was used to examine related factors to postpartum depression. Multivariables logistic regression method was used to analyse factors affects to postpartum depression in participants. Results: The postpartum depression prevalence in women aged 18 and older after giving birth within 12 months by EPDS – Vietnamese version was 15.9%. Multivariables logistic regression analysis indicated several factors associated with postnatal depression in particippants including unstable job, poor economic status, being sick in pregnancy, uexpected pregnancy, unsatisfied with gender of the baby, poor relationship with her husband, helplessness from others in caring the babies and selfcare, suffering from severe insomnia, thinking sexual relationship not so important after childbirth, decreasing sexsual desire, children often crying at night. Conclusions: prevalence of postpartum depression was quite hight therefore women after childbirth need to be supported both emotional and physical dimention to prevent developing postpartum depression. Key words: Postpartum depression, Edinburgh Postanatal Depression Scale, (EPDS)

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To assess the influence of I mmigration on the psychological health of women after childbirth. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, immigrant and Portuguese-native women delivering in the four public hospitals of the metropolitan area of Porto, Portugal, were contacted by telephone between February and December 2012 during the first postpartum month to schedule a home visit and fill in a questionnaire. Most immigrant (76.1%) and Portuguese mothers (80.0%) agreed to participate and with the visits, thus a total of 89 immigrants and 188 Portuguese women were included in the study. The questionnaire included the application of four validated scales: Mental Health Inventory-5, Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and Scale of Satisfaction with Social Support. Statistical analysis included t-test and Chi-square or Fisher’s test, and logistic regression models. RESULTS Immigrants had an increased risk of postpartum depression (OR = 6.444, 95%CI 1.858–22.344), and of low satisfaction with social support (OR = 6.118, 95%CI 1.991–18.798). We did not perceive any associations between migrant state, perceived stress, and impoverished mental health. CONCLUSIONS Immigrant mothers have increased vulnerabilities in the postpartum period, resulting in an increased risk of postpartum depression and lesser satisfaction with the received social support.

Background: This modern era talks about women strength and empowerment where they are working either equally or one step ahead of men. However, a fall back in making decisions for contraception use and family planning can still be observed. It is most frequently seen among women belonging to some village as they are exposed to a minimal health care. Keeping this in mind, this crucial period was considered as opportunity to test the issue regarding the various choices of contraception available. Objective of this study was to find out the criteria and methods of contraception selected by women in the postpartum period. Methods: A cross-sectional study in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology was conducted over a period of 11/2 years in which a total of 150 postpartum women were interrogated and counselled regarding various methods of contraception. Results: The contraceptive methods most commonly selected in postpartum period are PPIUCD, Barrier, tubal ligation and injectable contraception of which condom is the most common method adopted. The important factors responsible for the choice of contraception include parity, breast- feeding, education and socio-economic status of the women. Conclusions: Postpartum period is particularly important for initiating contraception as the largest proportion with unmet need of contraception is found among those in their first year after child birth. In order to space birth in a healthy manner postpartum contraception should be emphasized upon.

Objective Maternal amnesia is a transitional cognitive impairment occurring during pregnancy and the postpartum period. We evaluated the prevalence and extent of this suggested cognitive decline and the role of postpartum depression. Study Design A cross-sectional study was performed in women during the immediate postpartum period. Eligible women completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Cognitive function was assessed using an objective neurocognitive test (Symbol Digit Modalities Test, SDMT90, and SDMT4) and a subjective self-estimation questionnaire (Attention Function Index [AFI]). Results A total of 120 women completed the study questionnaires; 33.3% (40 women) exhibited signs of postpartum depression (EPDS ≥10). The subjective AFI test results correlated with the objective SDMT90 test results (r 2 = 0.2, p = 0.039). Depressed mothers scored significantly lower in the subjective AFI test (67.69 ± 12.01 in the study vs. 79.05 ± 14.3 in the comparison group; p < 0.001) and nearly significantly lower in the objective SDMT test (p = 0.057). In the multi-variable model, maternal depression was independently associated with the subjective AFI score (β  = −13.7; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −19.1 to −8.2, p < 0.001) but not with the objective SDMT score (β = −3.48; 95% CI −8.3 to 1.3, p = 0.15), while controlling for maternal age, gestational age, and ethnicity. Conclusion Postpartum depression is common and appears to predominantly affect maternal self-assessment of cognitive ability, rather than a true cognitive impairment.
